My expectations have fallen so low with this show that, I was pleasantly surprised by the episode. (one of the advantages of low expectations)

As a connoisseur of Fine Liquor I liked the narrative about the dwarf finding the underground chamber and asking for help from Frieren to get his hands on the rumored-world's-best drink. That was intriguing enough, and the revelation that it's a terrible swill is a clever parable. Although I will say you should never, under any circumstances yank the cork from a dusty bottle housed underground and take a swig like that should go without saying, it'd probably unalive you- but the way it played out was appreciated. Good Job Frieren you have a good episode on me.

So, what is your favorite Expensive But Terrible Tasting drink?

Pretty over the top way just to say "Yeah, mine over there" Straight up used the best track on the soundtrack just to flex on the haters. Also liked that lesson with the liquor.

@GT1Studios The whole part was definitely Mad House flexing their artistry, they made it so absurdly more polished than what one would have expected reading the pages that whole segment covered lmao

Episode was fine, but I feel like it was almost rushed with so much that happened in the anime. I feel like this could be 2 episodes focusing 1 on the alcohol in the town and an other episode about the mine. Kind of disappointed this season will only have 10 episodes as I feel this alone could make it 11 even.

The first part raised an interesting point about spending your life chasing something that, in the end, doesn't live up to the hype. It’s a hell of a metaphor: so many people project goals—especially intangible ones—only to feel empty once they reach them. Maybe because it wasn't all that, the journey topped the destination, the cost was too high, or they just ran out of things to pursue. At least the episode ended on a high note, with everyone hungover from some cheap booze.

I wonder how old Stark and Fern will be by the end of the trip and if their designs will gradually change over time.

As for the second part, it was hilarious with that whole interest rate mess lol. Magic really is a fix-all; I wonder if we’ll ever live in an Arcanepunk world?

Soft bread!!!!! YATTAAAAAAAAA!!!!

I live in a zone where rum is important, so I expected that liquor to work its magic and turn out great. You’d think that being stored for hundreds of years would have helped, but sometimes, some liquors are just pure jet fuel.

Lol I laughed out loud when that bread clunked onto Stark's plate 😂😂😂 I had to pause the episode when he started talking about the sound

Great episode

I haven't complained once in this season, but I will complain now. I'm starting to get bored; every episode feels the same with the same old generic formula that this anime has been doing since episode 1. Slice of Life isn't my thing, and when I get too much Slice of Life without anything interesting to spice things up, then I get bored, so I reached my limit.

These episodes are nothing but filler in my eyes. First, we have the party finding a freaking drink that some silly dwarf spent all his life searching for. 200 years searching for a drink is stupid, period. If we are talking about some Elixir of Life or some shit that grants immortality or cures any illness, then sure, I would understand, but not a freaking alcoholic beverage. This is just fucking retarded, and I couldn't take that part of the episode seriously. This shit is something that I would expect from a Boruto filler episode, not from the 2nd-highest-rated anime in MAL.

And then we have Frieren getting disrespected as usual and being forced to mine due to some debt or whatever, again, something that I would expect from a filler episode, not from the 2nd-highest-rated anime in MAL.

The only thing that I enjoyed about this episode was the flashback with the blonde elf because it was something different and with a new character, not the same usual boring flashback from her old companions that they've been milking over and over again, because I got bored with that shit already.

The other thing I enjoyed was Madhouse flexing its muscle with Frieren finding the right location in the mines; that part was pretty nice.

As for the rest of the episode, it was boring as hell, and I'm bored. Let's move on from this pointless filler shit and start getting interesting.

In life, there are two certainties: death (which won't come for Frieren for yet a long, long while) and taxes; and oh did it come for her in the second half of the episode. Not only that, but for the first time in a while, the years since the death of Himmel the Hero finally increased from 29 to 30 years. Some time movement at last!

Friren has been pretty good about strong manning stupid things. This was a real break from that. She was put into a mine as an endentured slave. Told if she could find silver her debt would be forgiven. Given what should have been an awesome magic moment, but fell flatter than a piece of toast with jam. We learn that the entirety of this charade is because of logistics.
(We live for those few moments where Friren gets to be unapologetically cool)

Well, the story could have skipped the entire section with her being an endentured slave. And just done what they were always going to do in the first place. Sit down and talk. To quote a certain, certain someone.

Oh, no! She's a miner for 300 years! How will the story progress?

Well, it won't. Because Stark and Fern will be dead. So obviously she's getting out there.

Would this be forgivable in another story? Yes. Can we forgive this in Friren? Yes, as long they keep up last seasons excellence.

So why does this matter? Because Friren has established that its above cheap tension tricks like that. Because Friren has proved you don't need cheap tricks like that to keep us engaged.

Milliarde's inscription while false, did at least give Fass something to look forward to for 200 years. He's a respectable guy for laughing off the time he spent looking for that awful tasting drink.

Frieren's spell that she used to locate the silver was gorgeously animated. I'm glad Norm can once again supply softer bread throughout the region.

No “hype” moments or flashy fights, just lore, and still was super good. Really can feel the growing danger the further they go into the northern plateau and how the journey is progressing.

The inscription carved into the stone feels like either the pettiest act of spite ever or the result of an elf with way too much time and unresolved bitterness. It also makes me wonder if that elf is still alive somewhere. Given how long elves live, it would not even be surprising.

The idea that Frieren almost casually committed herself to the next 300 years working in the mines was hilarious, though. Luckily, the lord just wanted her help rebuilding his trading company instead. Compared to centuries underground, that almost sounds relaxing.

It can take a few episodes to get back into the feel of a season. Episode 5 hits the spot here continuing on with season 1 mid season with the quirky side quests and exploration. Pity the kick about the wine isn't that it improved with age.

Filler episode about them looking for a terrible liquor to magically make it taste good through the power of friendship. At this point the pacing is atrocious and the whole show is becoming pathetic.
