Both are very realistic sports manga. I've played both sports and have been watching both since I was little. I used to watch Captain Tsubasa as a kid. Still a banger. But both of these are extremely well-written. They explore many sides to their sport while also making a very interesting story.
Why people love slam dunk? They love it for the character, the drawing and the emotion that every match give to you , well obviously Slam dunk is the pinnacle of spokon, but all the charateristic I mention before you can find them all in Ao ashi. All the character are well written and the story and development of the player, in primis akatsu and ashito, are just really really good. And trust me the last match in Ao ashi against barcellona are gonna give to you a lot of emotion just like the last against the sannoh.
