My own Rules of the anime list:
1) If I finish at least 1 entry (or sufficiently enough episodes) of the franchise, then its directly subsequent entries (sequels, alternative versions, side stories, OVAs, specials, etc.) of the franchise will be in the “Plan to Watch” section, while other entries of the franchise (sequel of the sequel and/or other related entries) of the same franchise will be in the “On Hold” section (exception: unaired entries will be in the “Plan to Watch”).
2) Those entries which are actually “supposed” to be in the “On Hold” section will end up in the “correct” section
3) If I watched very few episodes of the first entry in the anime franchise and did not decide to “drop” it, then it ends up in the “Plan to Watch”
4) If I did not watch any episode of the anime franchise, it will not appear on my “anime list”
