#RPGaDAY2024 - Day 4

 "RPG with great art"

While the books had some just plain weird stuff, I think one of my favorite RPG's artwise is Changeling: The Dreaming. This is primarily because of the work of Rebecca Guay and Tony DiTerlizzi. Here are some of my favorites.

Music Monday - Harpy Hare

I discovered this fae tune last week and can't get it out of my head. The accompanying illustrated video makes me love it even more. This will definitely be a bardic song in my games.

#RPGaDAY2022 Day 9 - What Is The 2nd RPG You Bought?

The second RPG I bought was the 1st edition of Changeling: The Dreaming. I snagged used copies of the core book and the player's guide. Not too much later I also picked of Freeholds and Hidden Glens, The Autumn People, and the Immortal Eyes Trilogy sourcebooks. I absolutely adored that game. The artwork was fantastic, featuring Rebecca Guay and Tony DiTerlizzi prominently. Though the Eurocentric view wasn't the best in hindsight, I loved the setting and story. I really related to it. A part of me still does. Sadly, I accidently left all of my Changeling books in Columbus when I moved from there. One day I might try to pick them up again.

Yours To Keep

This week I found out that the Changeling 20th Anniversary book is available on OBS. I know it's probably been out for a bit, but I'm not super perceptive about some things. While I don't think I'll drop the cash for a full printed copy right now, I did spend a couple of bucks to get Yours To Keep: A Changeling The Dreaming 20th Anniversary Edition Jumpstart. This book isn't anything that's not been done. It's a classic quickstart. We're presented with details about changelings and their society. We got some basic rules to play and an overview of faerie magic. Then we are introduced to the small shore town of Point Avalon and it's fae inhabitants. This is followed by an adventure and pregenerated characters.

This is the first official Changeling: The Dreaming material released in years and I'm pretty excited about the opportunity to dig into it. Just glancing I see some rules changes and expanded kith and magic, which is awesome.

Maybe I can finally get some folks to give Changeling a shot.

#RPGADAY2017 - Day 17

Day 17: Which RPG have you owned the longest and not played?

Once again, that distinction goes to Changeling the Dreaming. I bought the core book and player's guide in 2000 and have still yet to play it. Well I ran 2 short sessions of it, but I've never actually played and I don't know that I count those.

Since that initial purchase I've bought many other Changeling books that I'll never play...

#RPGADAY2017 - Day 12

Day 12: Which RPG has the most inspiring interior art?

I didn't have to second guess myself at all for this one. In my humble (ever so humble... like damn I'm the most humble person you'd ever meet) opinion, Changeling the Dreaming has the best interior art. Yes some of it is really weird, but the Tony DiTerlizzi and Rebecca Guay art makes up for it in spades.

#RPGADAY2017 - Day 1

Day 1: What published RPG do you wish you were playing right now?

If I could play any published game right now, I'd probably go with Changeling: The Dreaming? Why? I've talked about the game before. Changeling is a game that I have many books for. There are only a few books in the line I don't have. I absolutely adore the setting and its one that has helped me cope with some rough stuff.

Oh and I've never actually played it....

*grumble grumble*

So yeah, if I could play anything right now, I'd go with Changeling; The Dreaming.

Honorable Mentions: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Mutants and Masterminds

Are You Sure/That We Are Awake? It Seems To Me/That Yet We Sleep, We Dream.

Changeling: The Dreaming is a truly bittersweet game for me. It was my first non-D&D game purchase. It's a game that I found to often be dismissed by many World of Darkness players I knew. Changelings were never as powerful as the others, so no one wanted to play a wandering troll knight when they could go full crinos or use celerity and be like the Flash. It didn't stop me from loving the game though. I immediately fell hard for it. I was 14 when I bought my first Changeling books, but even then the concept of the game struck me to my core.  I've never played the game. I have almost all the books and I ran two sessions of it, but still, I've never played it.

The premise of Changeling: The Dreaming is that once the world was full of wonder and magic. During that time the realms of the fae, the Dreaming, were connected to Earth. Cold logic, lack of imagination, and disbelief severed the connection between the realms. The faerie nobility, the sidhe, fled the world. The remaining fae used rituals to bind their souls to mortals, becoming changelings. The souls would be reborn time after time (unless they were destroyed by banality). When man went to the stars, their was a resurgence of glamour (creative energy) and the gates to the Dreaming opened up. During this time, the sidhe returned, but instead of bonding with humans, they essentially took over human forms (no one is sure what happened to the souls of these humans). For this reason, the sidhe are considered changelings (they're a merging of fae and human), but they don't reincarnate like others.

The characters in a Changeling: The Dreaming game must deal with being a part of two worlds. They see reality, but they can also see the fantastic creatures and things of imagination. They must live this double life and reach balance. Unfortunately, our reality is cold and they most also fight against the encroachment of banality. A part of them will eventually die, because they've grown up.

This is what makes Changeling: The Dreaming such a wonderful and sad. You get to be whimsical and tap into that inner wonder that most of us have. Unfortunately, the game also deals with the tragic fact that that wonder, even if we never truly lose it, fades as we grow older.

I know I've been gushing about Changeling, but it wasn't perfect. Honestly, the system was a bit clunky. I mean the original World of Darkness wasn't exactly streamlined, but Changeling was even more complex. Also, the way the Dreaming is described is very Euro-centric. Later sourcebooks would add more Changelings from around the world, but the core game was very European.

Still, those sour spots aside, the books are my favorites. Maybe one day I'll get to play it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'll leave you with some of my favorite illustrations from the books:

#RPGaDay2015 - Day 12

Day 12: Favourite RPG Illustration -
I have always loved Tony DiTerlizzi's work, especially his Changeling: The Dreaming and Planescape stuff. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be his illustration of Leigh, one of the protagonists of the Immortal Eyes trilogy, that appeared in the core Changeling: The Dreaming book. I adore everything about this and it reminds me of an interesting time in my life.

#RPGaDay 22

Day 22 - Best Secondhand RPG Purchase

My best secondhand purchase (or at least my favorite), was one of my first. It wasn't too long after I started playing D&D. My local game store had used copies of Changeling: The Dreaming, it's Player's Guide, and the sourcebooks for the Immortal Eyes trilogy (for about 40 bucks total). I used my birthday money to get them and I've never regretted the decision.

Changeling: The Dreaming will always be the game I absolutely adore. In many ways it's the most tragic of the old World of Darkness books, but to me it's also the most hopeful.

I've never played it. I've made characters. I've ran it. I've written fiction about it, but never played.

Maybe one day...

C is for Changeling: The Lost

Changeling: The Lost is a game that I've posted material about before.

The premise of the game is that your character was a normal per
son, kidnapped for some reason by the otherworldly and inhuman fae (known as Keepers). While in the faerie world your body was changed to suit the needs/desires of your captor. You could have been made a soldier, a beastly hound, or even a doll to be admired and locked away. However, this wasn't the life you desired and you fought your way back through the Hedge (border between worlds, which appears to be a hedge of thorns) to the world.

Unfortunately once you returned, you found that you no longer belonged. The time in the fae world changes a person. In addition, one can't simply return to his or her former life. When a person is taken the Keeper replaces them with a construct double, known as a fetch. To protect themselves and find purpose, the Lost (as the changelings are called) band together in Courts (tied to Seasons and emotions).

Changeling is a fun game. Of the World of Darkness games, I think it is my favorite. It's a faerie tale game true to its origins. Faeries are big, bad, scary monsters. They are fearsome and unearthly. The work of Neil Gaiman is very Changeling-esque, especially Neverwhere, Coraline, and MirrorMask.

If you would like to try Changeling for yourself, you can download a demo here.

The darlking dancer known as Strawberry Gashes, doesn't know who she was before she was taken by the Gentry. She doesn't remember much of her time with her keeper either. Just flashes of silver, red, and pain. She stumbled out of the hedge and was taken in by Harvey, a beast of the Spring Court and owner of "The Rabbit Hole." The rabbit man took good care of her and she became quite attached to him. Quickly adopting the ways of the Spring Court and it's obsession with desire, she began to work at the strip club.

Not remember her true name, she decided to name herself after her favorite song to work to. Strawberry tends to stay covered from the neck down when she isn't working. Her body is a road map of scars, some souvenirs of her time with her keeper, some fresh. A darker sort, she's not above mixing pain and pleasure.

Currently, Strawberry serves as a source of information for the Spring Court and it's allies. She has a knack for getting useful information from her customers. She's extremely loyal to Harvey and gets along well with the dancers and other employees of The Rabbit Hole.

Faces of the Lost - Sir Ryan Avery

I'm getting ready to start a Changeling: The Lost game for my best friend. I'm a fan of the original Changeling, but she likes the newer version so that's what we're going with (plus the rules are much simpler). I'll post npcs and things from the game on here. The first character is an update of a Dreaming character that I always wanted to play. It's pretty apparent that when I came up with a darker Lost version of him I was influence by the movie Drive.

“Sir” Ryan Avery

Virtue: Fortitude
Vice: Lust
Concept: Modern Questing Knight
Seeming: Fairest
Kith: Romancer
Court: Courtless

Attributes
Intelligence 2, Wits 1, Resolve 3
Strength 2 ,Dexterity 3 ,Stamina 3
Presence 2, Manipulation 1, Composure 3

Mental
Crafts 3 (Automobiles), Investigation 2, Medicine 1, Occult 1,

Physical
Athletics 1, Brawl 2 (Blocking), Drive 4 (Stunts), Larceny 1 (GTA), Stealth 1, Weaponry 2

Social
Intimidation 2, Streetwise 2

Blessing:
Fairest of them All - Can spend Glamour to improve dice pools that include Presence, Manipulation and Persuasion. Each point spent increases one dice pool by one point. He also suffers no untrained penalty for using Social skills in which she has no dots.

Narcissus’s Blessing” - Others viewing him are subject to a subtle illusion that emphasizes those aspects of the changeling that the subject find most appealing, sometimes going so far as to convince the subject that small aspects of the changeling are utterly different than they really are. (An observer who finds bright green eyes particularly appealing may believe that a blue-eyed Romancer has emerald eyes instead.) This manifests as a –3 to all characters’ subsequent attempts to accurately describe her to others, including characters attempting to create police sketches. The blessing applies to clothing as well, but a sufficiently extraordinary trinket might grant a bonus to the roll. This is not a disguise, however, and unless the subject’s standard of beauty has changed significantly between one meeting of the Romancer and the next, he recognizes her without any difficulty. Recording devices, which have no preconceived notions of beauty and no expectations, are affected by the Wyrd’s magic as well, recording the individual as remarkably average. The –3 penalty applies to attempts to identify the character based on recorded footage or photographs as well.

Curse:
Unbalanced” - Suffers a –1 die penalty on dice pools to avoid losing Clarity

Contracts: Vainglory 2, Artifice 2, Goblin Contracts ( Trading Luck For Fate 1)

Merits: Direction Sense 1, Stunt Driver 3, Striking Looks 2, Token (Driver’s Little Helper) 1

Wyrd: 1
Clarity: 7
Glamour: 5
Health: 8
Willpower: 6
Size: 5
Defense: 1
Initiative Modifier: 6
Speed: 10

--------

Sir Ryan doesn’t remember much of his past before he was taken by the Gentry. Something about him struck the fancy of a noble who decided to make him her Gawain. Armed with sword, shield, and steed, Ryan searched the realms seeking the unknown token of his mistress’s affection. No matter how much he searched, no matter how hard he fought, or the scars that he returned with, he was never able to please her.

One day he realized that he would never find what he truly sought. His mistress would have him forever quest. He would never have the satisfaction of fulfilling his duty and pleasing his courtly lover. This is what caused him to leave the realms of the fae and return to Earth.

Back in the mortal realm, his trusty mount has been replaced by a steeds of iron, steel, and fiberglass. Ryan’s riding skills transformed as he entered the realms of the children of Adam and he found out that he was an amazing driver. Having no money, he acts as mechanic, stunt driver, courier, and as an occasional mercenary. Instead of shining armor, he wears driver’s gloves and a white jacket with a scorpion emblazoned upon it. Instead of a shining sword, he wields hammers, screwdrivers, and the tools of a mechanic.

Old habits die hard they say, and Ryan realized that even in this world (which was no longer his home) he sought something out. Determined to find this and bring himself peace and respite, Ryan still quests.
