In an electro-magnetically driven counter with numeral wheels driven by pawl-and-ratchet mechanism the spacing between the digits 1 and 0 is less by an amount X and the distance between 9 and 0 is greater by the amount X than the normal subtended angle of 36 degrees. Each impulse applied to magnet 2 swings lever 12 clockwise about its pivot 13 so that pawl 19 advances ratchet wheel 22 and numeral wheel 23 one step. A spring 24 prevents reverse movement of ratchet wheel 22 while lever 12 and pawl 19 are being returned under spring action. At transfer cam 25 closes contacts 26, 27 to impulse the magnet of the higher denomination, return movement of lever 12 causing a pawl 31 to engage between drive pins 29, 30 to rotate the numeral wheel a further distance X. This advances cam 25 so that contacts 26, 27 reopen so terminating the impulse. Resetting is effected by a long impulse, a fork 32 fixed to lever 12 alternately opening and closing contacts 34, 35 until the zero position is reached. At this point the return movement of lever 12 is restricted by pawl 31 engaging the drive pins 29, 30 so that the fork 32 leaves the contact-operating lever in clockwise position with the contacts 34, 35 open. Transfer is suspended during resetting by opening a contact in series with the transfer contacts.
