Kimetsu no Yaiba

Ever since the death of his father, the burden of supporting the family has fallen upon Tanjirou Kamado's shoulders. Though living impoverished on a remote mountain, the Kamado family are able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and happy life. One day, Tanjirou decides to go down to the local village to make a little money selling charcoal. On his way back, night falls, forcing Tanjirou to take shelter in the house of a strange man, who warns him of the existence of flesh-eating demons that lurk in the woods at night.

When he finally arrives back home the next day, he is met with a horrifying sight—his whole family has been slaughtered. Worse still, the sole survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon. Consumed by rage and hatred, Tanjirou swears to avenge his family and stay by his only remaining sibling. Alongside the mysterious group calling themselves the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjirou will do whatever it takes to slay the demons and protect the remnants of his beloved sister's humanity.

An anime that I avoided for a very long time. I knew it existed, I even knew most of the things from there and I really didn't understand why it had such a hype. The main problem for me was that it was absolutely everywhere = spoilers, and that my friend was constantly talking about it in connection with her ex (I hated her ex and I felt sorry that it was connected to her, because it's from my sister's fav anime and she kept trying to convince me to watch it. Unsuccessfully...). Anyway, this year my sister started talking about the Demon Slayer movie, ... that she wanted to go see it with me, to which I told her why not, it's an anime (I love them), but that I wouldn't know anything about it, so she simply summarized it for me. Last week, however, I thought I could at least watch the first episode, no matter what, and in the end, I watched the entire anime by the end of the week, and today I watched the latest movie, which left a hole in me and I don't want to wait so long for the next movies, watafak, I don't understand how you guys could stand it, you have my admiration. I honestly don't even know where to start, because from the first episode of the first season I was hooked and I watched it over and over again and couldn't stop. The characters, the effects, the sounds, the songs, I'm not surprised that it had such hype and I'm really annoyed that I didn't watch it sooner. This anime deserves a lot more recognition than it has so far and the latest movie is amazing. Seriously amazing and the tiring wait was really worth it

Mixed Feelings

Frankly I think I'm being generous to score this as highly as 7/10, but as much as I hate a lot of things about this show there are also some positive aspects that I can't ignore.

PROS
- Gorgeous animation and excellent fight design & combat flow, everyone says this but it's the main reason the show is fun to watch. The visuals always deliver. I tend to stay away from similar shonen series because I feel that fights often get way too long and are visually boring, but this show's fights usually hold my interest.
- The two protagonists and their relationship to each other feel genuinely ... compelling. Tanjiro gets some hate for being basic, which he is. I find him endearing despite this because I love a deeply earnest and gentle spirited character who respects everyone as a matter of common decency. He is also highly motivated (to protect and heal his sister) which makes it easy to connect with his feelings, so he gets a pass from me, I think he's plenty compelling enough to work despite the well trodden and unoriginal character type. Nezuko likewise manages to communicate a lot of depth in her personality and feelings despite being mostly nonverbal and unemotive. Their bond is rightfully placed at the center of the story.
- Strong premise that had a lot of potential directions, similar to most good shonen anime but again with slightly more pathos because the protagonists' backstory initially propels the story with such strength and makes the action feel important because it's rooted in those early emotions. That sense dwindles over time as the story starts permitting more focus to other characters.

As I mention the other characters, I'm forced to recall that this show does also fucking suck.

CONS
- God these characters are unbearable. I'm sure they are fine for people who haven't seen much anime (or much television in general if I'm being honest) but at this point the bald, underdeveloped archetypes we're being presented with feel genuinely insulting. Are we seriously expected to laugh at Sir Creepy Lech Screams-A-Lot, be entertained by the bantering of a bunch of over-designed swordsmen with one personality trait each, or find any genuine intrigue in such a dull set of dialogue trees? It genuinely makes me sad how bad some of this character writing is given that the story has shown its capability to do compelling characterization moments on occasion.
- Story is overall repetitive and disappointing. I did not mind the demon storylines the first couple of times. But by maybe the third demon this formula was already starting to grow tiresome because there is no variability in the kind of emotional moment we receive when the demon dies. It just punches the same button, "Cry for this person," over and over. I think the story is at its strongest when it is creating poignant moments with the characters (it's certainly not at its best when it's trying to be funny), but the repetitiveness of the emotional beats we get makes those moments feel progressively shallower.
- Honestly, stories that have some very promising elements but that end up being disappointing are way more aggravating than shows that are just bad or narratively unambitious. Part of me wants to rate this a couple scores lower because the gravity of the missed potential pisses me off so bad. This SHOULD HAVE been the instant classic a lot of people apparently think it is. But it's not. It is a huge letdown.

Unfortunately, I still like it enough that I can't rate it lower than a 7. But I'm not happy about it.

Flashy fights, amazing visuals, and great production quality from Ufotable. It also has the formula of a generic and mediocre shonen story. Kimetsu no Yaiba is probably the most overrated and cliché’ Shonen anime I’ve ever watched. On the outside, it’s a visual spectacle; underneath, it’s a mid story that recycles a lot of the common tropes you would see in other anime. It’s also served with cringe comic relief and a heaping side of fan service (I’m looking at you Entertainment District Art). This anime has every shonen trope you could ever imagine; a training arc, an exam arc, a meeting with the first ... Akatsuki member arc, Akatsuki members, sword techniques, cheap comic-relief, and excessive fan-service by the second-half of Season 2 (yes Season 2 is split into a movie and a TV series for some reason). I don’t know what else to say except: this anime is overrated, mediocre, and overhyped for a lot of obvious reasons. To start off, the sword techniques and the principles behind them are barely explained. All I got from this anime’s power system is that good breathing is key to getting stronger. That’s it. The show never explained how Tanjiro mastered ten sword techniques. He just dodged traps on a mountain for two years. I feel like Tanjiro just executes a random sword technique depending on what the plot needs. During the Final Selection Arc, Tanjiro slices the head of a powerful enemy because “random bs go!” It’s like the showrunners were like, “Hey, here’s a new sword technique that Tanjiro happened to learn for this specific situation. Don’t worry about how or when he learned it. Just look at the pretty water animation.” In addition, two of Tanjiro’s friends are annoying and cringe. One of them can only use one technique while he’s unconscious; the other is a buff dude with the face of a cute girl. Both of them contribute nothing to the show except constant yelling, whining, and cheap comic-relief. One arc is them falling into an Orochimaru trick-house, another arc where rest inside an inn, and another arc where they fight Sasori from Temu. The last arc is them meeting the elite jonins of the Demon Slayer Corp. I think it would have been better if Giyu was the one who accompanied Tanjiro and Nezuko instead of Zenitsu and Inosuke. As for Season 2, the main villain in the Mugen Train Arc is basically a guy who can use genjutsu to control people’s dreams; meanwhile, the Entertainment District Arc is chock full of fan-service and plot armor asspulls (also the Hashira for this arc is a certified creep who owns three wives and smacked the butt of an underage girl). It’s either people’s standards for fresh quality anime have degraded over time, or people just consume every mediocre piece of media if the production is good. The only reason why I lasted until the Entertainment District Arc is because I wanted to give Season 2 a fair chance - that maybe Season 1 was just testing the waters. Overall, I really have nothing else to say. It’s just a very generic shonen anime with mediocre writing, mediocre characters, and a very good production team behind it. It would have been nice if Ufotable just invested their time and resources into One Punch Man Season 3 instead of this slop.
