You'd think an anime show with a highschool setting and a hilariously overpowered main character isn't gonna be all that different from all the countless others using the same tropes, but damn, this one is a breath of fresh air.
Clever, often self-referential with well thought-out humor, frequent 4th wall breaks and absolutely lovable characters and their dynamics. Very fast-paced and perfect for people with a short attention span, as each episode is divided into five mini-episodes that are easy to follow once you get used to the fast pace. The only thing I didnt find outstanding about it is the art, but that's to be
...
expected, it's a lighthearted comedy anime and art isn't really the main point.
Perfect if you want to watch something genuinely amusing that's clever but at the same time not too engaging.
10/10 from me, for sure.

This show doesn't know whether it wants to be an over-the-top, ecchi, comedic mess, or a Higurashi-esque suspense/mystery/psychological thriller.
I genuinely felt like I was watching two different shows throughout the duration of the series. The first half started out as I expected it to - tacky, messy, comedic, over-the-top with lots of innuendos and panty shots. And with a ridiculous storyline (a guy turns into a plushy dog costume that allows a girl to get inside of him and control him... because some alien dude hanging out by a vending machine mysteriously granted him that power). It was weird, it was messy, it made
...
no sense, it was tacky and over-the-top, which was exactly what I was expecting from a show with such a ridiculous premise. And it should've stayed that way.
But then it tried to be serious and boy oh boy did that fail.
The story became so messy and hard to follow that I seriously couldn't even bother with understanding it. The characters' motivations became even more unclear for me, the storytelling was done so badly that I really couldn't properly follow any of it. The introduction of some new characters from the main character's past and the whole mystery surrounding them didn't really make much sense to me. And suddenly, the main characters started acting completely different from what we were used to. You could attribute that to ~character development~, I guess, but there was none of that here. It didn't happen very organically, it felt very clear-cut and straight up bad.
Final verdict? It should've stayed as ridiculous as it started out. I was alright with the main characters and their stereotypical behaviors (meek main guy bossed around by an assertive girl), because it seemed a bit tongue-in-cheek, even. I don't appreciate the way the show suddenly started to try to take itself seriously because it only ruined things. Such a ridiculous premise doesn't really need a dEeP bAcKsToRy and mYsTerRiEs in my opinion. I mean, I guess it could've even worked, but the storytelling was just so bad and hard to follow... and judging by how the series ended, there could be a season two in the future. Oh boy am I excited for that. (not really, in case you couldn't tell)
The only good thing about this show is the soundtrack. There were some pretty amazing EBM/industrial/drum'n'bass tracks as background music that really took me by surprise and pumped me up. The ending song was pretty nice to the ears as well.
But yeah, overall.... a big ol' 3. I couldn't even give it a 4 because it just isn't even 'decent'. It's straight up bad.

After reading the plot synopsis I expected a cute, heartwarming, fantasy/magical girl kind of experience. While it IS cute and it certainly IS heartwarming, I wish it was more fantasy-driven. Sadly, the fantasy elements remain very scarce throughout the anime (which is too bad because there was great potential). What you ultimately get is a sort of dull slice-of-life/drama/comedy kind of thing.
Too much of the story revolved around that damn preschool Kobato and Fujimoto worked at. There are episodes when the viewer easily forgets that there's supposed to be a fantasy element to this story. When it DOES get pointed out, everything is so
...
vaguely explained that by the end of the story you're not even entirely sure you understood it right / what it is that ACTUALLY happened that made Kobato and Ioryogi come to Earth. Like, the actual events are never explained. Neither is Ioryogi's origin and all the different worlds that supposedly exist in the Kobato universe. (I'm doing my best not to write any spoilers here.)
The comedy is lazy and repetitive. Kobato is clumsy and/or does something stupid, Ioryogi yells at her and burns her. Wash, rinse, repeat.
There were certain moments that induced a lot of feels (the last two episodes especially!), but there were also certain moments where it either felt overly dramatic, or it fell flat and I ultimately felt nothing. So yeah. Overall, a big meh from me.
I would've given this anime an even worse rating had it not been for the overall cuteness and the good feels it occassionally brought me. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen, I just think there could've been done a lot more and there's a lot of wasted potential.
Also, Fujimoto can go suck a d*ck.

This anime is a lot more than what it seems to be at first glance. When you read the plot synopsis you might think it's full-on hentai, but it's actually nowhere near that.
It's a teenage romance comedy sprinkled with some ecchi throughout, and as the plot kept on progressing, I focused way more on the romantic/comedic parts rather than the ecchi parts.
I personally really enjoyed it because I could really relate to the main character. I was exactly the same as her when I was 15. Hormonal, lustful, thoughts going wild everyday... but completely awkward and clueless as to how to go about
...
my desires and how to express them. Also, I thought it was really refreshing to see a sex-obsessed female lead character. There's plenty of ecchi anime out there with sleazy male protagonists - seeing things from a female perspective is definitely a nice change, especially since it's so spot on (the author of the manga is female, if I'm not mistaken, so it definitely makes sense).
Anyway, don't let the plot synopsis drag you away from this anime - it's nowhere near as dirty as it sounds. Even though Yamada (the main protagonist) says she wants to eventually have 100 sexual partners, it's as clear as day she's not ready for it nor does she know how the hell to go about it. At the end of the day it's a really cute romantic comedy revolving around two inexperienced teenagers discovering themselves and coming to terms with their sexuality. It definitely had me reminiscing about my own past and realizing both me and my male interests at that time were exactly the way Yamada and Kosuda are portrayed - awkward, nervous, thoughts and fantasies running rampant, not knowing what the other thinks, being too afraid to ask, messing up... It's all part of growing up. And our two protagonists do it so well together. ♥ I really enjoyed the story, it's 10/10 for me.

Upon seeing Kimi no na wa I got told I should watch this one too since it's from the same director or something. So I went into it with high expectations only to be disappointed.
It's not particularly bad, it's just extremely mediocre, with a thin plot and little to no character development.
The relationship between the characters is portrayed in a way that can't make me sympathize with it. I expected a tear-jerker. Felt absolutely nothing while watching. If you've read the plot synopsis, then you don't even have to watch the whole thing because that's basically all there is to it. A guy
...
and a girl who are in love with each other but can't be together due to distance. Pondering whether they will see each other again. That's it. That's the whole plot.
Plus, there are a few things that rubbed me the wrong way because they completely invalidate the plot if you take them into account, for example: (WARNING: MINOR SPOILER AHEAD)
The characters seem to be living in modern day Japan. Y'know, with the modern technology and everything, why the hell are they sending each other letters every few months? There are things such as cellphones, instant messaging, the Internet... I don't know, I feel like their relationship could have had a slim chance of working out if they actually used the technology available.
(END OF MINOR SPOILER)
I feel like the creators were trying to tell a realistic story but then tweaked reality a little bit in order to make the whole thing more dramatic, and they did so pretty unsuccessfully if I do say so myself. But that's just me. Maybe someone else would have enjoyed it more. I just didn't feel anything while following the story. Didn't sympathize whatsoever.
The art is, however, outstanding. I often found myself mesmerized by the lovely scenery, the color and the crispness of it. If for nothing else, you should watch this anime for the art. I kinda feel it was made for the purpose of showing off the art anyway, since it's packed with amazing visuals which drew my attention away from the story. The music was okay, too.
Overall, it was one big mehhhh for me and that's why I rated it with a 5 (mediocre). Amazing visuals, good sound, but the story just didn't do it for me.

Okay, now that I've seen all the episodes, I can finally write a review about this extremely lovable anime, even though I've never written a review before. I am absolutely smitten with this anime.
Let me elaborate.
WARNING: THIS REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS SO PLEASE DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE ENTIRE THING.
This anime tells a love story, obviously, as the title says. Our main character is Gouda Takeo, a 2-meter tall, muscular, even a bit scary-looking high school freshman who doesn't look his age by any means. Despite his scary appearance, he's good-hearted, energetic, always willing to help out anyone in need, which earns
...
respect from his classmates and also other girls (which he is painfully unaware of). Then there's his love interest, a teeny-tiny petite shy girl named Yamato Rinko, who is really into baking cookies, helping out others in need, basically, she's just as pure-hearted as Takeo. Their love story begins when Takeo saves Yamato from a groper while on the same train. The two fall in love on first sight, although Takeo has a hard time believing she really does like him, due to his unusual appearance and girls' tendencies to dislike guys like him. Which is, frankly, so damn adorable. Takeo is not your usual anime dude. Even though he posesses superhuman strength and is adored by absolutely everyone who gets to know him, he is super modest and a little bit insecure. He also respects Yamato a great deal, going so far as having trouble calling her by her first name, being super nervous about holding her hand, promising not to even lay a finger on her until she wants him to. She, on the other hand, is embarassed by having occasional dirty thoughts about him, gets super excited about holding his hand, is amazed by his strength, always cheers for him, and so on. The contrast between the two (she's super-tiny and delicate while he's an awkward giant) is SO. DAMN. ADORABLE. Their relationship is SO. DAMN. ADORABLE. The story is SO. DAMN. ADORABLE. even though it revolves mostly around their lovey-dovey encounters ('Takeo-kun, I love you so much!', 'Aaaah, Yamato, I love you too!' and so on and so forth). It's SO FREAKING ADORABLE that I don't even give a damn about the story not being as developed as you'd expect it to be (hence why I gave it a 9 instead of a 10).
Though I must say, I really applaud the development in the latest episodes, and the small hardship the two faced (not gonna spoil it. But it's a happy ending, of course.)
STORY: 9/10
Maybe the reason why I liked this anime so freaking much is because I'm in a relationship with a guy similar to Takeo... and we're kinda like Takeo and Yamato... so it hits too hard home. Oh well. :D
ART: 10/10
The art is really crisp, the colors are nice, the backgrounds are nice, basically there's nothing to dislike. The whole thing is very fresh-looking.
SOUND: 10/10
The soundtrack isn't as offputting as you'd expect your typical shojo anime soundtrack to be. The opening song was actually really nice, I'd sit through the opening humming along to it, which is what I never ever do (when I watch anime I usually skip openings, except if I really like the song). Whoever sings the opening and ending songs did a great job, their voice is really gentle and nice, and not making me want to stab my eardrums with a fork until they bleed. Background music during the episodes is also enjoyable, there's not a single thing to complain about.
CHARACTERS: 6
While I absolutely adore Takeo and Yamato, I found myself wanting to punch the writers in the face for not showing basically any background story relating to Takeo's best friend, Sunakawa-kun. Sunakawa-kun is your typical bishounen on the outside, extremely gorgeous, but very quiet and mysterious on the inside. But we don't find out anything about why is he like that. We don't know why doesn't he pursue girls (other than disliking them for talking shit about Takeo behind his back) and why is he always so distant. He has no other significance in the anime other than being around Takeo, helping out Takeo 'n shit... everything is always revolving around Takeo. I was hoping Sunakawa-kun would find a girlfriend by the end of the series, but I ended up being disappointed. The girl who showed up as a potential love interest for him ended up being turned down for no apparent reason even though she might be a good match for him. AND WE DIDN'T EVEN GET ANY DEEPER EXPLANATION AS TO WHY WOULD HE REJECT HER, WHY IS HE ALWAYS LIKE THAT. I was so, so, so disappointed. Also, Sunakawa-kun's sister... and the guy who's interested in her (Oda-kun)... very little to no development at all. The plot revolves way too much around Takeo for my liking and doesn't give space to other characters and their development. Which made me really sad and disappointed.
ENJOYMENT/OVERALL: 10/10
Even despite the aforementioned flaws in character development, I really enjoyed this anime, as I've stated before. It's not your typical shojo anime, it's crisp, enjoyable, and it's definitely worth a shot if you want to watch something light and cheerful without any deeper story to it. For all of you out there who like adorable love stories but with a slightly different charm to it, without a lot of shojo cliches, you could really enjoy this anime. I absolutely recommend it. ^^
Hope this review was helpful enough. Cheers!
