Hours after leaving the hospital, his wounded hands wrapped in blue bandages, Chabad Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who survived the Poway synagogue shooting, steeled himself to face the national media and delivered an emotional account of the attack.
In the days following the shooting, the whole of America empathised with the Rabbi, he ticked all the right boxes: a Jew, a victim, a survivor. The American President invited him to the White House, CNN let him speak his mind, the UN General Assembly offered the rabbi a platform so he could moan about the history of Jewish suffering. The Rabbi didn’t miss an opportunity to shout: “Am Yisrael Chai, the nation of Israel is alive, do not fear and do not falter, Because God is protecting us and we will survive, we will grow and get stronger and stronger…” The Rabbi was correct, the nation of Israel is alive and kicking, but his message was hardly universal or inclusive.
Our Chabad rebbe didn’t manage to maintain his reputation for long. This week most American news outlets reported that the “Rabbi Shot in Poway Synagogue Attack pleaded guilty to federal charges of elaborate tax and wire fraud involving fake “donations” to the Chabad of Poway.”
Rabbi Goldstein pleaded guilty to a scheme involving the misuse of at least $6.2 million in contributions and donations to the synagogue. Of those millions, Goldstein admitted to keeping approximately $620,000 for himself.
The details of his fraudulent operation are alarming: Robert Brewer, United States Attorney for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, held a news briefing Tuesday in San Diego to detail what he called “an elaborate, long-term scheme” by Goldstein that “involved careful planning, attention to detail and significant deception all to give the appearance of legitimate donations to the Chabad and lawful deductions.”
The Jewish community leader wasn’t a lone operator. Goldstein pleaded guilty to his role in a scheme where donors (as many as 18 found so far), made large contributions to Chabad of Poway, but then secretly got most of their money back. Typically, Goldstein would keep a portion of the contribution — 10% — then funnel the rest of the funds back to the donor.
The LA Times reports that “with help from an unnamed office administrator at the synagogue and others, Goldstein would generate charitable giving receipts on Chabad letterhead acknowledging the donors’ “generous tax deductible donation,” according to the court document.” So someone who donated $100 would receive in return $90 and a receipt for a charitable donation of $100. The missing $10 went to the rabbi.
According to US Attorney Brewer, the investigation into Goldstein’s alleged tax fraud began in November 2016. The rabbi knew he was under federal investigation long before the Chabad of Poway shooting and, according to Brewer, had been preparing to plead guilty to tax and wire fraud since late 2018.
The federal documents reveal that agents with the IRS and the FBI executed search warrants at Goldstein’s home and the synagogue on Oct. 17, 2018 – six months before the synagogue attack. This means that when Rabbi Goldstein was invited to the White House and the UN General Assembly and was presented as an ‘American hero,’ he was already suspected of a tax fraud operation. The FBI and the IRS suspected that the Chabad rabbi wasn’t exactly a righteous man. More troubling is the acknowledgment that when the Rabbi addressed the American people from a White House podium he already knew that he was suspected of stealing taxpayer money.
America gives Israel about 4 billion dollars of its taxpayers’ money year after year. The actions of Zionist rabbi together with some members of his congregation in defrauding the US tax authorities and stealing money from the state that scarifies its future and its young soldiers for Israel are really unthoughtful.
But there is also good news here. Not many American news outlets failed to point at the ‘victim’ rabbi who fraudulently pocketed American taxpayers’ money. Maybe America’s tolerance is wearing out.

The shooter was just a kid really, 19 years old, had five siblings, a Mom and Dad, apparently from a good Christian family.

I want to know what the Mom and Dad think, why they didn’t notice something going on with their child, was there a history of mental illness, or what could have happened within the family to have caused this.

The woman who got shot and killed was apparently an administrator, and she courageously got in front of Rabbi Goldstein and took the bullet for him, or so the story goes. Was she the helpful administrator?

This sort of financial fraud has been going on for decades (and I mean decades).
The first time I heard about it was in the late 1980s when the famed rock promoter Bill Graham was accused by the US government of using Chabad to conceal and launder a significant amount of his rock concert receipts.
The government went after Graham for being involved in tax evasion but its efforts were greatly hindered when the warehouse that contained all of Graham’s financial records mysteriously burned down. (Neo-nazis were, of course, blamed)

I think what’s more accurate is not that such behavior is a religious duty in Judaism as that there are no stringent prohibitions against it, and as a result, it becomes possible for the lesser morally exalted among Jews to rationalize such behavior.
One could contrast it with — say — the prohibitions against complete intolerance of Judaism and Christianity in Islam. The result has not been unending sweetness and light, but it has proven possible for Jewish and Christian communities to survive for over a millennium in Muslim-dominated societies — a claim the equivalent of which neither Jews nor Christians can make.
A prohibition against x at least makes it less likely to occur. A lack of any such clear prohibition — and even the odd suggestion that it’s quite alright to commit x — makes it more likely to occur.
I think we can argue that as a universal religion, or even as the religion of a dominant group, Judaism has some obvious flaws. It doesn’t follow that we need to see all Jews as necessarily bent on evil.

Racoons are absolutely ferocious under certain circumstances. I once went up against a 25+lb female with a hockey stick and quickly left to hide in the basement from her. She was destroying the garbage can but had young ones nearby.
Anyways, they are extremely territorial in the sense that they will do the same route in an area once they know they can get food. It really is all about food with racoons. They have gotten very used to humans and usually live very close by in parks or ravines in major cities.

Just as with any faith, what aspects of Judaism are most emphasized depends on the practitioner, but Judaism permits a belief in an inherent racial superiority for the practitioners that simply finds no support in Christianity or Islam. I can be a pious Muslim or Christian, and think that I am better for having realized the truth — but anyone can join me. Indeed, it’s explicitly made absurdly easy to join me. After that there arose a new sect which combined the two methods, namely, conquest and controversy, into one, because it believed that this procedure would be more effective in wiping out every trace of the Jewish nation and religion. It, therefore, resolved to lay claim to prophecy and to found a new faith, contrary to our Divine religion, and to contend that it was equally God-given. Thereby it hoped to raise doubts and to create confusion, since one is opposed to the other and both supposedly emanate from a Divine source, which would lead to the destruction of both religions. If one wants to indulge such supposition, note that Flavius Josephus was a zealot revolutionary who surrendered and served both Vespasian and Titus, both of whom are even today reviled by the Jews almost as much as Jesus Himself is reviled. Josephus served the men who destroyed the Temple and dispersed the Jews, the men responsible for inflicting God’s punishment on the Synagogue of Satan. The doubts cast on the testimonium flavianus remind me of the Protestants who, without anything but their own itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3) and fevered imaginings two millennia after the events, think they are in a position to cast doubt on the teachings conveyed by the Apostles, Disciples, and Early Fathers.

Chrıstopher Marlowe, according to an informer’s report into his “blasphemous” opinions in 1593 that had him summoned before the English Privy Council and may have led to him being murdered, is rather interesting in this regard. Marlowe seems not to have been bidding for conversion to Judaism, however, describing Moses as a “juggler” who had the Jews wander in the wilderness for 40 years so that knowledge of who he originally was would be forgotten.
Jews had no official presence in England at all in 1593, but there was clearly awareness among Christians that in dark corners at least they were not very flattering about Christ.
