Synopsis

Tanjirou Kamado lives with his impoverished family on a remote mountain. As the oldest sibling, he took upon the responsibility of ensuring his family's livelihood after the death of his father. On a cold winter day, he goes down to the local village in order to sell some charcoal. As dusk falls, he is forced to spend the night in the house of a curious man who cautions him of strange creatures that roam the night: malevolent demons who crave human flesh.

When he finally makes his way home, Tanjirou's worst nightmare comes true. His entire family has been brutally slaughtered with the sole exception of his sister Nezuko, who has turned into a flesh-eating demon. Engulfed in hatred and despair, Tanjirou desperately tries to stop Nezuko from attacking other people, setting out on a journey to avenge his family and find a way to turn his beloved sister back into a human.

The Demon Slayer manga is a solid 10/10, a truly exceptional work. While some may criticize its core story as "basic," this dismisses the incredible emotional depth and unforgettable characters Gotouge crafts. The manga excels in delivering impactful fights and poignant moments that genuinely evoke tears, excitement, and profound empathy, particularly for both the Hashira and even the Upper Moons. Their strengths, flaws, and reactions to the brutal world feel deeply resonant. Unable to wait for the anime's Infinity Castle arc adaptation, I dove into the manga and was astounded. Incredible things are coming, and I'm certain a specific, upcoming Sanemi scene will emotionally devastate ...

"Demon Slayer," or as I affectionately refer to it, "The Encyclopedia of Shounen Tropes: Demon Edition," does indeed feel like someone decided to play Shounen Bingo and ended up shouting "Bingo!" before the end of the first chapter. It's as if the manga sat down, made a checklist of every single shounen trope out there, and then proceeded to tick off each one with the determination of a protagonist facing their final boss battle.

Now, don't get me wrong, there's a certain charm to sticking to the classics. After all, tropes become tropes for a reason—they work. And "Demon Slayer" works... in the way a microwave ...

What am I even supposed to make of this manga?

Expectations are everything, and more often than not can hurt your perception of a story if you have overblown or inaccurate ones. But I can’t lie, nor can I think up a better way to open my review; Demon Slayer is a disappointment. Part of that is my own fault from having preconceived ideas about the source material from watching the show, and part of it is the fault of the manga itself, but nevertheless I think it’s a pretty good example of how to fall into a trap of enjoying amateur writing on aesthetic ...
