Abstract
816,367. Zone-refining. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Dec. 18, 1957 [Dec. 27, 1956], No. 39372/57. Class 82(1) [Also in Group III] Electrically non-insulating materials such as Fe, Mo, Ti, Zr, W, Re, Bi, Ge and Si are zone-refined by passing through an ingot of the material, an electric current of sufficient magnitude to melt the material, the amount of melting being restricted to a small zone between two cooled portions at the extremities of the ingot, and movement of the molten zone being effected by varying the degree of cooling exercised by the two portions relative to each other. As Shown, an ingot of iron 1, is held between water cooled clamps 2 and 3 which are connected to a source of current 8 by connections 10 and 11. The molten zone 13 is moved along the ingot e.g. from left to right, by increasing the rate of cooling by clamp 2 and decreasing the rate of cooling by clamp 3. Modifications of the apparatus describe (i) a heat reflector surrounding the molten zone to reduce heat losses by radiation, (ii) additional cooling coils on either side of the molten zone which move with the zone and (iii) a device for allowing expansion of the ingot during heating; the ingot may be arranged with its longitudinal axis either vertical or horizontal in which latter case the molten zone is retained in position by interaction of the electric current and a magnetic field applied in a direction at right angles to that of the current. A theoretical treatment is included by which it is possible to calculate the temperatures required at the two cooling points to produce a molten zone of a desired length at a specific point in the ingot.
