Abstract
1,212,372. Continuous casting. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 10 Nov., 1967 [12 Nov., 1966], No. 51206/67. Heading B3F. In a method of continuous casting, a flushing, purifying and/or degassing gas is blown on to the surface of the molten metal in the mould 2 from a lance 4, and the gas rising from the surface provides a protective shield for the pouring jet against the access of air. A bellows shield (6) (Fig. 2, not shown) may be provided between a delivery channel 1 and the mould 2, to retain the gas around the pouring jet before passing out through an aperture 7. There may be a reduced pressure to extract the gas. The gas may be inert or reactive and may be used as a carrier for gaseous, liquid or solid additives.
