He Brings Home Six Figures A Month

For the past few years I've been collecting the 1/12 scale D&D figures that Hasbro has been releasing. I ordered the Drizzt and Guenwyvar from Hasbro directly, but all of the others have been picked up at different Ollie's Bargain Outlets. I have about half of the line and once I start working again will start grabbing the rest of the figures.

Holga Kilgore, Diana, Drizzt Do'Urden and Guenwyvar, Simon Aumar, Doric (in owlbear form), Hank, Uni and Bobby
Displacer Beast, the Xanathar and Sylgar, Forge Fitzwilliams.

Music Monday - The Wizard of Waterdeep

At the beginning of the year I mentioned I was going to share Jonathon Young’s hardcore BG3 tracks. Because of things I don’t want to go into, I’m just now sharing the second track.

This song is a tribute to the arrogant mage, Gale. I didn’t use him much my first play through, but I am my second. While his pride can make him insufferable at times, the is much more to the character.

More Big Bads - Magda and King Blrrk

Today I'm going to talk about two more Big Bads from Hit Point Press. Unlike my last post, these pdfs aren't free (though they are only 2.99).

Magda is a tragic sorceress. Distrusted from a young age by everyone but her beloved sister because of her power. She trained in magic and would have been a hero if not for an unexpected attack on her village. During the attack her sister was killed saving her. Magda unleashed her power and destroyed everything. She was called to a tome called the Red Rune. This relic was rumored to have belonged to a lost goddess. The truth is is is connected to a lich, who now manipulates the broken Magda for its own goals. Magda is a powerful sorceress at Challenge 8. The pdf also includes adventure hooks, roleplaying tips, traits, and tactics for her.

Magda can be added to any setting. If I were using her in the Forgotten Realms, I'd connect the Red Rune to the Red Wizards, though that's probably a little too on the nose.

King Blrrk is a gelatinous cube that accidentally engulfed the Gem of Whirling Cosmic thought, a magic item that granted it an Intelligence score of 20. With his new found intelligence he left the dungeon for the safety of the city and set himself up as a crime boss. He protects his own and rewards them with magic items (because of his fear of them). He is served by chef assassins. He sometimes tears of chunks of himself, which are functionally one time use magic items. The pdf includes a discussion of his lair (with lair actions), roleplaying tips and traits. Blrrk is a impressive Challenge 12.

This is the kind of weird I love. I already know how I want to use King Blrrk. Next time I try to run Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, I will introduce Blrrk as an up and coming crime boss that comes from Undermountain. He tried to set up in Skullport but was attacked by the forces of the Xanathar. He survived and fled closer to the surface where he started his new organization.

Yes I want a Gelatinous Cube vs. Beholder gang war in my game. Xanathar is insane, while Blrrk is calculated. I think it would be fun. Also one of his adventure hooks involves him wanting to buy a business that party owns or frequents. This could very well be their renovated tavern in Trollskull Alley.

If this ever happens I will use my Gelatinous Cube Die from Severed Books as my King Blrrk mini.

More Big Bads - Zara Harlowe, Pork, and Bean

Last year I posted about Hit Point Press Big Bad Booklet Patreon. It gave an overview and discussed the two big bads I had, Daniel the flesh golem and the Conqueror Worm. The big bads and magic items from the patreon were collected into two books. However, you can also snag the individual pdfs. Today I'm going to talk about two Big Bad pdfs that are available for free (at least at the time of this post).

Pork & Bean are an odd pair. Bean is a raging goblin berserker and Pork is a subtle bugbear assassin. Originally enemies, the pair was struck by lightning and became bound to each other. They subconsciously know each others moves. While they bicker and would never admit it, the two are deadly together and rely on each other. The currently work as murderers for hire. Tactics, traits, and roleplaying tips are included. We also get three adventure hooks. The pdf includes stats for Bean's magical shackles and Pork's magical bracers. Pork is a Challenge 8 bugbear assassin and Bean is a challenge 6 goblin berserker. They are quite dangerous together and get a total of 5 Legendary Team Actions when within 60 feet of one another.

They can be thrown in to virtually any setting. Personally I could see them being hired by one of the masterminds from Waterdeep: Dragon Heist to take out the party (or get revenge on them).

Zara Harlowe is a truly frustrating villain. By day she is the highly successful chief of the city guard. She's taken out several organizations and operations. She is greatly respected by the nobility and has celebrity status among the common folk. However, at night she is Nix, the head of the most successful criminal organization. Her day job allows her to have a monopoly on crime. Overall the guild doesn't do things quite as brutally as before, so she justifies her actions. Halowe is a Challenge 5 roguish foe. We also get stats for her muscle Holly, a Challenge 4 blue dragonborn wereboar, and Hock, a Challenge 5 half-elf necromancer. The trio are challenge 10 when together or Challenge 11 when together and in one of the two lairs mentioned in the pdf. We get roleplaying tips, traits, and tactics for the trio.

I think the best way to use Harlowe would be to have her as an ally of the party. Build up the relationship before the big reveal. Like Pork and Beans, she fits into most settings, but I think she'd be a great addition to Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. If you go this route, I would make Nix the leader of the Zhentarim opposed to the Manshoon. If you go this route, she definitely has her eyes set on capturing the Black Viper.

Big Eye Chungus Review

Full confession: I love *redacted*. They are one of my favorite monsters. They are powerful, flavorful, and creepy. My favorite is definitely the Xanathar. I don't think *redacted* get enough love. Then again one of the big reasons is because *redacted* are not open content and are part of WotC's IP. This means publishers can't really be show their creativity with *redacted*.

That's why Planet X Games newest Kickstarter Big Eye Chungus is so great. These spherical ocular tyrants definitely aren't *redacted* and are ready to be dropped into your magic elf games.

 Here's a sample page:

If you're a regular hear at the Halls, you know that I absolutely adore Levi's writing style (and if we're going to be real, I adore Levi too). My man was cool enough to let me take a look at the pdf. A review wasn't requested, but it's such good stuff that I'm doing one.

Let's start with the name. Big Eye Chungus is absolutely ridiculous and I love it. Big Chungus was a meme I didn't get, but still enjoyed. Then again, maybe the best memes just need to be enjoyed and not understood. In its current form Big Eye Chungus is a 24 page pdf written by Levi Combs, with contributions form Cheese Haasselberger, Casey Christofferson, and Lawrence Hernandez.

The first three give an overview of the Chungus. We are given the lowdown, why they are badass (and they definitely are), and why they are dicks (mentioned above). We are then hit with variations of the big eye chungus. Speaking with Levi, the number could be increased, but these are the big eye chunges presented. There are stats given by they are pretty neutral OSR style (which means you can use this shit with little modification for pretty much any version of D&D).
  • Void Chungus - What happens when an eye tyrant combines with a Sphere of Annihilation? That question no one ever wanted to ask is the void chungus.
  • Nether Chungus - You got your lower planes in my big eye chungus. Well you got your big eye chungus in my lower plane.
  • Hive-Mind Chungus - This is a swarm of gazer size chunges that have banded together to make chungus swarm.
  • Chungus of the Waste - Possibly a singular big eye chungus, the Chungus of the Waste is a larger than normal and horrifying big eye chungus found (thankfully) only in the most desolate wastes.
  • Gas Spores - Not a true big eye chungus, adventures have been dealing with these creatures since the early days of the game.
  • Ioun Chungus - Hailing from a distance crystalline dimension, these big eye chunguses don't have eyestalks, but rather have Eye-oon stones that float around them. Yeah I hate myself for that joke too.
  • Blind Albino Chungus - No one is sure where this destructive variation came from, but they are feared for the carnage they can cause.
  • The Great Chungus - No stats are given for this planet-sized big eye chungus (which may or may not exist). Think Mogo or Ego... but more big eye chungus-like. *shudder*
  • Death Chungus - Undead variations of the big eye chungus exist and are hated by other chunguses.
  • Clockwork Chungus - a singular creation this big eye chungus feels like a modron-big eye chungus hybrid.
After the variations two pages are given to big eye chungus lairs. As hyper-intelligent abominations, these lairs should be deadly to even the best prepared party. There's also a selection of things found in their lairs (with illustrations). To make sure you big eye chungus encounters are formidable, a page of tactics is given. This is followed by a selection of "10 Impolite and Downright Rude Things a Big Eye Chungus Would Say Before It Kills (or Enslaves... or Petrifies...) You." This is *chef's kiss*. Seriously, things like this make me love Planet X Games content as much as I do. Content-wise the big ends with six big eye chungus adventure seeds. These are entertaining, brilliant, and often open ended.

The book ends with OGL and one of the phenomenal faux comic book ads that Planet X has made a part of their products. Again it's little things like that that are as the kids say.... dope as fuck. Okay maybe that's what I say and not the kids, but I digress.

If you like D&D in any of its variations, you really need to back Big Eye Chungus. I promise, you will not be disappointed. I know personally I'm going to take the content presented and use it in the Spelljammer game I plan on running to beef up the *redacted*. I might also use some of these ideas next time I use the Xanathar and Waterdeep.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 5

Today's character is my attempt at making a luchador in 5e.  You can see the character sheet here

Angel Corredor is the son of an Amnian mercenary and a Maztican priestess. From a young age, Angel used his strength and drive to protect those that can't protect themselves. He trained himself in a new fighting style that had its roots in an ancient sport of his people. As a part of this ritualistic combat, he created a mask and costume, referring to himself as Incendio. He's recently ventured to the Sword Coast and is currently living in Waterdeep. As Angel, he is a simple laborer and member of the Dockworker's Guild. As Incedendio, he is a masked vigilante that protects the innocent and punishes the wicked.

#RPGaDay2021 - Day 17

Day 17 is a trap!

Traps are funny to me. I know they are an iconic part of dungeon delving, but when I design things, I almost never think to include them. If you are playing in a game I'm running and there is a trap, it's probably because I'm running a module. It's not that I don't like traps, I'm just not a rogue and constantly alert for them.

That being said, as I've got older I've become a fan of the ridiculousness that is Grimtooth and his traps. He's just a fun, ridiculously overpowered character. I still think making him the new landlord of Undermountain would be fun as hell.

Character Creation Challenge - Day 18

Today's character was created for D&D 5e, using their D&D Beyond tools.

--------

Sam Whoreson feels his surname bears no dishonor. The son of a Waterdhavian brothel owner, the young man faithfully serves the goddess of trade and coin, Waukeen, while also using his resources to aid his community. Unlike other clerics of his faith, he tends to associate and serve those often shunned and looked down up.

Currently based out of Trollskull Alley, Sam has been known to serve as a mercenary healer. Despite the mercantile nature on healing, those in need they can still receive aid from him, in exchange for information and favors.

The Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride and WotC

Jungle Tomb of the Mummy Bride is an outstanding adventure and one of my favorite 5e releases. I decided to take the adventure and discuss how to use it with the three established 5e D&D settings I know best.

Eberron
There’s really no question about the best spot in Eberron for this adventure. The mysterious continent of Xen’Drik has numerous ruins dotting its immense jungle. The Mummy Bride and cannibals make perfect antagonists for the pulpy adventures there. I would change the humanoids to drow, since they are the primary inhabitants of Xen’Drik (other than giants). While the drow there aren’t typical evil drow, there could easily be decadent tribes among the race.  Give the cannibals the following adjustments:

Fey Ancestry: advantage on saves vs. charm, immunity to sleep magic

Innate Spellcasting (spell save DC 11)
At Will: Dancing Lights
1/day each: Faeire Fire, Darkness

Sunlight Sensitivity
In the sunlight, drow have disadvantage on attack rolls and Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. Note: The dense jungle protects them from this most of the time.

Adventure Hooks

  • The party’s ship or airship has been grounded near the tomb. Hearing rumors, they believe there is magic there that can help them repair it and go home.
  • The University of Wynarn or Morgrave University send the party as part of an expedition to a newly discovered elven ruin.
  • A member of a Dragonmarked house has gone missing  exploring Xen’drik and his family want him found.

Forgotten Realms
Honestly, the adventure can be used with little change in the Realms. The obvious place to place the jungle temple is Chult. It could be a location you add to Tomb of Annihilation. The setting already has undead and dinosaurs. However, if you want something a little different, I’d place it in far off Maztica. I got a Central and South American vibe from Jungle Tomb and Maztica is the Forgotten Realms equivalent of those places. It also makes the place more mysterious.

Adventure Hooks
  • The party are friends with Volo. They hear news that he’s gone missing and the last time anyone heard from him he mentioned exploring a lost pyramid. This plot hook works really well if you’re running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.
  • Something is disrupting trade with Port Nyanzaru and the Merchant Princes hire the party to investigate.
  • The party is payed handsomely to be a part of an Amnian merchant’s trade expedition to fabled Maztica.

Exandria
In the Critical Role world, the jungle is based placed on a large island in the Lucidian Ocean between Tal’Dorei and Wildemount. This makes it accessible to both campaign books set in Exandria. I think I would put it somewhere not too far from the Menagerie Coast, but still a distance from trade routes. The dark gods and spirits the Mummy Bride is bound to could be betrayer gods (such as Zehir, Torog,  Vecna, or Tharizdun) or lesser idols like the Arms of the Betrayers, Ceratos, Desirat, or Uk’otoa).

Adventure Hooks
  • The Revelry - One of the Plank King’s favorite captains has gone missing and he offers a reward for their return. Not only does the party have to deal with the jungle and it’s dangers, but they also have to deal with rival pirates.
  • Clovis Concord - Rumors of the jungle riches have reached a powerful merchant. They hire the party to investigate and offer them a percentage of the find.
  • Kryn Dynasty - Bright Queen Leylas Kryn has had a vision of the Luxon in a distant tropical island. With her forces at war with the Dwendalian Empire, she sends the party to investigate.

If you want the pdf of the adventure you can snag it from DriveThruRPG. If you want a print copy, you can message the Planet X Games Facebook page and ask if they have any left.

Minsc the Mighty

I love Minsc. He's was my favorite party member in the Baldur's Gate games and is my favorite D&D hero. Looking for things on the web today, I found these two images from WotC. The first is a sample from D&D Young Adventurer's Guide: Warriors & Weapons. The second is from Dragon Plus.

The images have been hyperlinked, so click them for larger versions. I made a double sided print and now I have a really cool guest character added to my D&D binder.

The Honorable Knight

I'm not currently running any games in Waterdeep. I don't need a colossal statue miniature. However, I want this beautiful thing. A premium figure from Wizkids: Icons of the Realms, this miniature is the Honorable Knight, walking statue of Watereep. The "miniature" is 11 inches tall and comes in two pieces. The retail price is 59.99. You can find more info about it here.

Grimtooth's Guide to Undermountain?

Last night while playing Lords of Waterdeep and talking about the city with friends, I had a fun idea. What if Grimtooth the Troll made his way to the Realms? Halaster used Undermountain for experimentation and things.  The troll would obviously go to Undermountain and use it as a testing ground too. I know this sounds a bit goofy, but I think it would be a fun way to include an iconic character old school NPC into the Realms. Maybe if I ever end up running Dragon Heist properly, I'll follow it up with this idea.

What do you think? Would the trapmaster set up shop in Skullport and use Undermountain as a proving ground for his work?

Friday Night D&D - Session 2

You can read the recap of the first session here.

Party

Primhorn Graniteback - stout halfling fighter
Luna - tiefling sorcerer (dragon blooded)
Glynmaris - moon elf rogue

I will post short character backgrounds and art once I get them from the players.

This recap was written by Glynmaris' player, Kevin.

----------------------------------------------------------

The group ties up the 2 sleeping kenku. The kenku wounded in battle is tossed into the filth laden closet, where Renaer Neverember was kept, while the group interrogates the remaining kenku. The kenku quickly succumbs to the dual intimidation of Primhorn and Glynmaris, divulging to the group that they work for the Xanathar's Guild. The kenku informs the group in a high pitched nasally voice that it was to follow the yellow arrows in the sewer to their hideout. When asked who their boss was, the kenku responded via its cursed mimicry in a vaguely orcish sounding voice "Xanathar sends his regards." Quickly tiring of the kenku's annoying manner of speaking, Glynmaris orders the creature to respond with nods and head shakes to his yes or no questions. They discover that their boss was a half-orc and that the high pitched voice belongs to neither a human or an elf. Before the questioning could continue the party hears what sounds like a dozen armored soldiers approaching the warehouse. Primhorn affects a stoic guardsman position, Luna attempts to hide behind some crates but leaves her forehead and horns exposed, while Glynmaris places a knife to the throat of the kenku in case reinforcements have arrived.

Luckily the dozen individuals happen to be members of the City Watch, Glynmaris remarks that this is the first time he has ever been glad to see the City Watch. The captain of the guard quickly recognizes Renaer Neverember and takes on a subservient bearing to the noble. The group informs the guards that they were hired by Volo to ascertain the whereabouts of his friend Floon Blagmar, and in the course of their investigation came upon these kenku who had survived a battle between the Xanathar's Guild and the Zhentarim. They discovered Renaer being held captive in the filth encrusted closet and began interrogating the kenku before the guard arrived. The group informs the guard of the additional kenku in the closet and what information the other had divulged. The captain thanks the group for the information. He gives them a friendly warning to leave the police work to the guard and to be wary that other guardsmen are not as lenient or forgiving as he is, but to be careful if they continue in their quest.

As they leave the warehouse the group is intercepted by a scruffy half-elf dressed in rags who wields a large two-handed morningstar/staff type of weapon. The half-elf introduces himself as one Angus Nibtooth, cleric of Waukeen, and noticing the spectacle the group is leaving and their bedraggled disposition offers his service as a mercenary healer to the group. They negotiate the terms of 1 gp for each battle the cleric is involved in and 5 gp per healing spell cast. Noticing the poor shape of the man's clothing and their suspected destination, the group takes Angus back to the warehouse where he strips several of the fallen men of boots and clothing to outfit himself. The group then retrieves the money contained by the fallen brigands, and then collects their weapons which consists of 6 rapiers and 6 daggers. Glymaris pockets 4 of the daggers, Primhorn commandeers a rapier, and Angus is given a dagger.

The group then retires to the home of Glynmaris' sister where they recuperate. After Glynmaris undergoes his reverie, he sells the remaining weaponry to a nearby merchant. Fully healed and with spells replenished, the group retraces their steps to the warehouse and locates an entrance to the sewer that has the manhole lid ajar. The group descends into the foul smelling depths, Glynmaris leading the way watching for traps and ambushes.

The group soon comes to an intersection where they encounter a small grapefruit sized creature that has a large toothy maw that rests below a giant eye, with 4 eyestalks on top of the spherical creature's body. As soon as the creature snarls, Glynmaris sprints towards the creature faster than should be possible. In his haste Glynmaris slips in the filth, wildly missing his strike against the creature. The slip may have saved his life as immediately afterwards the creature fired a ray of frost at him. The rest of the group quickly engages the enemy, Luna manages to wound the monster with a firebolt cantrip, Angus hits it with a sacred flame cantrip, and Primhorn plays defense. After this initial salvo the monster starts moving erratically causing the group to miss all their attempts to vanquish the beast, it then retaliates by blasting Glynmaris with a ray of force that pushes him back 30 feet. Glynmaris responds by landing a devastating strike with his rapier that skewers the beholderkin through its main eye and out the back, leaving the creature resembling a shish kabob.

The group severs the 4 eyestalks of the creature to sell as alchemical reagents/spell components after Luna recalls that beholder/beholderkin parts are magical in nature and valuable to alchemists and magic users.

Continuing down the sewer passageways the group soon comes to another junction where they notice a ramp that rises out of the muck of the sewer floor which leads to a stone door. While investigating the area, Glynmaris notices a suspicious spot in the wall behind him and discovers a cleverly hidden secret door. They enter the door to discover a chamber with multiple doors leading out of it. Glynmaris scouts all the doors for light and sound emanating from beyond. All but one of the doors are dark and silent, behind that lone door Glynmaris hears the sounds of a man screaming in pain.

The group decides to try and ambush the beings behind the door. Glynmaris attempts to quietly sneak in through the door to hide, while Primhorn and the others are to wait 30 seconds before rushing in to engage the enemy at which point Glynmaris will surprise the enemy. However the plan goes awry when Glynmaris botches his attempt at stealth and alerts the enemy to their presence.

Inside the group discover a half-orc in robes wielding a staff standing on top of a human male with red curly hair who is screaming in pain, a tall spindly purple hued creature with tentacles around its mouth, and a creature that resembles a large brain supported by 4 clawed legs. Luna quickly casts a sleep spell which puts the half-orc and the red-haired man, presumed to be Floon, to sleep. The tentacled creature's eyes flash and Luna is forced to cast sleep on the party. Angus and Glynmaris are immune to the spell and remain standing. The tentacled creature runs past the group, taking a vicious hit from Glynmaris and a dose of radiant energy from a sacred flame cast by Angus, before placing a symbol into a pillar and disappearing in a flash.

As Primhorn, Luna, the robed half-orc, and Floon slumber Angus and Glynmaris engage the brain like creature in battle. Glynmaris takes a slash to the chest from the beast before retaliating with a brutal stab of his rapier, unfortunately the beast overwhelms Glynmaris who is rendered unconscious by the monster's unrelenting strikes. Angus eventually destroys the monster with a blast of sacred flame before reviving the group. The group surrounds the half-orc with weapons raised before it awakens from its magically induced slumber and Glynmaris lands a brutal slice through the half-orc's neck resulting in an Amnian Necktie on the man. Luna discovers a spellbook on the half-orc which she confiscates along with some coins for the group. The group find some more coins and 2 potions in a chest next to a stone throne.

The group resuscitates Floon and soon discovers a hidden tunnel, which leads out of the hideout and into the basement of a family of halfing brewers. Primhorn tries to bluff his way out by shielding the family of the horrible nature of their arrival but the family patriarch sees through his lie of omission and forces him to tell him the whole truth. They inform the halflings of the nature of the tunnel and where it leads along with what inhabits the area and suggest they barricade it until they can come back and fully clear out the area.

The group decides to clean up at a bathhouse before going to the Yawning Portal to meet Volo. After bathing and arriving at the tavern Volo quickly descends upon the group and snatches up his friend Floon in a giant hug. Volo then sheepishly informs the group that he is sadly low on the funds he promised the group, but before they can protest, he quickly offers to transfer a deed to the group for a historic building called Trollskull Manor located in Waterdeep's North Ward. He purchased the home because he heard it was haunted and he was investigating for paranormal disturbances for his next book. The group quickly realizes that this prize is far more valuable and accepts. Glynmaris feeling greedy and petty, from being lied to, demands Volo's hat as well. They then locate a magistrate to facilitate the transfer of the deed, which Volo is forced to pay the fees.

 ----------------------------------------------------------
Once again everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I introduced Angus because the party needed healing, but I didn't want them to just get a free cleric. He's a greedy (but practical) mercenary cleric from the Moonshae Isles.

Friday Night D&D - Session 1

A week ago I ran the first session of my new 5E D&D campaign. We're starting the game with Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.

Party
Primhorn Graniteback - stout halfling fighter
Luna - tiefling sorcerer (dragon blooded)
Glynmaris - moon elf rogue

I will post short character backgrounds and art once I get them from the players.

This recap was written by Glynmaris' player, Kevin.
----------------------------------------------------------

 (At the Yawning Portal)

Yagra, a half-orc mercenary acquainted with Graniteback, is engaged into a fistfight with a drunk with eye tattoos all over his head. Graniteback seeing his friend in combat goes to ascertain what is happening, seeing his arrival the tattooed man's 4 friend jump into the fray. Luna casts a sleep spell knocking 2 of the men unconscious, Yagra drops another man, and the two remaining men concede defeat and remove their compatriots.

After the battle a loud scream is heard and a troll with 3 stirges stuck to his back and 3 other stirges emerge from the yawning portal. Glynmaris eviscerates a stirge with a throwing dagger, Graniteback slices through a second, and Luna incinerates the third stirge. Yagra and the tavern owner Durnan engage the troll in melee. Glynmaris throws an oil flask at the troll which Luna ignites, Durnan and Yagra use chairs to push the emblazoned monster over the edge of the Yawning Portal where it lands with a loud splat.

Volothamp Geddarm "Volo" impressed with the way the group handled themselves approaches the characters and offers them 10 gp each payable now and a 100 gp each payable on completion to discover the whereabouts and rescue his friend and fellow nobleman Floon Blagmar, who was last seen at the Skewered Dragon in the Docks district. On the way to the Docks district the group comes upon a scene where the city watch is investigating the aftermath of vicious battle between 2 rival gangs. Upon closer inspection Glynmaris notices that some of the men have tattoos of eyes on them, members of the Xanathar's Guild, and other have a tattoo of a winged serpent, members of the Zhentarim.

The group arrive at the Docks District and visit Xoblob's shop, who Glynmaris knows is a seller of trinkets and a known source of local information. After Glynmaris fails to persuade Xoblob to divulge his information about Floon, Luna intimidates the man by threatening to burn down his establishment into telling the group that Floon and a well-dressed fellow of similar appearance and bearing were jumped outside the shop by rough-looking men in black leather armor. Xoblob thinks there were five attackers, but none of them looked familiar. One of them had a black tattoo of a winged snake on his neck. Glynmaris purchases a hilt to a broken rapier, and Luna purchases a large dragon scale that has been painted purple.

The group then traveled to the Skewered Dragon where Graniteback befriends the tavern regular's and persuades them to talk about the fight the other night. The regulars inform the group that Floon was here with Volo, and after Volo left Floon stuck around and met another man, one Renaer Neverember. Five men followed the pair out but haven't been seen since, although they are known to frequent a nearby warehouse that has the symbol of a winged snake on the door.

Arriving at the warehouse, Glynmaris picks the lock on the door and silently opens it to see the aftermath of a battle and 4 kenku inside. The group engages the kenku in battle where Glynamris throws a dagger into one kenku before Luna and Graniteback both take damage. Luna then puts 2 of the kenku to sleep with a spell, Glynmaris stabs the heart out of one and Graniteback and Glenmaris finish the fourth kenku.

After the battle they tie up the two remaining kenkus, one is wounded from Glynmaris. Searching the 1st floor they discover that the battle is made up of Zhents and Xanathar guild members. They discover Renaer Neverember in the warehouse covered in fish guts and vinegar, he tells the group that he believes he was the target of the attack he and Floon were engaged in, as the Zhentarim thinks that his father embezzled a large amount of gold while he was Open Lord, and that he hid the coin somewhere in the city. They think they can find it by using an artifact called the Stone of Golorr, which was in the hands of the Xanathar Guild until recently. It was stolen. The Zhents thought he knew something about all of this, but he says he doesn't. He says he hasn't spoken to his father in years. The group discover a box containing 7 magical pieces of paper that when written and a name spoken fold into little origami birds and fly to that person, the group called them tweets.
----------------------------------------------------------

Everyone had a good time. The group meshed well together. We didn't play too long, because there were some last minute character creation things, but I feel like it was a great start to the game. We didn't even fall into the classic too much out of game chat, though that could be because all of the players didn't know each other. The only issue the party is seeing is the lack of healer. We originally had a fourth player, but haven't heard if they're still interested. I do have a few friends that are going to drop in and out, so we might be able to take care of things that way.

My Next Campaign

Starting at the beginning of the year I'm going to be running a 5E game every other Friday night. I've got four players so far and while I've known them all for years, I've never played D&D with them. I'm having an internal debate about how I want to start the game out. These are the two adventures I'm leaning towards.

I know that Lost Mine is a fun adventure because I ran it when 5e first came out. It's got a nice variety and I'm very familiar with it. In contrast, Waterdeep Dragon Heist is the new hotness. Though I've not read it yet,  I've heard some great things from folks that are running it.

If Lost Mines is the route I go, I plan on adding another lost mine (Glitterdoom). I also think the Kobold Art Exhibit will make an appearance. Some of the monster variations from Volo's Guide will definitely be added in.

If I go with Dragon Heist, I'm going to make Manshoon the villain so that the adventure is set during winter. This works with the timing of the game and lets me use Winter's Splendor. I can also use my copy of Cloud Giant's Bargain. Of course, if I use Dragon Heist I can also go right into Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

With both adventures I'm going to introduce a character from The Mermaid's Blessing early on. I'm also going to do a 5E version of the Secret Party House of the Hill Giant Playboy because it's just sounds fun as Hell and I never got to use it.

So what games do you have lined up for the new year?

Celebrate Winter's Splendor!

Download a free holiday adventure for 5e from WotC. Winter's Splendor is a low level adventure set in the city of Waterdeep and connected to a noble family that's a part of the Dragon Heist adventure.

I skimmed the adventure and it seems like a nice mix of rp, puzzles, and combat. It some interesting rewards  and an Easter egg connected to my favorite published NPC, Blinksy.
