Hi
Icetype Feb 3, 12:57 AM
Reading your list is so funny cause many of the notes will sound very positive but the score will be really low. These are some of my favorites:

"very interesting movie with great character dynamics and great symbolisms and themes. The ending was great. Seeing the characters interact in the quite the harsh plot left me very satisfied. " (4/10)

"A nice series/movie with a very interesting tone and feel to it (like all key products). the development of the story was very nice and the final episode/scene was very emotional. " (3/10)

"The show continued the first season nicley and was on the same level of quality. It was quite enjoyable seeing the main cast move up in the world. overall a pleasant experience." (3/10) lol

i finished fata morgana base game btw, i thought it was quite good but not peak fiction or anything like that, is it still worth reading requiem for innocence and the side content? i've seen people say they're better than the base game, and i see you have the fragment as your favorite moment

hmm, i haven't read the manga, only the novel, so not sure everything was portrayed the same (i know the plot is identical but i checked out a bit of the manga and it looked kinda bland in its presentation so i never read it) but i'm not sure i understand where you're coming from. the core premise of the novel is that kusunoki is highly self-destructive, and that trait persists throughout the whole story because it's so deeply rooted in him. the author makes it pretty clear in the afterword that kusunoki being a "fool" is what he wanted to write about: "What is characteristic of this fool, first of all, is that he is strongly convinced he can never be happy. Made more severe, this conviction can be expanded to become “I shouldn’t be happy,” and ultimately arrive at “I don’t want to be happy,” a most destructive misunderstanding." the point was never that kusunoki wanted to sacrifice the month of happiness so that miyagi could be seen. as you said, he just wanted to free her from the contract and just have her leave him behind and live a long life. of course, because he's a fool, he didn't listen to her telling him she didn't want that and did it anyway. so, like in the gift of the magi story, they both end up screwing each other over. but ironically, kusunoki's acts of self-ruination (both times he sold his lifespan) each give him the opportunity to become happier and happier, but with less and less time to be happy. by the time he's reached an epiphany, he only has 3 days left - but as he said, those 3 days to him were much more enjoyable than 3 months or 30 years. after they both sacrifice everything for each other, their impending fate, rather than being a source of worry, causes everything to just sort of fade away for them, and they realize how "cruelly beautiful" everything is, lending itself to a rather melancholic peace in the end. you can read it as an idealization of suicide if you want, i considered that reading but never thought it was the point. the idea for me was rather that life is simply not all equal, so to speak: a shorter but more enjoyable life is preferable to 30 years of a shitty life. your point about him sacrificing the month makes sense, but i think the idea is that, like in the gift of the magi, which is the title of that chapter, although they might have accidentally sabotaged each other's gifts, it only mad them happier in the end. at that point they had already lost the month anyways, so it's fitting that this is the point where kusunoki is finally able to stop destroying his own happiness and enjoy his last moments with miyagi. you say that miyagi tramples on kusunoki's wishes, but the thing is neither of them were going to be happy with the original plan anyways. miyagi didn't want to live the whole rest of her life without kusunoki, nor did kusunoki really, truly, want to live his last few days without miyagi. i don't think your point about it being a pointless hypothetical is really accurate - while we can't see our future that doesn't make the takeaway from the novel any less meaningful to apply to our own lives. kusunoki serves as a very clear illustration of self-destructive tendencies, and although he fixed himself up in the end, he was only able to do it by basically killing himself. you're not supposed to idolize him, while there was a melancholic beauty to his conclusion the point of his character is kinda that he didn't shape up in time. i think that alone makes him very relatable and impactful for a lot of people.
regarding the 10th character, they're not exactly "well-written," i more have them there to represent the manga they're from. they're the protagonist from a bunch of one-shot manga by this one author, the character wanders around these highly detailed surreal dreamscapes, the stories are all quite fun and interesting. sadly many are untranslated, i'm waiting for more. "ashizuri suizokukan" and "kani ni sasowarete" are the two i've read.

kinda surprised you didn't like 3 days of happiness, what did you dislike about it so much you gave it a 1?
