I must confess I am only now learning about Akon, a dual-citizen Senegalese-American rapper and R & B singer.

But first, here’s his greatest hit, “Smack That,” from 2006.

In 2018, Akon, whose real name is Alioune Badara Thiam, announced nothing less than the beginning of the future for Africa.

He claimed to have six billion dollars in financing, but he couldn’t say from whom because of confidentiality agreements. Akon City, modestly named for himself, was modeled directly on the futuristic image of Wakanda from the movie Black Panther. That narration was in a Senegalese language, Wolof. I can’t help wondering what those buildings are supposed to be made of, but they were to be offices, homes, shops, resorts, a school, and a 5,000-bed hospital — all run by solar power.

The place was going to operate on a new cryptocurrency, likewise named for its founder, Akoin. It would eventually become the entire continent’s currency: “One Africa. One Koin.”

The site was 2,000 acres on the Atlantic coast of Senegal and would be a great leap forward for the local village of Mbodiene. People were yearning to believe in Akon. He was on the cover of LA Style, “the most influential issue,” with the city shimmering in the background.

In September 2020, Akon, in a light blue suit, helped unveil the cornerstone for Phase I of construction. Two years later, the stone was still there, but nothing else.

The BBC ran an article noting that, despite appearances, “Akon says his much-delayed plans for Akon City . . . are 100,000 percent moving.” He said that critics will look “super stupid” in the future.

Alas, not much has changed. No roads, no housing, no power grid. Can you really put up big buildings on land like this?

Another puzzle. Hussein Bakri is the guy who came up with all those flashy visuals for Akon City.

His resume is stuffed with razzle-dazzle designs, but I can find no evidence any of these things was ever built.

Last year, a black video blogger with a channel called KNT set out to see for himself how Wakanda was coming along. It was a hard slog just getting there. It’s touching that he’s still not ready to say the whole thing is a swindle.

I suspect this guy was not an Akoin investor. Those people were left with nothing at all, despite grandiose claims: “Akoin will be used as a common medium of transfer between Africa’s 54 countries . . . Allowing African citizens and entrepreneurs to engage with the digital economy with only a mobile phone.”

Except that the Senegalese authorities had always pointed out that Senegal uses the CFA Franc, and Akoin could not be legally used for payments in Akon City.

Nothing daunted, the site is still full of slick graphics like this one explaining how the Akoin Ecosystem works for you.

I did not accept the site’s invitation to “Purchase AKN on BitMart.” That’s just as well. The Binance crypto platform reports no trades in Akoin since 2023, and a value of zero dollars.

Akoin still has a Telegram channel, which I joined to see the latest buzz. I did not find much happiness.

Akon City is back in the news. “Akon’s futuristic $6bn city project in Senegal abandoned, BBC told.”

Oh dear. However, this guy, Serigne mamadou Mboup, still has big plans for the site. He’s the head of SAPCO — unfortunate name, I’d say — which promotes tourism in Senegal.

And, son of a gun, he’s got his own video of what the sleepy village of Mbodiène will soon be like.

What’s more, Akon is part of it! “What Akon’s preparing with us is a realistic project, which Sapco will fully support,” Mboup said just this month.

Instead of $6 billion, this caper will cost only $1.2 billion. Senegal wants private investors to stump up 90 percent — more than a billion. Good luck with that. With sovereign debt at 119 percent of GDP, it is the most indebted country in Africa, and its bonds are rated as junk.

SAPCO says it has investors who are interested but won’t name them. Sounds familiar.

I have a suggestion. Further down the coast of Senegal at Cap Skirring, there is a Club Med.

It has a 9-hole golf course, 6 tennis courts, 2 restaurants and 3 bars, and has operated profitably at above 80 percent capacity since 1973.

So far as I can tell, development at Cap Skirring didn’t cost the government of Senegal anything. And Akon the Great had nothing to do with it, either.

The SAPCO folks insist that Mbodiène has potentiel attractif.

If that’s true, I would think Club Med or someone else would have designs on it. But we’ll just have to wait and see. Whatever happens, we won’t get Wakanda.

  1. Sadly, Blacks can’t build “Wakanda”. That’s their issue, though. (Not a “problem” for the White man or the Asian man…)

Perhaps, with a Eugenics Programme’s help, they could.
Although, changing their nature so drastically, one is left to wonder: Are they still them?

Blacks will blame whites, saying that whites are interfering in their projects.

Black Americans won’t be leaving, because a lot of them feel they built America from the beginning.

It’d be best to give the South to Black Americans as a separate homeland—for them and them only.

White America can live in the North and the Pacific West.

If Africa is so great, why aren’t a lot of blacks from the United States trying to move there? And why are they still pouring into the UK and other parts of Europe instead of fleeing to these so called “amazing” Africa places you’re pulling out the ass to prove a point here.

Stupid Idea. Since these primitives didn’t even come here (to North America) on their own volition. Plus building a primitive hut does not impress anyone. As far as “Wakanda” stop believing bullshit made up in a Fantastic Four comic book from the 1960’s that a jew boy from the lower east side of Manhattan jack (Kurtzberg) kirby, I know again with the German then Anglo last name even though he was an alien jew who wasn’t German or Anglo-Saxon…Stop believing all this made up BS already…

  15. @Currdog73

When the ex-slaves settled Liberia, they ran the place like a bunch of White plantation owners. Made the natives carry them around in sedan chairs. Maybe that’s why the revolt of the original Africans got so brutal.

Looks like one of the many insta-malls which routinely dot places like West LA. Pray tell, which brilliant “Afro-principles” were involved in the design, materials, and structural engineering of this generic palace which you can find any day of the week in Thailand, Duluth, Tajikstan, or a comic book. It would be fun to know the names of all the white guys who were actually involved.

The answer has been given by several African academics … when in Africa
you “make it”, the entire extended family descends on you and leaves you in the
dung again; this is not considered “leeching” but quite normal (as is, for the
same reason, corruption i.e. it is considered antisocial if you are not corrupt)
and constitutes a major disincentive to returning after graduation and results in a
major brain drain on what already is an intellectual wasteland.
    – For the same reason Jews want nothing to do with Israel – among Jews there is no
benefit to being a Jew; the major horror of the Pale was that the Jews had to defraud
each other (as Catherine the Great, in the course of her social reforms, intended it 😁) –
as a result, they became poor; much the same is easily noticeable in Israel
(the guilt for not making aaliyah is then magically turned into remittances and
    rabid “support”).

If Akon (or anyone else for that matter) wants to build Wakanda over there, they best sign the contract with Chinese engineering companies. And then it might be hit or miss, depending upon whether the Africans have gotten their gravel supply chain in order.

VERY nice mall! And nice apartments, too! The only thing I saw missing were Africans. Yes, there were a few guides and employees — but where were the shop owners, the clerks, the janitors, and of course, the customers. I have seen similar projects right here in the US that looked WONDERFUL, right up until the doors were opened to the Africans living here. Within six months the places had bars on the windows, roaming police looking for thieves, and trash on the floor. OK, call me cynical, but my cynicism is based on experience. And please understand, I would LOVE to see any majority African area, regardless of where on earth it is, become prosperous, clean, safe, and self supporting. Truly, it would be WONDERFUL! But I have been disappointed so far, and without serious eugenics and breeding programs, I doubt it will happen. Good luck. Sincerely, good luck! I hope the programs work.

Want to know what Burkina Faso looks like right now? There is no Google street view in the country (my go-to for seeing what a nation REALLY looks like) but if you go to the capital, you can at least pull up some photos. 95% of the pictures are taken along the few paved roads in the capital, but once you get even one street away from the main paved highway, everything is dirt and trash. The trash is a near universal marker for Africans. Whether it is in Burkina Faso, in Paris, in Detroit, or anywhere, wherever you find Africans, you will find trash thrown on the ground.

Grateful for that factino. I knew the Brits freed some slaves then, but your numbers staggered me.

They taught me in kiddie school that the U.S. won the War of 1812. Not at all! It was a total flop. The only good things to come out of that war were “The Star Spangled Banner” and Andrew Jackson’s rise to fame.

Voltaire said that “history is the propaganda of the victors”. In this case, history was the propaganda of the losers.

Very true. Whenever there is some TV show that wants to display the squalor of Africa, the set is remarkably much cleaner than the reality.

  28. Mike Tre says:

These pre-humans are not able to grasp the concept of what really builds a city in the first place: and that is a gathering of people who do so in a specific location because there is either an economic or strategic reason to do so. Cities in the US started out as camps or forts, a staging area for industries like mining, foresting, and barging. Infrastructure and manufacturing came after that.

There is no industrial or mineral basis to build that city. If it were ever built, which it won’t be, what economic base will sustain it? Other than endless free money from the West or pure magic, there is none.

These bipeds are not fit for civilization.

  29. TrumpWon says:
    @Vergissmeinnicht

Blacks couldn’t even *imagine* Wakanda, let alone actually design or build it. A white man (Stan Lee) had to do that for them, out of pity for the black children who had no heroes of their own race, no inspiring mythology or lore, which of course makes some sense, since usually one needs a written language to transmit the mythos across time. Granted, the memetic power of mythology can be propagated across many different media, written language being only the most powerful attainable by a pre-technological civilization.

Typically, primitive societies have relied on the oral tradition – songs, poems, chants, or incantations that can be passed down to generations. Some have been bolstered by primitive iconography or symbolic art such as petroglyphs or cave drawings.

But African blacks have largely never progressed past the simple oral traditions of songs and stories. There are very few sub-Saharan examples of anything that could serve as even a precursor for a legitimate writing system, hence there is little potential for any sort of “tradition” beyond the usual ghost ancestor stories and animist legends.

Of course, this does not mean there aren’t a handful of blacks capable of that sort of imagination, but it does mean there is no tradition of imagination. Certainly there are not any oral traditions in the vein of say, Jules Verne, or any other imaginings that might be properly deemed “futurism”. Since the only sophisticated culture most Africans have ever encountered in the continent are colonial, all their “source material” is not just foreign, but not easily appropriated. Even mimicry fails since they lack the capacity for production of the colonial infrastructure; left to their own devices, everything built during colonial administration decays and can never be rebuilt.

Wakanda as an organic concept is truly an impossibility for a people that have no history; they also have no future beyond that which can be grifted or gifted by superior people.
