lol @ Where Back Arrow comes from, it's "Baka Yarou -> Backyarou" -> Back Arrow

OP & ED songs aired as ED and OP (interchanged) this ep.

It was really "Hatenkou" like Back Arrow's seiyuu mentioned on his Twitter.

Another Gorou Taniguchi-directed show, with mecha "genius" Kazuki Nakashima at the helm for both scriptwriting and series composition. Studio VOLN may not have any long-time experience, but hoping that this will not be a production issue.

If you need information about this, here it is:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-03-22/code-geass-helmer-goro-taniguchi-back-arrow-anime-unveils-story-characters-more-cast-and-staff-2021-date-in-video/.157799

Any song with LiSA is pure SOLID.

This show mixes different settings between both Chinese and Western elements, really giving off the Kill la Kill / Trigger vibes (though it's no closer to being that). Rakuho, Briheights with feelings for Convictions, the marks of a mecha adventure. The naked man that came from beyond the Wall, his name is Back Arrow.

NGL, this totally felt like a kids show of watching mechs, just a lil' bit mature...? If I have just one word to describe this starting episode: NONSENSICAL. Very fast storytelling pacing, argh please slow down!

Pray tell if this will be any good...for 2 cours no less.

For me it felt more like early 80s (like quick and hard cuts), especially the OST.

the power of belief or willpower is called conviction here eh and there are different conviction for each character

the OP and ED are a banger especially the OP by Lisa

the character design reminds of Star Driver a little bit

Thrust into the world of an original anime. This show has some great seiyuu and staff behind it so I thought to check it out after seeing that preview a few months back. A mix between fantasy and mecha with these two nations fighting in this enclosed world surrounded by a wall. Which sends down these gifts they each try to obtain. Sometimes with food inside, sometimes with treasure and sometimes with these band warper things which give the user a mech suit based on their personal convictions. Definitely unique, I don't think I've seen that before. We've got some eccentric characters already introduced like that general, the divinity and of course the main character Back Arrow himself. Whom burst out of the sky gift fully nude and never puts on any clothes the whole episode! Talk about an introduction, landing in this hodunk outskirts wild west type of town and surprising these villagers with his nudeness. The mecha we saw this episode all looked good. The general, Atlee and Back Arrow all had cool individual designs. Interested to see where this goes, should be fun since its an original and no one knows how it will unfold.

Damn the pacing was pretty fast, reminiscent of Kill la Kill. Got through a lot of introductions and even had a few fight scenes.

Interesting how it started with the Recca empire first, they might be going for something similar with Legend of the Galactic Heroes, where you have different factions like the Free Planets Alliance and Galactic Empire each with their own point of view characters. Even the OP for this episode only featured characters from Recca.

Kai Rhodan’s mecha is probably my favorite design so far, I like how its Chinese influenced just like the Recca empire is, it appears to be using a Guandao which is a Chinese halberd/glaive, also the fire technique it displays is also similar to another Chinese weapon the Fire Lance. Kai has a pretty cool voice, I believe this is the same guy who voiced Toriko.

The show looks good, nice cowboy and imperial China aesthetic with the character designs and beautiful backgrounds.

Arrow seems a lot like Kamina from TTGL and Galo from Promare, hopefully, he can distinguish himself as the series progresses.

Conviction seems to be the Back Arrow equivalent to TTGL’s drill, KLK’s clothing, and Promare’s Fire and Ice. Arrow apparently has no conviction, which seems to make his Mecha malleable, even in one of the PVs it looked like his Briheight was transformed into a sword for someone else to use.

Lots of humor, the scene of the kids trying to eat Arrow and the villagers selling out Arrow immediately without hesitation got a few laughs out of me, seems like it will be a fun show.

This was fine, way too many characters to introduce at once, but i hope i can get to like them. The animation is fine, but the CG is very well done. The world is also pretty interesting as it is nice to see some mecha every now and then, considering how not many anime from that genre get released nowadays. Either way, im optimistic.

Yoo that was pretty wild and I loved it. Story and concept's interesting. The mechas look pretty cool and so does the characters. Already like the three main girls, they are cute. Took a liking to both of the male protags too, Back Arrow and Bit.

So for now the biggest question is what's beyond the wall. Since this will be 24 episodes I feel like we'll get the answer somewhere in the middle and then we'll explore the world beyond the wall.

Not really feeling this. it's like Attack on titan with magical mech transformations. The comedy felt forced, the pacing wasn't good, the characters aren't that likeable, the conviction thing felt a bit cringey.
It is the best animated action show for the season so far, but definitely not up to the level of the usual mech names like Sunrise, Satelight, or Bones either but again, low goddamned bar. I'll give it another episode but I was disappointed with the direction it went when they introduced those villagers. It's earned enough for a true second look at any rate, and given how the rest of the season's opening episodes have gone so far, that ain't nothing.

Probably my favorite (non-sequel) show airing so far, though Horimiya, Kemono Jihen, SK8 and Wonder Egg Priority could take it.

The energy of the show feels refreshing, the characters are well established and the animation and framing was stylized and consistent.

Overall a really good start. I'd say it's a 8 or 9/10.

I've one word to describe this anime: Studio Trigger

But this is a compliment, not a complain. I mean, Studio Trigger is known for designing hot guys, and I love hot guys, and this show has many many hot guys I can fap for.

One complain is about the condition that people in robot will died if they lose might be too violence for me. I can sense that there'll be a lot of death from now on, even major characters, and I love being proven wrong about this.

RayReynolds already summarized it well. But I can add that it feels like a 90's story but that was written in the 90's. It's just too outdated.

And that makes things even worse! I was really looking forward to this because of that. My disappointment is huge. Maybe his formula isn't working on me anymore, or maybe since it feels like a mixture of Gurren Lagann and Shingeki no Kyojin I'd rather go rewatch those stories instead

Considering the scriptwriter for this show is a person responsible for writing one of the best and most entertaining anime I've seen in Kill la Kill (a top 5 anime and easily the best original anime by some distance), I was fairly disappointed and underwhelmed in this premiere episode in most aspects. The premise, the humor, the characters all fell flat so far, although the characters hopefully can improve in the future episodes once more information about Back Arrow is revealed and a supporting cast is properly established. A lot of this show felt corny without really being fun like a Gurren Lagann or a Kill la Kill which were so dumb with some jokes or themes but the show's cast and writing made it entertaining regardless, especially Kill la Kill. This fell a bit flat for me and for Nakashima standards, doesn't feel creative much.

I'll watch and try out whatever I want to, whether you like it or not. Just block me on the forums if I bother you so much lmao.

I'll criticize shitty CG if it's shitty, a ton of these more recent seasonal shows just love to throw in hideous low effort CG, unfortunately. Not like this show has much of anything else going on for it either, if the overall production values were stronger and if the episode didn't make me want to fall asleep, the bad CG would stand out less maybe.

Well ngl, this exceeded my expectations

+ Great Character Design
+ Great OST
+ Interesting Plot and world building
+ Mecha design is similar to Planet With/ Gatchaman Crowds which I'm fond of

- CG mecha, but could be way worse.
- A bit iffy about the characters

This has the potential to be a hit, so lets hope it doesn't disappoint.

Eh, pretty unspectacular for a mecha anime.

The CGI ror the mechs leave much to be desired and the story feels very safe and by-the-book. The world itself could end up interesting if all of the sides are fleshed out. I like the concept of convictions changing the attributes of the mechs.

It’s probably gonna be a one-off anime series so it should progress fairly quickly.

I really had a lot of fun watching this, actually, but then again for me there's nothing wrong with having a fast paced episode that throws a lot of information at the viewer. There's plenty of time to slow down and pick up some of the concepts later.

That said, I'm coming to the realization several of the people criticizing this wouldn't really like stuff such as Kill la Kill or Gurren Lagann nearly as much if the animation weren't by Gainax and TRIGGER. It's the style that really sells Nakashima's scripts for some.

RayReynolds said:

I don't think it has much in common with Attack on Titan other than the presence of a wall, but it's not even serving the same role in the story.

Comedy is always subjective. I thought it was funny enough.

Not sure why you'd make such a harsh comparison since they're too very different types of TV series (and one episode alone is absolutely not enough to judge either show anyway).

If anything, the director has been explicit in saying he doesn't want to make the same series over and over again, so opinions like this one are especially silly.

VanishingKira said:
To me this seem like it'll be a campy mess like Valvrave or Cross Ange, which can be enjoyable watches (to an extend) if not taken seriously, but can also turn out to just be bad. I'm not expecting alot from this, I don't hold Gorou Taniguchi in such high regards like others.

Cross Ange? That's an even more absurd comparison.

That show went all in with sexual exploitation and over-the-top violence.

This series isn't really attempting to shock the viewer in such a manner.

It's definitely campy, I suppose, but not in the almost cynical sense you're using the word here.

That wasn't my point. The thing is that a director will have something that stand out in their direction regardless if they want or not to make the "same series", but here there wasn't anything special or well done for me to care about him as a director

Suit yourself, although I think you'll be missing out on some really excellent parts from at least a few of his other shows by following that line of thinking.

Which is valid, on paper, but not one I share.

To be more specific, I can see the things you're blaming the director for have more to do with factors that can and should vary between each series, including their particular goals, methods, pacing choices and even the general feel/tone involved.

i guess that's where a whole life of watching shitty isekai shows where nothing happens will get you, because this episode was paced *correctly*. It introduced things and stuff actually happened without feeling boring. If anything, they could have actually cut the pointless opening narration/info dump

Ok, this seemed pretty bad.

They started to "cook" the food without even knowing what it was, what if it's something you don't cook, like fruits? The kids see a living dude coming out of that thing and jump to "eat" him, the little girl bites his ass..... ok, I guess that was necessary.

Bit seems like the guy that is supposed to be dumb-funny, but just comes off as dumb-annoying, like a pretty poor attempt at coping Sokka from Avatar (although I did laugh when his house was destroyed the second time, so I give him that).

I'm not bothered by the pacing nor the mechas being CGI, the design of Atlee's mech however, is a different story.

i'm very much looking forward to the mecha designs of this show, Atlee's was great and I laughed when it became more and more clear what kind of show this is regarding its action. it's very KLK/Gurren Lagann/Scryed where battles will be between personalities, with the mecha as more of a vehicle. which is awesome.

Also I'm hoping that the mecha will change appearance over time as characters' 'convictions' change, since the designs are simple enough to warrant that, but the show is also pretty cheap, so i won't expect too much
