Mahishasura Mardini Stotram (Aigiri Nandini)

The Mahishasura Mardini Stotram, popularly recognized by its starting phrase, Aigiri Nandini, was composed by Adi Shankaracharya.  Even though some sources attribute the stotra to Ramakrishna Kavi, with due respect to him, one would be foolish to take the attribution away from the Hero of Hinduism, given the complexity and the rhythmic beauty of the composition.

During Navratri or Dussehra, the Mother Goddess is worshipped according to the Navadurga, or the nine special attributes of the Mother Goddess, each on one of the nine nights.  The tenth day, when the Mother Goddess was victorious is celebrated as Vijayadashami.  The stotra celebrates the victory of Maa Durga over the demon king Mahishasura, in essence, the victory of good over evil.

In this video I have broken down the phrases to facilitate proper pronunciation by those wishing to learn the stotra.

Bhakti Sudha, the primary source for this rendition does not have one paragraph, but for the sake of completion we have included it, as given in other sources (see references below).

Shiva Tandava Stotram

Such is the beauty of Sanatana Dharma that one of the chief villains of its itihasas, Ravana and his scholarly work are accorded a special status in its treasure trove of spiritual riches.

The Shiva Tandava Stotram is one such exquisite composition by Ravana, and speaks of the Great Dance of Dissolution of Lord Shiva, the Tandava.

It describes how Lord Shiva moves during the dance, and ends with the assurance that whoever recites this stotra will be blessed by Lord Shiva.  The famed temple figurine that represents the cosmic dance is Nataraja, one of the many manifestations of Lord Shiva.

In the video, I have broken down the lyrics to facilitate proper pronunciation, just as we did while learning to recite the shloka.

Kalabhairavashtakam

Lord Shiva, the meditative Lord of Kailasa also manifests Himself as Kala Bhairava, the dark, intense, fearsome God of Death/Time whose vehicle is the shvana – dog.  After all, Lord Shiva is the destroyer god among the Holy Trinity of Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva.  Kala Bhairaveshwara also happens to be our Kuladevata.

In the video, I have broken down the lyrics to facilitate proper pronunciation, just as we did while learning to recite the shloka.

As he did so often, that Hero of Hinduism, Adi Shankaracharya wrote this ashtakam, extolling the worldly and spiritual virtues of the Guardian Deity of Kashi, Kala Bhairava.

Reciting this shloka is said to ward off delusion, depression and anger, and take one close to the Supreme State of Bliss.

Lakshmi Nrusimha Karuna Rasa Stotram

Sri Adi Shankaracharya composed this hymn to address Lord Lakshmi-Narasimha (God Narasimha along with his divine consort, Goddess Lakshmi).

https://youtu.be/0LSU08ATs24

Lord Narasimha is the fourth avatara of Lord Vishnu who appeared in the court of King Hiranyakashyapu to help His bhakta, Prahlada.  He is known to be the angriest avatara of Lord Vishnu who ripped apart Hiranyakashyapu.

He could be placated only by the ardent supplication of Goddess Lakshmi and Prahlada.

Adi Shankara himself is said to have been saved by the Lord when a kapalika sought to behead him.

In this stotra Adi Shankara takes the position of a supplicant who is beseeching the Lord to guide him through the temptations and travails or samsara, or worldly existence.

Each of the seventeen verses ends with the refrain, Give me Thy hand O Lord!  Hence it is also called Lakshmi-Nrusimha Karavalambam Stotram.

Reciting this stotra regularly is said to reduce anger and related negative vibrations, leading one to bhakti and peace.

For the literal meaning of the stotra please visit the websites listed below.

Mahalakshmyashtakam

The Mahalakshmyashtakam, or Maha Lakshmi Ashtakam, is on octet sung in the praise of the Goddess of Grace and Prosperity, Maha Lakshmi, the Divine Consort of Maha Vishnu.

It is said to be composed by Indra, the King of Devas, and is present in the Padma Purana, one of the 18 Puranas that recount the anecdotes of Gods, Goddesses and Kings of yore.

When chanted on occasions of new beginnings, the Ashtakam is said to invoke the Goddess's blessings upon the event and its participants.

The Ashtakam hails Goddess Lakshmi as the Mother of Universe, and makes explicit all the benefits of chanting it regularly in the Phalashruti - the final 3 stanzas of the Ashtakam.

Here's the link for the video, and the transliteration and translation of the Ashtakam:

Lingashtakam

Lingashtakam is an octet of hymns in the praise of Lord Shiva.

The ashtakam is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, said to be an avatar of Lord Shiva

It addresses the linga aspect of Lord Shiva, that is, the physical representation of the column of Light of Creation.

Released on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri 2021, the ashtakam is known to bestow peace, fulfilment and salvation to one who chants it regularly.

It is particularly beneficial to chant this ashtakam on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri, which occurs on the 13th night/14th day of the Phalguna month of the Hindu calendar.

One can chant the ashtakam everyday before dawn or dusk, while physically/mentally focusing on the Shivalinga.

Shivashadakshara Stotram

The Shivashadakshara Stotram eulogizes Lord Shiva, one of the Holy Trinity of Sanatana Dharma.  It is taken from the Rudrayamala, a pre-tantric text that elaborates upon the Kundalini Yoga.

The beauty of the stotra lies in the fact that first syllable of each shloka collectively spells out the mantra, Om Nama Shivaya, meaning 'I bow to Lord Shiva'.  This is also why the stotra is called shadakshara, meaning six-syllabled, implying the six syllables that spell out the mantra (indicated in red in the video).

For the meaning of each of these syllables, read the earlier post on Om Nama Shivaya.  Read and watch Lingashtakam, the octet of praise of Lord Shiva.

Watch the video of Shivashadakshara Stotram here:

The transliteration into three languages (English, Hindi & Kannada) and the translation (into English) of this stotra is as follows:

Atah Shivashadakshara Stotram

Shri Sankata Nashana Ganesha Stotram

A stuti or stotra is a collection of shlokas recited as a eulogy of one's ishta devta (chosen deity).

In this stotra, taken from the Narada Purana, Lord Ganesha is invoked and His blessings are sought to remove one's obstacles.

The title, which can also be written as 'Sankashtahara Ganapathi Stotram', translates to: 'Ganesha's stotra that destroys troubles'.

Chanting this stotra regularly is said to bestow one with health, wealth and fulfilment of wishes.

It is recommended that this stotra is chanted first thing in the morning after ablutions, facing the East, while focusing on the image/idol of Lord Ganesha with bhakti.

Also read and listen about the other Ganesha mantra in this earlier post.

Here is the transliteration (into English, Hindi & Kannada) and translation (into English) of this stotra:

Prarthana shlokas

A shloka is a rhythmic verse recited as a prayer or as part of a meditative process.  A mantra is a phrase like a formula that is repeated to invoke spiritual fervour.  A stuti or stotra is a collection of shlokas recited as a eulogy of ishta devta (chosen deity).

My daughter and I are students of Sanskrit through shlokabhyasa (shloka classes).  With the blessings of our Guruji, we humbly present to you mantras/shlokas/stotras that we have learnt.

In this video prarthana (prayer) shlokas are presented that are recited at the beginning and end of shlokabhyasa:

The meaning of each of the shloka presented in the video is given below:

Gurure vagatihi Gurume vabhaje
Gurunaiva sahasmi namo Gurave
Na Guror paramam shishurasmi Guroho
Mati rasti Gurau mama pahi Gurau

Guru is my refuge, I pray to Guru
I prostrate in front of my Guru, I chant Guru’s name
I am an immature child without my Guru
I beseech Guru to save me from my ignorance

Agajanana padmarkam
Gajananam aharnisham
Anekadamtam bhatkanam
Ekadantam upasmahe

Just as lotus blooms in sunlight
Goddess Parvathi’s face lit up looking at Ganesha
The giver of boons to devotees
I meditate upon the Lord with single tusk

Vakratunda mahakaya
Kotisurya samaprabha
Avighnam Kurume deva
Sarva karyeshu sarvada

O Lord of the curved trunk and great body
One with the effulgence of a crore suns
Always remove all the obstacles
From all the tasks I undertake

Saraswathi namastubhyam varade kamarupini
Vidyarambham karishyami siddhir bhavatu me sada

Salutations to Goddess Saraswathi, who bestows boons
As I commence my studies, bless me with accomplishments

Namaste sharade devi kashmira puravasini
Tvamaham prarthaye nityam vidyam-buddhimcha dehi me

I bow to you Goddess Sharada (Saraswathi) whose abode is Kashmira
I pray to you ever that you may bestow upon me knowledge and wisdom

Hayagriva Hayagriva hayagriveti yo vadet
Tasya nihsarate vani jahnu kanyapravahavat

Upon repeated chanting of the name of Hayagriva (avatar of Lord Vishnu)
One’s speech flows mellifluously as the sacred Ganga

Asadhya sadhaka swamin asadhyam tava kim vada
Ramadhuta dayasindho matkaryam sadhayaprabho

O accomplisher of impossible tasks, truly what is impossible to you?
O benevolent emissary of Lord Rama, make my task possible to accomplish

Asatoma sadgamaya
Tamasoma jyotirgamaya
Mrityorma amrutangamaya
Om shantih shantih shantihi

O Lord, take me from lies to truth
Take me from darkness to light
Take me from death to immortality
Let there be peace, peace, peace

Kalevarshatu parjanyaha
Prithavi sasyshalinim
Deshoyam kshobharahitam
Sajjana santu nirbhayaha

May there be timely monsoons
May the Earth be green and productive
May the land be free of all problems
May the good citizens and sages be fearless

Sarve janah sukhino bhavantu
Samasta sanmangalani bhavantu
Om shantih shantih shantihi

May all be happy
May everything be auspicious
May there be peace, peace, peace

As can be gleaned from the meaning of shlokas presented, Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) recognizes the importance of satya (truth), dharma (righteousness), personal development, wisdom, oneness of all humanity, and the welfare of all living beings.

We hope that this presentation will help you in your own learning of mantras, shlokas, stotras and Sanatana Dharma.
