Seven Years War return - Prussia's Glory

A recent acquisition is Prussia's Glory Rossbach and Luther 1757 by Christopher Duffy has focussed my attention on the Seven Years War. I've had a stockpile of 18mm Seven Years War figures from Eureka and Blue Moon languishing for years, additions to the lead pile have been made periodically, but with no overall plan finalised. I have to confess I'm not a planner, more of an impulse buyer. I've also been internally debating base sizes, as this will dictate to a degree unit sizes. Options under review have been 40mm frontage with 8 figures to a base or 30mm frontage with 6 figures to a base for foot. Cavalry units will be either 12 or 8 figures strong. In an ideal world the 40mm frontage would win, but I have had to be realistic and take into consideration a number of important factors, most notably cost and table size. I'm currently restricted to a maximum 6ft x 4ft table, and games need to conform to this reality. Larger games may be possible but will not be the norm. There is added bonus that less figures per unit means the armies will be game ready sooner. So, at the moment I'm leaning towards 30mm as a frontage per base. Artillery will have to be on 40mm frontage as I've mocked some up on a 30mm base and don't like the cramped look. Rules will be Maurice, and I don't feel having the artillery on a different frontage will matter as long as all armies are based the same. The armies that I'll be building are Prussian, Austrian and Russian.

I still intend to continue with the Bronze Age project, and will work these in alongside the Seven Years War and other projects I've started in 15mm, Late Rome and her enemies and the Italian Wars. In fact I've nearly finished my first starter army for Furioso, the French.

Some exciting news, well for me. I'll be attending The Other Partizan this Sunday, the first post covid outing. I'm really looking forward to seeing the great games on display and maybe making a few purchases.

French Indian War

I've found my French Indian War project started many years ago and abandoned. They were intended for use with Muskets and Tomahawks, but only the French forces were started. I've a similar number of British and an Indian war party to paint as well which can be used on their own or added to the French or British as allies. I also found the buildings that I'd started work on, these need a little work to finish off but are pretty near complete.

The figures are 28mm Crusader Miniatures. This small force gives 2 groups of 12 line and one group of 10 Grenadier.

AWI British infantry skirmishing

Been a while since my last post, I return with something new and hopefully something improved. The new is the beginning of rebuilding my AWI collection. I was initially going to start with the Royal Welch but I had these six figures already undercoated sitting on the side, so they are first up. The figures are 28mm Perry Miniatures British infantry skirmishing.

The something improved is with reference to my new light box. Finally conceding defeat to the fading winter light I have invested in a basic light box. I'm hoping that this gives me the freedom to take photos when I have spare time available rather than leave it to chance; as well as improving my photographs. At least my light will be consistent, even if my photographic skills aren't!

Prussian Fusilier Regt No.40

It's been a while since I've posted an update on my Seven Years War progress, which given everything that has been happening has decidedly slowed. Still I do have another regiment to share, this time the Prussian Fusilier Regiment number 40. The figures are 28mm Front Rank and the flags are from GMB Design.

WSS Prussian Generals

Some WSS Prussian Officers/Generals, 28mm figures from Ebor Miniatures.

This little addition enables my Prussian units to be fielded as a fighting force in their own right. I've lots of painting to catch up on with the WSS armies, and am determined to make a start on the Dutch next week.

The indoctrination of the younger generation is coming along at a healthy pace, both love playing Dead Mans Hand, and are keen to try other games. I think we'll try out a little ACW game with Bonnie Blue Flag rules, nothing big just 4 infantry units and some artillery a side and see what they think. Things are also looking up on the regular gaming front as plans are in progress to start a local gaming club, all we need is numbers, then we can determine a suitable venue, but early signs are promising.

WSS Prussian Artillery

Some artillery for my WSS Prussian force. These figures are 28mm Ebor Miniatures (the guns are supplied by Warfare Miniatures, and very nice they are too).

At the rear of the artillery bases can be seen some individually based crew; these will be used (with some support) to man separate guns (once painted) that can be placed in fortifications.

The next WSS figures will be more French and then a start on the Dutch contingent.
