| It's close as far as anime movies go, but I did like a bunch of Kara no Kyoukai movies more than this, as well as the 3rd Kizu film, Perfect Blue, the Toshokan Sensou film, the first Gintama film (not the finale), Look Back, etc, a bit more. |
| No offense, but for me, it’s far from it. It was definitely a very fun experience in theatres and definitely far better in terms of both technical and fundamental qualities than the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle film by all regards except for popularity (which is obviously gonna help the latter bag all the big awards in Japan since apparently they still hate CSM over there), but I’ve never been especially fond of CSM’s writing in general compared to the top 10-20 of all the anime films I’ve watched minus those considered as “alternatives” to the original TV show(s). |

Made in abyss dawn of deep soul 4. Perfect Blue 5. A Silent Voice 6. Chainsaw man reze 7. the first slam dunk 8. Love is war: the first kiss that never ends 9. End of evangelion 10. Look back Listing it out like that, I guess it kinda is up there huh... Cause I mean one rank is interchangable, I might have put it above a silent voice if you asked me on a different day. |

| Pretty hard to put it in my top 5. All 3 Fate HF movies and the two major Demon Slayer movies are still my favorites. There are still other stand alone films and Kara no Kyoukai movie 5 was brilliant as well. |

| I understand that OP is merely asking for rankings without reasoning. To me, in terms of using literary devices like symbolism, framing and allusions and providing a solid foundation for media interpretation within concise sequences and slightly less-than-brisk pacing, it hit the mark. So yes, it is in my top 5. Perhaps with time more will come to appreciate the nuance Reze arc plays with on not only the narrative, but the animated audiovisual level as well. Take into consideration that a lot of the above rankings are going to be dependent on personal attachment to the series these films belong to, and not necessarily from judging a film as a standalone work. That said, I was surprised that Reze arc was especially good at keeping its story self-contained and surprisingly understandable to first-time watchers despite being a continuation. It serves as a springboard for several major characters to evolve from the mindset they start with in the TV series after making critical decisions with impactful consequences. Even if Denji's decision at the end seems to not have an immediate impact given the outcome and the fact that the next arc will gloss over it immediately, it gives him both precedent and experience to start maturing and exercising his own agency in the long run, against the wishes of the powers that be. It also broaches themes that will reach their crux by the end of Part 1's adaptation, should MAPPA continue the stellar work with the same care it did for this movie. So, I'm not worried about its longevity on the animation scene, for the simple matter that it does what it sets out do very well, and with surprising eloquence that I didn't expect going in. The subject matters at the center of Chainsaw can be controversial, even if I find them meaningful and ripe for discussion, so I can understand why it's not to everyone's taste. |
