Bolt Action - Review: Warlord Games Finnish 75 PSTK/40 Anti-Tank Gun

Hi everyone, after a work induced hiatus I've returned. Some time ago I started collecting Finns, that journey has been long and arduous and thoroughly enjoyable. My most recent acquisition however was the Warlord Games Finnish Pak40 medium anti-tank gun.

Bolt Action - Review: Warlord Games Finnish 37 PSTK/36 Bofors AT Gun

I'll begin by stating that in the 18 months that I've been playing Bolt Action, I've never had much time for anti-tank guns. They're generally a bit of a lame duck unless you can secure one of the tastier options that has improved HE capabilities. My own experiences taking AT guns are as follows: I deploy my anti-tank gun and then watch as my opponent either hides their tank or they deploy it on the opposite side of the board and I'm left with a fairly pricey unit that hasn't got anything substantial to engage. The sad thing is that AT guns were prolific during WW2 and they aren't really represented well with our game. You can be sure that any British player worth his salt will field a 25pdr (and let's be honest here, why wouldn't you?) but that's mainly because of the dual purpose role that piece has. And don't even get me started on iconic pieces like the hallowed Flak 88. Arguably one of the most effective and prolific pieces on the Axis side of the conflict and our game has all but relegated it to an oddity. It's now a piece where if you attend an event and your opponent rolls out a 88, you kind of put your hand on his shoulder and smile in a consolatory sort of way.

Bolt Action - Finnish army showcase and review

By Tristan

Hi guys, this week I'm going to be looking at the Finnish army and some of the wonderful, tough, hopeless and cheesy options that are available. As anyone who listens to the Baconburgers podcast will know, recently I've bought and started to run a new army. I've run the Americans and then the British. After this I found myself wanting to move away from the major powers and explore the minor powers. My first stop was the Finns.

Bolt Action - Warlord Games Resin BT42 Review

By Tristan

For quite sometime now I've toyed with the idea of getting away from the Americans and the British and exploring a minor nation. If you listen to either the Baconburgers or the Ghost Army Podcast, you may be aware that eventually my quest has led me to the Finnish army. Upon looking at the army lists and the amazing troop options that the Finns are allowed, I cast my eyes to the tanks and their armour options.

Osprey Books - Finland at War Vol 1 - A Review

By Old Man Morin

Many of us in the wargaming world, particularly those of us who come from fantasy or sci-fi based
games systems, rely heavily on background material, or 'fluff' to inspire our choice of armies and units. When I started playing Bolt Action I discovered a new world, rich with information about units and battles within what some consider to be a "short" war. 'The Armies of...' and the Bolt Action Theatre books provide a glimpse into these conflicts and the forces that fought in them but because of their length and purpose, this information is condensed down to brief overviews. Now there is quite a lot of information online and there are literally thousands of books and biographies about this global conflict and to be honest the sheer volume of text can be daunting. To focus my searches I have been researching things that I find interesting when reading Bolt Action books. Not the most holistic view of the war but it is a starting point (and I have been at it for close to 4 years now). Now Osprey publishing puts out vast numbers of short, soft cover books covering everything from specific units and battles to technology and tactics. These are great resources and I am sure I will discuss them again in an article soon. Today though, I want to talk about something else. Their 'Finland at War' series.

Bolt Action - Review: Trenchworx Resin BT-42

A few weeks ago, Old Man Morin did an article on painting white wash (here) in which he also spoke about the BT-42 made by Trenchworx.  His BT-42 was one of the early 3D printed versions, while today's article is on the new resin versions that Nate aka. RapidMonkey, is churning out at Trenchworx.

Bolt Action - How to Paint White Wash The Old Man Morin Way

Welcome back gang,

Old Man Morin here with a look at how I paint dirty, warn Winter War tanks. Now if you missed it earlier, Judson also wrote an article a few weeks back on the same topic though his methods are very different from mine. You can find his great article here.

Now as many of you know I have been chipping away at a Finn army for quite some time now. My newest addition is the formidable (on the Bolt Action table anyway) BT-42. Trenchworx makes an excellent kit for this tank. Up until recently it was 3D printed and was pricey BUT rejoice!!! It is now out in resin, for a fraction of the cost. The model I am painting today is the 3D printed one (I couldn't help myself) but I look forward to seeing the resin kit in person (I have one in the mail).

Bolt Action - Börje Brotell, Finnish Tank Destroyer Ace

Welcome to Tanko Thursday, a semi-regular article for the next few weeks exploring some of the lesser known legendary tankers from the minor nations with house rules for representing them in your own Bolt Action Tank War battles. This week we look at Börje Brotell, Tank Destroyer Ace.

In 1943, Finland purchased 30 StuGs from Germany. They saw heavy action in the Battle of Tali-lhantala in June 1944 and following that Finland ordered another 29.

Bolt Action - Review: Old Man Morin Takes a Closer Look At Brigade Game's Finns

Well, it appears as though Hell has frozen over.  I, Old Man Morin, have finished my Germans and have moved onto my next epic project: Winter themed Finns.  Just prior to WW2 breaking out, Finland was invaded by the much larger and technologically advanced Soviet masses.  In what was later called the "Winter War," determined Finnish forces (aided by horrific winter conditions) fought a guerrilla style war and eventually succeeded in stopping the Russians in their tracks.  Listeners of the LRDG cast will know that I fell in love with the fighting spirit of these bad-asses and set about creating an army that would be fun to play and would look great on the table.

I have not figured out the Snow on the bases yet so they are just painted white (for now)

Bolt Action - Review: Baker Company - Winter War Finns

Last fall, Baker Company launched its first KickStarter, Winter War Wargaming Miniatures.  The KickStarter campaign was looking for start up funds so Baker Company could make 28mm Finns and Soviets.  Initially asking for a small amount of funding, this KickStarter was wildly successful.  Baker Company raised almost twenty times their funding goal from 428 backers.  The sweet spot for this Kick Starter cost about $120 US, and  that got you a platoon of either Finns or Soviets, plus more than a dozen stretch goals.  I have a large Soviet Army, so I pledged my money and chose the Finns as my reward.
