Great War French

Having finished the refurbishment and recruitment to the 28 mm Renegade 1914 Germans I moved on to their French opponents.

I already had enough infantry (though some needed painting) and just needed to add an artillery piece and an MMG which I bought from Great War Miniatures.

The officers and a couple of extra infantrymen:

The M1897 75 mm Field Gun and crew (from Great War Miniatures):

The two MMG, one Renegade and one Great War:

This picture shows the huge difference in size between the manufacturers:

As with the Germans I think the additions blend in okay with the original ones. I should probably have done something about the eyes, I really can't paint eyes and they all look permanently surprised! Even more so than the Germans the Renegade figures are huge, the Great War ones are not small but look small in comparison!

But for the current lock down I'd have tried to arrange a game for them but as it is I think it will be a while before they see any action.

Wings of War WW1

We used to play Wings of War quite often but had not played for years so when Jerry suggested a multi-player game I happily agreed to join in.

Thus six of us took to the air in various WW1 planes. In the first game I used the mighty Roland, notable mainly for it's ability to fire all round.

Firing on a Nieuport  17:

A SPAD 13 joins in the fight:

My Roland is hit and smoke pours from the engine:

Game 2 and I have changed to an SE5a, chasing a Fokker DVII:

Meeting an Albatross DV:

Game three and I have an Albatross DIII facing a DH4 and a Bristol Fighter:

More action:

The last game and my final plane, the Sopwith Camel:

The Red Baron is shot down by my Camel:

Taking on the Fokker DVII, the French SPAD kept getting in the way:

A final shot at the DVII fails to down it and it runs for home:

A fun evening and great to get the planes out of the box again. My vague memories that two seater planes were very efficient (especially the Roland) were right and the Bristol Fighter was devastating as it shoots the same as a fighter both forwards and backwards while taking loads of damage!

Great War Germans

One of the many abandoned projects I've found after going through all my boxes of figures was some Great War 1914 Germans and French. The figures were made by the now defunct as far as I can tell Renegade Miniatures and were painted many years ago, I think when I wasn't painting much 28 mm stuff with no real plan to use them.

I had around 35 Germans, all painted, and an unpainted field gun picked up from a club mate who rather oddly got it and some French infantry in a job lot of Space Marines he bought! So almost but not quite enough to make up a potential CoC force.

Searching on Ebay found another 18 badly painted figures available cheaply so I bought them. When they arrived they looked a lot better than in the photographs but I thought I might as well repaint them anyway to match the old ones.

The first group of 10:

Another 10 advancing through some shell holes:

The third group of 10:

The final 10 moving through an orchard:

Machine gun support:

Artillery support:

Finally the High Command enjoying the fruits of France:

Considering how long ago I painted the first lot the new ones look similar, slightly different colours (partly because the originals were probably painted in Humbrol enamels), and the bases are not quite the same. There is also the eye situation, I had tried (and failed as usual) to paint eyes on when I did  the old ones but didn't bother with the new ones as painting eyes never works for me!

I am particularly fond of the rather well fed officer with the monocle and his skinny sidekick on the right, the table of food suits him perfectly.

There are enough to use in CoC I think and Jerry has some suitable opponents though he uses a different set of rules. Not sure how often they will get used but they might get a game or two.
