Flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta Movebo!
A critical descent into the poetic failure of Centuria.
It is no easy thing to watch a work plummet from promise into pastiche. Centuria, with its haunting opening pages: a boy, a baby, the sea, the scent of blood and salt, cast the illusion of depth. A child protecting another, 100 souls sacrificed for one, and an entity of the abyss granting life not as gift, but as curse. The signs were all there: myth, moral weight, and a world bound not by good and evil, but by consequence.
But such illusions are brittle. Centuria is a descent from Flegetonte to

I don't think this is a necessarily bad manga, but I don't think this style of series meshes well with some of the Lovecraftian themes the story initially tries to capture. The art and creature designs are beautiful and convey a sense of horror that is unfortunately missing in the narrative. This is a very light dark-fantasy, which may appeal to some, but isn't really for me. Dark themes are mostly just dabbled in, and then shied away from. It's very early on, so it still has a chance to pivot in a more interesting or different direction. At least worth a look.

It is really early to tell but it is good, it is like a tragic tale with a "lighter" tone to it, unlike something like Berserk. The series presentes a world that needs to be explored and is full of mysteriuos creatures. One really good thing it has is the art, the art is really good for it being a weekly series. Characters have a cute aspect to how they are drawn, like female characters look really cute and "bubbly". If you like tragedy filled stories with a character that has nothing to lose but hope, good drawings and mysterious plot this series is for

Its not bad, but its such a a wasted potential.
In the start it's really surprising, with the first chapters giving "The Return of Obra Dinn" vibes, the Lovecraftian horror being really well made, but...nothing can be good for to long, and even if the horror sometimes still show up a little in the story, the potential is totally lost when it become a generic battle Shounen with fights, friendship drama, superpowers, villain groups, transformations and worst, and that dont fit with the Lovecraftian theme the story started with, and worst of all, all the shonen cliche is not good, it's just a mix ... Centuria is one of those series that completely caught me off guard. I started it out of curiosity and the hype surrounding it, but it turned into something I couldn’t stop reading and binged in one day. Right now it’s sitting at only 48 chapters, but the quality and potential it shows this early on is honestly insane.
The story starts off feeling like it might be something grounded, but quickly leans into a darker, more brutal fantasy world filled with eerie monsters and strange powers. It’s not a light read. The world is harsh, unforgiving, and feels dangerous in the best way possible. There’s a ... Aug 24, 2024
Overall, Centuria so far is fantastic. It has beautiful art and an engaging story, with a lot of promise for the future. It's a high enough mark of quality that, after finishing what of it is currently out, I wished there was more because I was that engaged.
Narrative - The story is about Julian, a young boy who stows away on a slave ship, who is found by the slavers and cared for by the slaves. Very minor spoilers for the first chapter here, but when all of the slaves are killed by the slavers, a goddess of the sea appears to him and offers ... Jan 2, 2025
Centuria: A New Masterpiece You Can’t Miss
Centuria is a gripping, dark story filled with intense moments, a unique setting, and incredible creatures. What makes it stand out even more is its balance between dark themes and wholesome moments, especially its focus on family. This manga knows how to make you care deeply about its characters, which raises the stakes to a whole new level. Story: The story follows Julian, a young boy who stows away on a slave ship. He’s found by the slavers but cared for by the slaves onboard. Without spoiling too much, tragedy strikes, and a sea goddess offers Julian power. From there, his ... Feb 20, 2025
I'm actually shocked that Centuria isn't one of the most popular or praised new series right now because so far I have enjoyed every single moment in this manga. I would start off by saying that many people have compared it to Berserk or Vinland Saga but Shonen which may be true. I have watched Vinland Saga up to season 2 but haven't read the manga and have also not read Berserk so people who have read/watched those may have a different feeling for this series. It does remind me of Vinland Saga in some aspects but that's a good things as Vinland Saga is

I really enjoyed Centuria. It's still early, but this one seems promising. To give an analogy, it's like post-farming arc Thorfinn trying to live with a baby in Berserk but shounen-ized (of course, it's in Jump).
Although I mentioned Berserk, it doesn't dive deeply into the dark fantasy aspect of it, but just dabbles around. It's character designs and artwork are really good which convey the horror of the beings. Story wise, it's still early but the way it's going is interesting. Visually, the art work is good and the character design has this Lovecraftian vibe to it(I saw a kraken lady so I am saying this ... Dec 9, 2025
After hearing that the author for Centuria was previously an editor for Tatsuki Fujimoto, I quickly picked it up and eagerly dove in. The manga starts off strong, rapidly establishing the tone of the world, the MC's background and his newfound abilities, and a fresh cast of characters with interesting personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. Without missing a beat the author introduces the story's main antagonist and an inciting incident destined to bring the MC and this new villain into conflict and, sure enough, the two opposing sides come into contact and THEN... they duke it out. Chapter. After chapter. After chapter. After CHAPTER.
And this ... Aug 10, 2025
The world of Centuria is built on the existence of Lovecraftian-esque gods and powers born from blessed blood or deals with a god. The buildup of the unknown is pressed in the readers mind, with the art perfectly representing its dark themes and will make you stare at the panels with awe. The various parties involved make you question their goals and what the ultimate plan is, the potential for a deep history is incredible.
Almost all the characters have designs you would not see in other media, with their outfits drawing attention on how creative and eye catching they are (with the art ... Jun 2, 2025
At the time of this review I'm at chapter 54. Its my currently favorite ongoing newish series on Manga Fox. If I had to compare mangas to this one with similar themes I would compare it to Vineland Saga and Berserk even though those two are already similar. Its a about a run away slave and his family he chose not the one he was born with on the constant run and hide journey to find some place to live a peaceful life. It has the themes of man who was numb from life learning what emotions are, life after vengeance, choosing happiness/peace over violence

Centuria is worth considering. It's not a masterpiece, but it is unique and raw, which I find compelling. A good comparison is Helck: both have questionable drawing technic, an okay story, and poor pacing, yet are written with genuine passion.
At its core, Centuria is about "family." This is clear from the beginning when the main character is tasked with carrying a baby. The relationships he develops reflect this theme throughout. I've always disliked the shonen trope of the "rival second main who hates the MC," which is refreshingly absent here. Instead, the main cast bonds together with genuine affection, and the baby/child is central to ... Sep 24, 2024
Centuria's first few chapters seemed really promising, with it's dark atmosphere, Lovecraftian creatures, Eldritch horrors and an unforgiving world, but then characters start acting like they're in a children series, with everything being black and white, villains being comically evil and the heroes being little angels from god, mc is as naive as a toddler, characters win battles with the power of friendship and all.
Very disappointing, this is a generic shonen series trying to pretend it's mature with GORE and over rendered backgrounds, non-powered characters in full armor moving like they're weightless, even the art that felt was incredible in the first couple of chapters ... Nov 20, 2024
We have Berserk at home.
Story Centuria is a weird mix of Berserk (dark fantasy), Vinland Saga (healing from trauma), and a bit of Lovecraftian horror. Then you water it down to be less gore-y. It is an interesting attempt to blend those 3 things. The only issue I have with the reading is the pacing is horrible. Early in (chapter 1-10)a single fight feels like it is less then a chapter. Then later on (chapter 11 onwards) the plot drags on. We stay on a single event for maybe 2.5-3 chapters. Maybe don't binge read it really. IMO, If the mangaka nails down the pacing ... |
