Synopsis

"You're lying."

Sixteen-year-old Kanoko Urabe knows that someone is lying if she can hear the strange, echoing sound of clanging metal in their voice. As a young and overly honest child, she would point out the lies of other villagers, and was ostracized as a result. She is eventually forced to leave her hometown and tries to find a place for herself in the city of Tsukumoya in 1920s Japan.

In a chance encounter, Kanoko meets Souma Iwai, a gifted but penniless detective. After she is forced to demonstrate her ability, he expresses appreciation for what she can do and agrees to take her in, asking the girl to be his assistant. The Iwai investigation firm soon makes a name for itself helping clients by solving cases with Souma's sharp wits and Kanoko's power. In the process, Kanoko's life is enriched by the various people she encounters in her investigations.

The manga was adapted into a live-action TV series in 2024.

The three key words I would use to describe this manga - fun, gripping, heartwarming.
Usotoki Rhetoric is the charming story of a girl named Kanoko who has the ability to hear lies in the sound of people’s voices and meets Detective Iwai after starting life in a new town.

The manga is at heart a detective story, with initial chapters following a “mystery of the week” formula before progressing into longer mysteries depicted over multiple chapters. The mysteries vary greatly and I found them highly entertaining- I particularly liked the way in which Kanoko’s ability and Iwai’s sharp eye work in tandem to solve the mysteries. ...

I highly recommend this manga to anyone interested in a fun, comedic mystery - the characters are great, including the villain. The art really stands out along with the period appropriate details, and the character development is well done. There is light romance and none of the relationship drama common in the genre.

The mysteries themselves were interesting and had variety, but the main draw to me was the humor and the characters - Iwai is one of my favorite characters and he definitely steals the show.

It's unique and I finished the series in one sitting - once I started I could not put it down.

The story had a nice flow even if it was long enough (thank college for friggin delaying my reading list like seriously hate this setback 👿👿👿👿👿👿) for the 50 chapters!

Anyways it's mainly about a girl Kanoko who magically detects lies, the town she lived in turn their backs on her because of her power so she decides to move away. She then meets a guy named Souma who's basically a detective clown because he's obviously obsessed with money and food (two wonderful needs of course so he ain't wrong lol). I really liked the way they meet different people who request to help ...
