Abstract
1,074,648. Continuous-casting processes. DORTMUND - HORDER HUTTENUNION A.G. Aug. 23, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 36062/65. Heading B3F. To obviate billet re-heating for rolling, molten metal such as steel is dispersed in a tower to fall as droplets for cooling by counterflowing gas before re-uniting to form a coherent mass (26) for compression by rolls (15, 16). The droplets may be formed by a sieve, a refractory spray, an annular nozzle in which the steel is divided up by gas, or a distribution plate, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), of general conical shape and with sectors of different radial length, on to the apex of which a jet of metal drops to flow over the plate, as a film, to its irregular perimeter. The coolant gas maybe blast furnace gas, water gas, or partly oxidized natural gas, mixtures of these with each other or mixtures of them with hydrogen and/or carbon monoxide. The metal is fed to the tower from a ladle (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), which traverses a platform (2). An annular seal (13) may be provided between the latter and the ladle.
