Bolt Action - Gung Ho: USMC Raiders Theatre Selector for the attack on Makin Island, 1942

GUNG HO

USMC RAIDERS, MAKIN ISLAND 1942

Up until August of 1942, The Japanese Empire had seemed unstoppable as it took Guam, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies and other significant territories in the south pacific. Something needed to be done to halt the tide of invasion. While US Marine Corps invaded Guadalcanal, a secondary much smaller operation would be launched a thousand miles away against Japanese forces on the Makin Atoll. This operation was undertaken by the 2nd Raider Battalion, of the newly formed Marine Raiders, and was led by the extremely unorthodox Evans F. Carlson.

On August 17th, 1942 the 2nd Marine Raiders were secretly delivered to Makin by submarine and landed ashore at night using rubber rafts. Their mission was to wreak enough havoc that the Japanese would hesitate before sending reinforcements from the Marshal Islands to aid IJA forces on Guadalcanal.  Without outside support, these soldiers carried the weapons and equipment they needed to complete the mission. Despite being scattered by the surf on the way onto the island, leadership issues during the operation and problems escaping the island’s strong tide when leaving, the Raider’s hit and run mission was touted by Allied media as a success and proved that the unbeatable Japanese could indeed be beaten.

Bolt Action - Some Uniform and Gear Displays From The National WW2 Museum

While on my honeymoon, I spent a glorious afternoon at The National WW2 Museum in New Orleans.  I might have taken a TON of pictures while on this visit. One of the areas, whose pictures I keep returning to, was the uniforms and infantry equipment displays. Keeping in mind that this is a US focused museum, they did a fantastic job of displaying basic US uniforms (from various theatres) and the uniforms of some of the foes that US servicemen met of the field of battle.  Here are photos from a few of these displays.

Bolt Action - AAR: USMC vs Japanese in a game of Point Defence

Recently I played a 1000 game where my USMC faced off against Japanese ran by a friend of the site (Mal). We were eagerly anticipating this game as both of us built our forces for the express reason to fight the opposing nation so it was a historical grudge off!

Hey guys, Tobu here and speaking of TANK BATTLES I’ve got some pics of a couple Shermans I finished recently for my Marines. I wasn’t originally planning on making a guide when I was building and painting these, but hopefully the pics I took along the way are enough to get an idea of what went on!

Bolt Action - Patch Checks Out The Often Overlooked LVT

There is something amazingly iconic about the Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT). Used by the USMC during the Pacific campaign, It had many variants. Designed to ferry men and equipment from the USMC warships to the beach and beyond with a degree of protection from small arms and explosive fragmentation, as well as provide a level of fire support until the heavies arrived. According to my old friend Wikipedia, a total of 18,621 in various forms were delivered for use during WW2; so the LVT well-deserves a place on our tabletop.
