Aharen-san wa Hakarenai Season 2

Ever since the quiet and timid Reina Aharen enrolled in high school, she has made new friends and even started dating her classmate Raidou. When the two begin their second year, everything seems to be going well, as they are seatmates once more.

Soon after, a transfer student named Riku Tamanaha joins their class. Unbeknownst to Reina, the outgoing and stylish girl is actually a childhood friend she separated from years ago. With Raidou's support, Reina is able to rekindle their friendship.

Although they have grown closer, Raidou and Reina still struggle to communicate due to his overactive imagination and her difficulty with expressing herself. Nevertheless, the eccentric couple continues to brighten up the lives of people around them as they enjoy each other's company to the fullest.

Not to spoil anything, but the second season of Aharen finally did the impossible which no anime has done before or since: have an incredibly good ending where every character gets a satisfying conclusion to what the writers built up throughout the entire story.

Aharen season 2 picks up right where season 1 left off and does basically the same thing. Everyone is still smile-baiting and friend-maxing. There continues to be no drama, as everyone in the show is still cool and genuinely cares about one another. Aharen and Raido's relationship gets stronger and more "esteemed" with every episode. The side characters ... get even more positive development. The main difference is now we have a new side character, "Riku Tamanaha". She does a great job being a self-insert character for those who were too scared or reclusive to get close to the more "sociable" people in class. Anime needs more gyarus as well, so it works out. The animation is also just as good if not a smidge better from season 1. Everything about this show is just cozy, pure, and wholesome, which brings out the best parts of having relationships with other people.

The only thing that isn't good in season 2 is the opening. ZUTOMAYO's musical works are almost all bangers with solid chord progressions, engaging build-ups, funky bass-lines, and emotionally invested vocals. Songs such as "STUDY ME", "TAIDADA", "Kira Killer" are straight up bops. Then there is the opening to season 2, "Warmthaholic", which is easily the worst song ZUTOMAYO produced. It feels like ZUTOMAYO listened to a few of Iyowa's songs (primarily Kyu-Kurarin) and said "yeah, I can use chaotic instrumentals in my music too" without understanding what makes Iyowa's songs coherent and fun to listen to. The vocals are sung in a high key in which the vocalist is clearly not comfortable singing in, the beat and strings are hurried and way too repetitive, and the two drops flop harder than a Manchester United soccer player. Whoever did the animation for this opening didn't help with matters either, as they couldn't even be bothered to draw a background for the character slideshow until the opening is already more than half over with. This is one of the worst anime openings of all time.

If you want more of one of the most cozy, pure, and wholesome shows of all time, but this time with the best ending in anime history, this season of Aharen is for you. Let's just pretend the opening isn't there.

PS: If it wasn't for the opening, this would be an easy 9/10.

Mixed Feelings

If you like the first season you will probably enjoy this. It's pretty much just a continuation of the first. It is nice to watch the characters grow as the story continues both as individuals and as a couple but rarely it seems they backtrack on that growth which personally annoys me.
Still this was a fine addition to the last season. Most of the jokes didn't land as well as the first season however I do like how it actually wraps up the anime with a conclusive end. Not enough shows get that treatment, usually they end on a cliffhanger never to be revisited ... again or they drag on so long that you lose interest.

You can't have your cake and eat it too; that's how I'd sum this up.

Compared to the first season, this one covers more "character" moments and story. Unfortunately, not a single one of them work. None of the characters' dialogue feels natural. None of the emotional moments felt earned (and because of that, everything just feels really forced). It's all just melodrama that would make your eyes roll. Not to mention, the complete lack of romantic tension between the main couple. It's literally just a bunch of tropes without any actual substance. This staleness applies to every other character too. The absurdist humour of the ... first season was what made this show strong, even if it didn't appeal to everyone and because there's less of that here, the show falls short.

However, I can't forget that the first season still suffered the same issues. I remember the first season suddenly ending with a romantic element even though I didn't get a hint of romantic tension between the main couple. But I brushed that off since the rest of the season was fine. Season 2 is just that, but amplify it by 10x. The first season was 90% gags and 10% shallow attempts at a story. The second season was 90% shallow attempts at a story and 10% gags. The way the characters acted were always played off for the gags rather than actual character flaws that they need to overcome (it's not like they even overcame them at all). And the thing is (for me at least), the humour worked! If this show really was all gags, and it leaned into that completely, then I'd definitely rate it higher.
