Abstract
<PICT:1100207/C6-C7/1> Molten metal particularly steel is degassed by pouring it, e.g. from a ladle 6 through a nozzle 7 or direct from a melting or refining furnace with continuous flow (not shown), as a free jet into a first vacuum chamber or compartment 4, allowing the molten metal to accumulate in the bottom of the first chamber or compartment to a height sufficient to form a hydraulic trap capable of excluding any re-entry of air into the first chamber or compartment during tapping of the degassed metal from a second casting chamber or compartment 11 e.g. through a nozzle 17 in its bottom closed by a stopper 18, and flushing an inert gas such as argon into the accumulated metal, e.g. from a blast box 10 through a porous plug 9. A casting jet protection device comprising an ejector 20 with a gas deflector 21 inside may be connected beneath the nozzle 17 by a box 22 to provide an annular inert gas jet around the casting jet during continuous casting into a mould 35 under an air-tight cover 36. De-oxidizing or alloying elements may be introduced into the vacuum chamber.
