Abstract

1,122,151. Crystal pulling. L'ELECTROREFRACTAIRE. 29 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec., 1964; 9 July, 1965], No. 55110/65. Heading B1S [Also in Division H5] Crystal-pulling apparatus comprises an induction furnace consisting of a hollow cylindrical member 1 which forms both a crucible for the melt and a single-turn induction coil. It is directly connected to a source of highfrequency current and also to conduits for circulation of cooling fluid. A crystal 18 of e.g. alumina, silica, magnesia is pulled from the melt by means of a rod 16 which is raised and rotated by means of a mechanism 13, 14, 15. The whole apparatus is enclosed in a vessel 19 of e.g. refractory glass into which an inert gas may be introduced. The specification refers to the preparation of a single crystal of alumina containing a small quantity of chromium.
