A sole 1 for sports footwear is provided with a plurality of retaining inserts 2, a structural element 4 releasably secured in each insert 2 and a plurality of spikes 5 mounted on and projecting below each element 4. In a first embodiment (Fig. 6) the retaining insert consists of a threaded sleeve 2' having upper and lower flanges 2" and 2"' and the element holding the spikes 5 is secured by a screw 6. The spikes 5 consist of nails which are passed through holes in the element and are held in position by their heads which are clamped between the sole 1 and element. Alternatively the nails may be embedded in the element during the injection moulding of the element. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7) the spikes 5 are integral with the element 4 and are formed by making incisions around the edge of a disc and bending the tangs down to form the spikes 5. In a third embodiment (Fig. 12) the sole is provided with a recess 17, the retaining insert 2 projects into the recess 17 and the element 4 is provided with a recess into which the insert 2 fits. The element 4 has a peripheral ridge 4" which engages a groove in the sole 1. The surface of the recess 17 may be provided with radial ribs 19, the heads 5' of the spikes 5 lying between the ribs 19. In all of the embodiments the retaining screw 6 may be replaced by a large threaded spike (not shown).
