Abstract
1,205,040. Electrostatic charging apparatus. RANK XEROX Ltd. Nov.27, 1967 [Dec.1, 1966], No.53808/67. Heading G2H. A corona discharge device for depositing a uniform negative charge on a surface comprises a corona discharge electrode 10, means to apply a negative corona generating potential to the electrode and electrostatic field generating means located on the opposite side of the electrode to the surface to decrease the divergence of the cone of negative charges produced by each emission point on the electrode. The field generating means may be a field electrode 12 connected to a potential source 16 while the electrode 10 may be a round wire or a knife edge. In operation, a negative potential 14 is applied to corona wires 10 which produces discrete glands (22) Fig.1 (not shown) A negative potential equal to or higher than that of the corona electrode is suppled to plate 12 to produce a repelling field which narrows the radial spread of electrons as indicated by the broken lines Fig.1 (not shown). The glow points (22) move closer together and eventually merge to provide a uniform charge on the insulating layer 6 Fig.2. The negative potential 14 may be of the 4-11 kilo-volts and the potential 16 between 7, 000 and 8,000 volts.
