Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Forty-one years ago on Planet Vegeta, home of the infamous Saiyan warrior race, King Vegeta noticed a baby named Broly whose latent power exceeded that of his own son. Believing that Broly's power would one day surpass that of his child, Vegeta, the king sends Broly to the desolate planet Vampa. Broly's father Paragus follows after him, intent on rescuing his son. However, his ship gets damaged, causing the two to spend years trapped on the barren world, unaware of the salvation that would one day come from an unlikely ally.

Years later on Earth, Gokuu Son and Prince Vegeta—believed to be the last survivors of the Saiyan race—are busy training on a remote island. But their sparring is interrupted when the appearance of their old enemy Frieza drives them to search for the last of the wish-granting Dragon Balls on a frozen continent. Once there, Frieza shows off his new allies: Paragus and the now extremely powerful Broly. A legendary battle that shakes the foundation of the world ensues as Gokuu and Vegeta face off against Broly, a warrior without equal whose rage is just waiting to be unleashed.

An idea that, at first glance, seemed completely unnecessary—but ended up becoming one of the franchise's greatest successes.

When Broly's return was announced, my initial reaction was one of distrust. After the first classic film, which is still fondly remembered today, the character's other appearances were, at the very least, questionable. The repetition of the formula, the superficiality of the script, and the lack of development made Broly almost a caricature of what he could have been. Therefore, I confess I received the news with a certain prejudice. Fortunately, I was completely wrong.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is a spectacle from beginning to end. Unlike Frieza's return, ... which was awful, Broly's return was carefully planned and very well integrated into the story. It's not just about bringing back a popular character for fan service; it's about rebuilding him, deepening him, and making him relevant within the official canon of the work.

The first point that needs to be highlighted is, without a doubt, the animation. The visual work in this film is simply impressive. The fluidity of the movements, the dynamism of the fights, and the attention to detail make the experience extremely immersive. The blend of 2D and 3D is so natural that in many moments the viewer doesn't even notice the transition. The combat scenes are intense, brutal, and choreographed with a quality that raises the standard of the franchise. It's easily one of the highest points of the animation in Dragon Ball as a whole.

Regarding the story, the film also surprises positively. The way the Saiyans are explored in depth, showing the past of Planet Vegeta, the relationship between Bardock and Goku, and especially the origin of Broly, adds layers that enrich the universe of the work. The decision to rewrite the character was extremely successful. Here, Broly ceases to be just a villain driven by shallow trauma and becomes a tragic figure, shaped by exile, loneliness, and the manipulation of his own father.

Furthermore, the script manages to fit everything very well within the timeline of Dragon Ball Super. The absence of characters like Bills, Whis, and even Bra is justified in a way that is consistent with their personalities and the narrative context. Nothing seems forced or overly convenient. The method used to make Broly canonical is admirable: he receives a plausible reason for existing, for having survived, and for not having appeared in previous arcs. In my view, the film manages to avoid plot holes and still expand the universe organically.

Another point that greatly increased my score was this new version of Broly. He is more human, more complex, and, in a way, even more interesting than his original version. His absurd strength continues to be a highlight, but now there is an emotional context that sustains this brutality. I also really liked the focus given to Vegeta. He has moments of brilliance, actively participates in combat, and demonstrates evolution in both power and maturity.

But then, why is the score 9 and not 10?

There are two points that bother me—and which are not exclusive to this film, but to Dragon Ball Super as a whole. The first issue is the almost nonexistent use of Super Saiyan 3. It might seem like a detail or even a "petty squabble," but it's not. SSJ3 is an iconic transformation, visually striking, and had enormous narrative weight in the past. However, in Super, it seems to have been practically forgotten. The fights usually start in SSJ1 and quickly jump to SSJ God or SSJ Blue, ignoring an intermediate stage that could contribute to a more coherent power progression.

The second point is Frieza's continued presence in the story. Although he works well as a character, his constant presence weakens the impact his defeat once had. His justification for remaining alive sounds too convenient, and we know that, narratively, he no longer represents the absolute threat he once was. This detracts somewhat from the dramatic weight of the work.

Even so, these negative points do not diminish the brilliance of the film as a whole. The experience is intense, exciting, and visually stunning. The narrative construction, the reinvention of Broly, and the technical quality make this film a true masterpiece within the Dragon Ball franchise.

Ultimately, it's a film that made me reconsider my initial prejudice and leave the theater completely satisfied. Considering everything it delivers, my rating remains a solid and well-deserved 9/10.

Uma ideia que, à primeira vista, parecia completamente desnecessária — mas que acabou se tornando um dos maiores acertos da franquia.

Quando anunciaram o retorno de Broly, minha reação inicial foi de desconfiança. Depois do primeiro filme clássico, que até hoje é lembrado com carinho, as outras aparições do personagem foram, no mínimo, questionáveis. A repetição da fórmula, a superficialidade do roteiro e a falta de desenvolvimento tornaram Broly quase uma caricatura do que poderia ter sido. Por isso, confesso que recebi a notícia com certo preconceito. Felizmente, eu estava completamente errado.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly é um espetáculo do início ao fim. Diferente do retorno de Freeza, que foi uma porcaria, o retorno de Broly foi cuidadosamente planejado e muito bem integrado à história. Não se trata apenas de trazer um personagem popular de volta por fan service, trata-se de reconstruí-lo, aprofundá-lo e torná-lo relevante dentro do cânone oficial da obra.

O primeiro ponto que precisa ser destacado é, sem dúvida, a animação. O trabalho visual desse filme é simplesmente impressionante. A fluidez dos movimentos, o dinamismo das lutas e o cuidado com cada detalhe tornam a experiência extremamente imersiva. A mistura entre 2D e 3D é feita de maneira tão natural que em muitos momentos o espectador sequer percebe a transição. As cenas de combate são intensas, brutais e coreografadas com uma qualidade que eleva o padrão da franquia. É facilmente um dos pontos mais altos da animação em Dragon Ball como um todo.

No que diz respeito à história, o filme também surpreende positivamente. A maneira como os Saiyajins são aprofundados, mostrando o passado do Planeta Vegeta, a relação entre Bardock e Goku e, principalmente, a origem de Broly, adiciona camadas que enriquecem o universo da obra. A decisão de reescrever o personagem foi extremamente acertada. Aqui, Broly deixa de ser apenas um vilão movido por um trauma raso e passa a ser uma figura trágica, moldada pelo exílio, pela solidão e pela manipulação do próprio pai.

Além disso, o roteiro consegue encaixar tudo muito bem dentro da linha temporal de Dragon Ball Super. A ausência de personagens como Bills, Whis e até mesmo Bra é justificada de forma coerente com suas personalidades e com o contexto narrativo. Nada parece forçado ou conveniente demais. O método utilizado para tornar Broly canônico é admirável: ele recebe uma razão plausível para existir, para ter sobrevivido e para não ter aparecido nos arcos anteriores. Ao meu ver, o filme consegue evitar furos de roteiro e ainda expandir o universo de maneira orgânica.

Outro ponto que elevou muito minha nota foi essa nova versão do Broly. Ele é mais humano, mais complexo e, de certa forma, até mais interessante do que sua versão original. Sua força absurda continua sendo um destaque, mas agora há um contexto emocional que sustenta essa brutalidade. Também gostei muito do destaque dado ao Vegeta. Ele tem momentos de brilho, participa ativamente do combate e demonstra evolução tanto em poder quanto em maturidade.

Mas então, por que a nota é 9 e não 10?

Existem dois pontos que me incomodam — e que não são exclusivos deste filme, mas de Dragon Ball Super como um todo. O primeiro é o uso quase inexistente do Super Saiyajin 3. Pode parecer detalhe ou até “birra”, mas não é. O SSJ3 é uma transformação icônica, visualmente marcante e que teve enorme peso narrativo no passado. No entanto, em Super, parece que ela foi praticamente esquecida. As lutas costumam começar no SSJ1 e rapidamente saltam para o SSJ God ou SSJ Blue, ignorando uma etapa intermediária que poderia contribuir para uma progressão de poder mais coerente.

O segundo ponto é a permanência de Freeza na história. Embora ele funcione bem como personagem , sua presença constante enfraquece o impacto que sua derrota já teve no passado. Sua justificativa para continuar vivo soa conveniente demais, e sabemos que, narrativamente, ele já não representa a ameaça absoluta que um dia foi. Isso tira um pouco do peso dramático da obra.

Ainda assim, esses pontos negativos não diminuem o brilho do filme como um todo. A experiência é intensa, emocionante e visualmente deslumbrante. A construção narrativa, a reinvenção de Broly e a qualidade técnica fazem deste longa uma verdadeira obra-prima dentro da franquia Dragon Ball.

No fim das contas, é um filme que me fez rever meu preconceito inicial e sair da sessão completamente satisfeito. Por tudo o que entrega minha nota continua sendo uma sólida e merecida 9/10.

Mixed Feelings

DBZ has a rubbish script and nothing innovative, I'm a big DBZ fan but Akira Toriyama didn't do anything innovative in this movie, this movie looked like a compilation of every DBZ movie I've seen before.

It's very ''script power'' Broly reach quintillion fighting power points just with his willpower, so if you follow this logic Broly could beat even Whis, this movie was just shit, the only one good thing was the animation

Don't get me wrong, I'm really a HUGE fan of DBZ series, and as a fan I would like the Author to have the least bit of empathy and not do the same ... story line EVER in every movie

coming back to this years later to say this movie is pretty shit. this style of fireworks lightshow action doesnt work well for dragon ball at all, not to mention it ruins broly's character by turning him into a "goodest boy" fanfiction pet dog.

broly from Z was way cooler. before he transformed he was a creep who walked around in a constant trance, and after he transformed he took on all the Z fighters at the same time without flinching and killed his own father. he felt like legitimate threat.

broly in this movie? the guys take turns fighting him and let frieza get knocked ... around for a bit while they learn how to fuse. doesn't feel like a real threat.

and the biggest offense: the backgrounds. the Z movies were so great bc we got to see our favourite characters doing action over cool backgrounds and in cool settings, something we didn't get to see in the show or manga bc toriyama was an admittedly lazy mangaka who didn't like to draw backgrounds. so in Z broly, we get to see our heroes all get the fucking shit beat out of them on a desolate world, getting smashed through hollow architecture, making a mockery out of this long dead civilization. our titanic heroes feel the way they always should've felt: like human-sized kaiju.

super broly takes place in a fucking cg ice field. it doesn't even necessarily look bad all the time, it's just uninspired. it takes too much uncritical influence from toriyama. i like the fact that broly becomes a good guy at the end but it would've been way more interesting if he maintained that creepyass personality he was born with in the Z movie.

also, the ruination of bardock's character at the beginning was horrifying to see. i love toriyama but it's true that some of the best stuff from dbz wasn't even made by him.

edit: also, turning broly into a generic angry guy is boring. his anger was once tempered by his love for violence. he was smiling as he manhandled our beloved heroes. he felt like a genuine threat. you couldn't just take turns on him. you had to rush him all at once and even still he would demolish you. this new guy is just angry the whole time and doesn't even say words, and we have the luxury of siccing frieza on him while we learn how to dance
