Akame ga Kill!

Night Raid is the covert assassination branch of the Revolutionary Army, an uprising assembled to overthrow Prime Minister Honest, whose avarice and greed for power has led him to take advantage of the child emperor's inexperience. Without a strong and benevolent leader, the rest of the nation is left to drown in poverty, strife, and ruin. Though the Night Raid members are all experienced killers, they understand that taking lives is far from commendable and that they will likely face retribution as they mercilessly eliminate anyone who stands in the revolution's way.

This merry band of assassins' newest member is Tatsumi, a naïve boy from a remote village who had embarked on a journey to help his impoverished hometown and was won over by not only Night Raid's ideals, but also their resolve. Akame ga Kill! follows Tatsumi as he fights the Empire and comes face-to-face with powerful weapons, enemy assassins, challenges to his own morals and values, and ultimately, what it truly means to be an assassin with a cause.

First, it should be noted that 24 episodes is extremely short for such a rich plot. In fact, while watching it, one gets the impression that it is part of a longer screen version with over 100 episodes. This partially justifies the lack of detail about the king, the minister, the kingdom, and the world in general; the insufficient screen time for most of the characters; the lack of information about the protagonists'/heroes' pasts; and the unnecessarily fast plot twists. However, this does not excuse the illogical scripted moments that make no sense in this adaptation, nor the hastily reduced plot that ends too quickly. ... So, what about mc-kun? He should have been prepared and strong from working as a blacksmith before coming to the Empire. Without any training, he should have been able to kill elite fighters and, later, the strongest fighters of the Empire because he is a teenage hero and can do everything! It's clumsy and sad from the beginning of the series. The commander's love for the main teenage hero is a complete facepalm.

And yet, I liked the violent deaths of the characters throughout the anime, as well as the gray morality, which blurs the lines between right and wrong, friend and enemy, and good and evil. I also liked the actual fights and everything connected with them. Both endings satisfied me. The studio's ending was quite predictable, but the author's ending (I haven't read the manga) was more original and had the potential for a sequel.

Mixed Feelings

This show is one of the weirdest ones in the anime community. So many people praise it as amazing but it honestly is kind of a weird pervy anime in disguise as something deeper. People talk a lot about this series being dark and realistic because no one is "safe" but that really just makes a hollow story with surface level characters and an unsatisfying ending. Also the world in this story is so bland and one dimensional where the good guys are good and the bad guys are cartoonishly bad to the point of the main group of assassins would never kill anyone without ... good reason so why even call them assassins? The few positive things I would say are that the fights can be pretty cool, the weapons are interesting, and if you do like looking at hot characters this is a good series for you. I wouldn't say its not entirely unenjoyable as I like watching bad series a lot but its definitely not good in a critical sense but can be a fun turn your brain off goofy time.

I originally made this review and score for the manga, but it was actually the anime that I watched.

Plot: Akame ga Kill is basically about a boy from a small village, Tatsumi, wanting to work for the capital in order to send money back to his village. His dreams are crushed when he realizes that the empire is corrupt. He joins up with Night Raid, a revolutionary army of assassins designed to fight against the empire, in hopes to getting rid of that corruption.

The Good: not much is good about this tbh, but it had a few good things. I liked the idea of ... imperial arms, that was good. Great animation and arm. The music was good.

The bad: Art and music was wasted on this crap. Seriously, they gave this crap good animation but actual good manga are struggling to get halfway decent anime...

For one, the pacing was bad. It's such a basic story about overthrowing the corrupt government of rich assholes, and they still manage to fuck it up. It's hard to really care about the characters because you barely even get a chance to know them. The characters themselves were cardboard cutouts of various stereotypes. You have the average protagonist guy, the cold assassin, the tsundere, the leader person, the wild big breasted fighter girl, the wild older bro type, the clumsy smart girl with glasses, and the perverted comedic guy. At least, I think the guy with the green hair was supposed to be the funny pervert stereotype; they didn't flesh him out enough. Let that sink in -they didn't flesh out a character enough for him to be a STEREOTYPE. Main villain was trash.

Tone/Genre: Aside from the one-dimensional characters, the tone and genre is off. This anime doesn't know what it wants to be. Does it want to be a dark fantasy? A comedy and action anime? A romantic comedy? A harem? Pick a genre and stick to it! For example: the main character's friends died, and a few seconds later we have slapstick of him joining the rebellion group. By the way, what I just wrote sounds like a major spoiler, but it's in episode one...
