Haikyuu!! Movie: Gomisuteba no Kessen

Kenma Kozume has never considered volleyball fun or thrilling: it is merely something he is good at. But now Nekoma High School's volleyball team has qualified for the Spring Nationals and prepares to battle their long-standing rivals—Karasuno. Now, Kenma has to analyze the most confounding and resilient team and lead Nekoma to victory against them. Moreover, he will play against his friend Shouyou Hinata, Karasuno's short but incredibly proficient middle blocker.

Karasuno has never been able to beat Nekoma in practice matches. Even so, despite his usual indifference, Kenma feels a tinge of excitement at the prospect of facing Karasuno in a high-stakes official game with no do-overs. To advance to the semifinals and ultimately restore their team's former glory, Karasuno must find a way to overcome Kenma's brilliant strategy and defeat Nekoma in their own territory.

This is the movie I've been waiting for for 4 years. I'm not complaining that this movie isn't good and they didn't upped the quality of animations and perspectives, especially the POV shots were so good that it felt like I was there in the court. They did well with production. Not that I've been completely disappointed with it but yes I'm partially disappointed. Up until the 4th season the seniors of Karasuno were their back and had great character development Daichi, Asahi, Tanaka etc, now suddenly they weren't so important. The Coach, Ukai sensei, who was taking breaks in every round to motivate and ... give game plans to the players was suddenly not so important in the movie. The audience and cheer leaders who were the backbone of their morales, suddenly vanished. They definitely upped the quality in production but dropped it on the aspects which make a sports anime worth watching. My bois Tanaka and Daichi were robbed. Ukai Sensei was robbed. Screen presence of Ukai-san is equal to zero.
I enjoyed the movie and I was really on the edge at some points, but it still ain't a great movie. Normal 6-7/10.

Mixed Feelings

I will keep it short, I appreciate the deeper into characters backgrounds and thought processes in this movie and season 4. I appreciate it in the sense that I see my favourite characters lives and how that too enters the court and influences team dynamics.

What I DONT appreciate is the flashbacks during the game. It ruins the flow of the match, the tension, it loses our focus, we were holding our breaths, now it’s out. It’s killing the show. I understand there’s a lot of emotions from the characters building up to this moment, but don’t force spoon feed it. We can’t see the flashbacks ... after the game, before the game, maybe even in the breaks, but not while someone is spiking the ball. Like come on, you producers cannot be this bad.

So many animes are ruined by flashbacks. Flashbacks are only good when there’s very few of them, then they actually have impact.

This movie could have been an e-mail. If you watch Haikyuu for character development or story, I do not recommend it. If you watch Haikyuu for good volleyball animation, there is about 2 minutes of it and I do not recommend it.
What makes Haukyuu a great show is the build up of the story of the team, as well as individual character arcs, S1 has Kageyama learning to trust his team, Sugawara learning to be the back-up, Hinata learning to play volleyball in general, bringing back Asahi & Nishinoya et. S2 has Hinata developing his general skills, Karasuno climbing the mountain that is teams similar ... to them, Hinata facing off against a discount version of his idol, Tsukki trying to figure out why people love the sport, Tadashi finally getting his chance to shine, failing, grappling with it. S3 has Tsukki's evolution, Nishinoya's struggle against Ushijima, etc. S4 has a personal struggle for nearly everyone, Tanaka, Nishinoya, Kageyama, Hinata and all of their arcs get resolved in S4. Unfortunately, this movie just gives a nod "Hey remember this arc?" They kind of give Kenma an arc but it feels rushed and the payoff feels undeserved. There is one scene that has genuinely good animation, but otherwise it also essentially skips all of the volleyballl. Haikyuu is my favorite show, but this movie felt like a huge let down. Supposedly the manga version of this match is good, so maybe check that out instead, but to me this movie honestly felt like a cash grab and for that reason I do not recommend.
