Bag the Hun USN v IJN

Jerry and I continued our efforts to become more proficient at Bag the Hun with another Pacific set game. This time I had the USN with 6 Wildcats escorting 3 Devastator torpedo bombers attacking a Japanese battleship. Jerry had 6 defending Zero's.

The American pilots head for the battleship:

Zero's move to intercept:

The Wildcats attempt to head off the Zero's:

More Zero's appear:

The Zero's close with the Devastators:

Planes whirl in all directions:

One Devastator is forced to ditch in the sea, luckily the crew survive:

The other two Devastators though manage to get their torpedoes away!

A Wildcat tails a Zero and shoots it down:

Wildcats and Zero's melee:

Another Zero goes down:

Flak from the battleship downs another Devastator. The crew are not so lucky and don't survive:

One torpedo hits the Japanese battleship! Disaster occurs though as it turns out to be a dud:

Another Zero is shot down:

The fight begins to break up with planes on both sides heading for home:

The Americans manage to catch one last Zero taking their score to 4 with 2 Devastators lost:

We are gradually getting the hang of BtH and adding in the torpedo attack certainly made it more interesting, I was really pleased to launch the torpedoes and really disappointed when one hit and failed to explode!

The rules are very comprehensive and not actually that complicated but there is a lot to remember and again I'm sure we missed a few things. The campaign system looks great fun but unfortunately I'm not sure we will have the time to play one, perhaps something for the future!

Bag the Hun USN and IJN

Some more planes for Bag the Hun (or Cruel Seas) to try to make the games more balanced!

Firstly for the USN three SB2C Curtis Helldiver    :

Secondly eight F4F Wildcats:

For the IJN three Mitsubishi G4M Betty bombers:

To add to the fighters six Mitsubishi J2M3 'Jack':

According to the catalogue these should have been Kawasaki NIK2-J Shinden (George) but in fact I think they are Jack's as the George looks nothing like this!:

I much prefer the green paint job for the Japanese and considered repainting the ones I'd already done in white but decided not to! With the Wildcats being less effective than the Hellcats I did previously hopefully this will make our games a bit more balanced.

As ever this project has grown a fair bit, being pleased with the Japanese bombers I might add a few more and I already have four Lightnings to paint for the Americans!

Bag the Hun US Navy v Imperial Japanese Navy

Gary and I's second game of BtH, this time trying out the bombing rules with Gary taking the attacking Japanese and me the defending Americans. Gary had four Zero's and three dive-bombing Val's while I had four Hellcat's.

The convoy with its combat air patrol:

The Zero's approach the convoy and the Hellcat's move to intercept:

Both sides zoom around trying to gain an advantage as the Val's appear:

The Val's manage to evade the Hellcat's attack:

The Hellcat formation splits up with two attempting to engage the Val's while the other pair head off the Zero's:

The situation is complicated!:

The first casualty of the encounter as a Zero explodes! The pilot is very lucky and is thrown clear, managing to open his parachute and land in the sea:

The Val's prepare to make their attack, picking out one of the larger merchantmen:

The merchantmen await the attack:

Two Hellcat's attempt to prevent the Val's attacking the convoy:

The Val's dive! Two bombs result in close misses, throwing water high into the air:

The third Val, piloted by an Ace, however lands it's bomb right on the ship! The result is engine room damage which will slow the merchantman down:

As the Val's attempt to escape one is hit by a Hellcat and explodes:

At this point the raid was over with the rest of the aircraft dispersing safely. The final count was one Val shot down, one Zero down and another probable kill (the pilot was a rookie and had lost control of his plane) for the Americans and one merchant ship damaged for the Japanese. The Hellcat's took no damage at all from the Japanese despite being fired on several times.

Adding the bombers into the game made it more interesting rather than just trying to shoot random planes down. However, after two games, it is obvious that the Japanese can't really cope with the much superior American Hellcat. The big difference is with the aircraft's robustness, rated at 3 the Hellcat is quite difficult to damage while the Zero and Val at only 1 are extremely fragile. The situation for the Japanese is made worse by the better firepower of the Hellcat. Having greater numbers of Japanese planes might help but might not as they would still find it hard to damage the Hellcats.

As for the rules I must admit I have been impressed with them. They are very comprehensive and well written being fairly easy to pick up (though I'm sure we miss a few things out as there is much to take in and several things we have ignored while trying to learn the rules basics). There is a lot of zooming about trying to get a shot in which isn't that easy and I suspect that if you played a lot you'd get to know all the different manoeuvres and the capabilities of the planes making it a very thoughtful game. The problem is that I can't see us playing enough games to get to this stage!

One thing I might do is invest in a few more planes, the Wildcat is much more comparable to the Zero than the Hellcat so some of those might be good and perhaps some larger bombers (probably Japanese) to add more variety.

Cruel Sea's Repaints

Being dissatisfied with the paint job I'd done on some of the earlier Cruel Sea's boats I thought I'd try repainting some of them and putting a bit more effort in than the 'slap some paint on and give them a wash of black' I'd used.

Two Fairmile D MGB 660's:

The previous paint job:

A Fairmile B RML 529 Rescue Boat:

Another USN Sub Chaser:

The old paint job:

Finally two R-23 R-boat's for the Kriegsmarine:

The old versions:

All I have left to do now is another USN Sub Chaser (which I have plans for), an armed trawler and the three large merchant ships plus the unpainted Flower Class Corvette. I won't be repainting the Vospers and E-Boats as I think they look fine as they are.

Cruel Sea's United States Navy

Having bought a very cheap Warlord Cruel Sea's US Navy Fleet to supplement or replace the ones I'd already done I painted them up in the 'new' for me Cruel Sea's painting style I used on the Japanese fleet.

One ship I didn't already have was the LCI-(L) landing craft:

A Coastal Cutter sub chaser:

The new one compared to the old one:

Three Higgins boats. Shockingly these are painted green rather than grey!:

Again the new one compared to the old:

Three ELCO boats:

Next to one of the old ones:

Three landing craft:

The new and the old:

I think the new ones have come out nicely though I'm not sure I prefer the green colour for the Higgins and ELCO's to the grey versions and the difference in the paint jobs is less apparent on the smaller ships. Certainly they were well worth the £26 investment (the Warlord site has the set at £73!).

I only have one unpainted ship left now, a Flower Class corvette for the British to be painted as HMS Compass Rose from 'The Cruel Sea' movie. Apart from that I'll probably gradually repaint the larger ships done in the old paint style but leave the smaller ones as they look fine as they are.
