Abstract
1332034 Zone-melting apparatus ELPHIAC SA 14 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970 8 July 1970] 1859/71 Heading BIS In apparatus, in which two or more inductive heating coils 7, 8 are moved in unison over an ingot 1, in a refractory boat 2, means are provided for adjustably weakening the magnetic field of the trailing coil, so that the sizes of the molten zones under each coil are the same. A greater heat output is required from the leading coil as this has to heat the -ingot up from cold. As shown, a short circuit ring 9 weakens the magnetic field of the trailing coil 8. When the direction of motion of the coils 7, 8 is reversed, adjustment means 10 is used to bring ring 9 nearer to coil 7. The ring and coils may be water-cooled. An aluminium ingot may be refined, in a graphite boat 2, in an atmosphere of argon, in a quartz tube 4. The boat 2 is supported on hollow water-cooled stainless steel rails 3 held under tension.
