Chain of Command Japanese v British

Not having played Chain of Command for a while and with Jerry having painted up some 20mm Far East British we thought we'd play a game to get back into it before Version 2 of the rules was available.

I used my Japanese and we took a scenario from the 'Jitra' PSC called "Roadblock at Nangka" where the Japanese are facing a delaying action by the British and have to capture the British Line of Communication marker.

The Japanese deploy from their forward JoP hoping to rush the British before they can react:

Immediately the plan collapses as a British section appears almost on the flank of the Japanese:

More British appear and casualties/shock mount for the Japanese:

More Japanese arrive:

They are supported by a Chi-Ha tank:

Which promptly explodes when hit by British AT gun fire:

At this stage the Japanese decide to withdraw. As this miserable defeat had taken so little time we decided to have a repeat game!

This time the Japanese prepare more carefully with sections deploying on overwatch on the jungle line together with the tank:

This gives them a much improved firebase for when the British do appear:

A complete turn around from the first game as this time it is the British who suffer heavily and withdraw:

Two games that really show the value of preparation in CoC! The first one with my hurriedly put together plan to rush the British failed dismally (though it could have worked...), the second where I prepared carefully and did much better.

It was nice to get back into CoC and with the revised rules coming out soon there will probably be a revival of interest in playing again.

Midgard Imperial Roman v Ancient British

Midgard again against Dave, this time using two armies which I painted for Infamy but then sold to Dave as I wasn't that impressed with Midgard. I took the Romans tasked with defending a hill while Dave had the Britons aiming to destroy the invaders.

The Romans prepare to meet the Barbarian hordes:

Chariots and slingers exchange fire:

British warbands prepare to storm the hill:

Chariots and cavalry attack the centre:

The slingers hold on:

Half the Romans win and push on off the hill, the other half break and run:

More Romans leave the hill in the centre but the flanks are collapsing:

Only a few Romans remain , they won't last long and the battle is over:

Nice to get to play with these armies again, the Romans were rather overwhelmed despite having the hill to defend (though probably foolishly I moved some of them off the hill!). Having played a few games of Midgard now I think it is a nice set of rules but I'm not sure I'll play it a lot partly due to not really having that many armies suitable for it. I'm sure if I had a 28mm Fantasy army I'd be much keener, fortunately I'm not keen enough to buy and paint such an army!

MWWBK Action on the NW Frontier!

The first game for my 20mm Indian army for Men Who Would Be Kings against Gary's Afghans. We diced for the scenario and ended up with Sikh's having to capture an objective (a ford in a river) from the Afghans.

Afghans, hordes of them, lurk in a village near the ford:

The Indian force consists of three groups of Sikh regular infantry and some Bengal Lancers. A war correspondent watches from the ridgeline:

The Indians advance while the Afghans send a strong force around the Indian right on the other side of the river:

One Sikh group turns to face the outflanking Afghans:

Afghan horse charge the Bengal Lancers! The Lancers are great if they get to charge, less so if they are charged:

The Lancers are massacred losing four men to the Afghans two:

The Afghan horse follow up and disperse the rest of the Lancers. Not a good start for the Indians!:

Meanwhile Afghan warriors attempt to close with Sikh infantry but are stopped in their tracks by Sikh fire. The other Sikh groups shoot down the victorious Afghan horse:

The other Afghan horse are making good progress around the flank:

The Afghan warriors are still lurking in the rocky ground:

More Afghan warriors charge into Sikh infantry:

Losses are heavy on both sides and the Sikhs are pushed back:

Again the Afghans follow up:

The warriors are across the river:

The warriors in the rocky ground finally charge home but are driven off though the Sikhs lose men as well:

The other Afghan cavalry also attack though they have lost a few men to fire:

Afghans close in for the kill:

The situation is looking grim for the Indians:

Sensing victory the Afghans close in from all directions:

It is all over for the Sikh infantry with the Afghans triumphant:

Another invasion of Afghanistan ends in disaster! I failed to keep my groups together and also used the Lancers badly, I should have kept them in reserve to make sure they could attack rather than being attacked.

Gary kept the pressure on from all directions right from the start and I'll need to have a re-think for the next game......

TMOCB USMC v NVA

Returning to the jungles of Vietnam saw Gary using the NVA against my US Marines. The NVA have not had an outing for a while and produce a rather different game in which the Marines are scattered around the villages looking for caches of food and arms when the NVA arrive.

It's quiet out there, too quiet!:

Lt. Donovan finds a cache of food and destroys it:

Sgt. Rambo finds more hidden food supplies that also go up in smoke:

Sgt. Elias locates some arms and ammunition, so far things are going well:

Sgt. Rambo excavates more food, the NVA will go hungry tonight:

Enemy in sight! Lt. Donovan spots NVA lurking in the jungle:

Remarkably accurate Marine shooting takes out three out of the four NVA bases leaving only the NVA Platoon Commander standing:

Not everything goes Donovan's way though as a VC ambush from the Temple results in one Marine base down:

Donovan quickly calls in the Medivac to take the casualties to safety:

Needing a single '4' on seven dice to move into the next village sector Rambo fails to move:

Lt. Donovan calls down an artillery strike on another NVA section:

More NVA appear, things are hotting up:

Sgt. Cowboy (standing in for Sgt. Barnes who is in Tokyo on R&R) appears but is ambushed by the VC:

The artillery strike downs an NVA base but also takes out an innocent peasant. As ever the press is there to record it:

Up to now pretty much everything has gone the Marines way. However, things can change quickly and one of Sgt. Elias' bases is taken out by the NVA:

Things escalate quickly for Elias, with two NVA sections pouring fire in from different directions only Elias and Pvt. Buster the dog team are still standing:

Elias and Buster are down, the situation is grim:

Lt. Donovan calls in another artillery strike which decimates one of the NVA sections:

Sgt. Cowboy was attempting to move to Sgt. Elias's assistance but was too late. Meanwhile Lt. Donovan has also lost another base. The situation is becoming desperate:

Sgt. Cowboy spots the NVA platoon commander (who had been hiding in a bamboo thicket!) attempting to join his men across the road:

The NVA commander goes down in a hail of lead:

Sgt. Cowboy leads his men into the temple, the other half of which is held by an NVA section:

One base is lost in the firefight:

Where is Sgt. Rambo while all this has been going on? Making little progress is the answer, he is still delayed in the village he started in:

The firefight in the Temple is brutal, more losses on both sides:

Another artillery strike lands perfectly but does no damage at all:

Sgt. Cowboy and his men are all down! That's two USMC sections wiped out, very bad news indeed for the Americans:

Carnage in the 'Temple of Doom':

The end, this is the end my friend. Huge losses on both sides in the Temple and the jungle opposite:

One of the most bloodthirsty games of TMOCB I've played, two sections of USMC wiped out and numerous NVA bases taken out. For a while it looked like it would be a walkover for the Marines but Gary fought back very aggressively and, crucially, prevented the Americans medivacing almost all of their casualties.

The final VP count gave the outcome as a minor NVA victory, largely as I rolled very well on the VP for the food caches I'd destroyed earlier in the game. It certainly seemed like a serious loss to me with two sections wiped out!

TMOCB are a great set of rules, I really enjoyed the solo games I played initially and both Gary and Dave have taken to them. I should really paint up the 'Ruff Puff's' I have so we can try the Mountain Tribes scenario but next perhaps we will play out a Firebase attack for a change.
