Abstract
1,249,854. Continuous casting machines. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 9 Jan., 1969 [23 Oct., 1967], No. 48077/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] In a process for continuously casting rimming steel, the state of oxidation of the steel 31 in the mould 11 and thus the turbulence occurring in the steel is controlled by adjusting the atmosphere above the liquid steel contained in the mould. The said atmosphere may consist of an inert gas such as argon or nitrogen with or without an oxidixing gas such as oxygen, or a gas consisting of the combustion products of a liquid or gaseous fuel. A solid deoxidant such as aluminium may be added before or while the steel enters the mould for a coarse control of the state of oxidation of the steel. The gases may be introduced through a pipe 24 or they may be jetted directly on to the molten metal surface by means of a lance or fuel burner, Fig. 4 (not shown). An observation port 22 may be provided in the hood 10 of the mould 11. The stem 34 of the tundish 20 slides in a refractory collar or metal bush 35 to allow for reciprocation of the mould. Alternatively a flexible bellows (30) may be provided between the tundish 20 and the hood 10.
