In a reversing pre-set counter transfer mechanism from the second and higher order denominations is conditioned for operation but is not operated until transfer is effected from the lowest order denomination. A number, for example of gallons of fuel to be dispensed, is set up on numeral wheels 16 by repeated operation of the associated pushbuttons 19 and slides 18. A projection 73a on slide 18 cams away transfer mechanism 64b, Fig. 9, while a pawl 67 advances a ratchetwheel 66 secured to the numeral wheel. Numeral wheel alignment. Before dispensing begins a knob 21, Figs. 1, 11, is repeatedly operated. A fork 97 grips a knurled nut 33 to prevent displacement of the drive shaft while a pawl 82 drives the units wheel to zero position. When the pawl 82 engages a long tooth 84 the drive becomes ineffective. In the dispensing operation the drive shaft 14 drives the units wheel in reverse through gears 45, 47 and an over-running clutch 48, 49, Fig. 7. As the units wheel passes from 0 to 9, in the reverse direction, a roller 54 rocks arm 55 clockwise whereby a transfer pawl 64 steps the tens wheel in reverse direction, Fig. 8. For the tens and higher orders if a pawl 64 falls into a deep notch on a cam 65 the associated transfer mechanism is conditioned for operation. The turned-over ends 64a of the pawls 64 overlap in descending order so that when the next transfer from units to tens takes place transfer from tens to hundreds is also effected if the necessary conditioning has been effected, and so on for higher orders. When all the numeral wheels reach zero position control cams 100 allow plate 102 to pivot clockwise to operate switch 24.
