Neil Gaiman talks about 'The Sandman'

This is tonight - don't forget!

The Guardian events team have announced (here) an evening with Neil Gaiman talking about The Sandman

Monday 5th December 2022, 8-9pm GMT - tickers are £7 / £12 / £18

Neil Gaiman joins the next Guardian Live Book Club to talk about his New York Times bestselling comic book series, The Sandman.

First published in 1989 and covering 75 volumes, The Sandman follows Morpheus, one of seven immortal siblings who embody the natural forces: Death, Desire, Destiny, Delerium, Destruction and – in Morpheus’s case – Dream. Ageless, anthropomorphic and metaphysical, Morpheus occupies a fantastical world not too far from our own – a world in which chaos reigns and morality is always open to interpretation.

In August this year, 30 years on from the publication of the first volume, Netflix released a highly anticipated adaptation of The Sandman – an engrossing, lavish production starring Tom Sturridge, Jenna Coleman and Gwendoline Christie. It has received critical acclaim for its raw emotional depth, its intricately timeless storytelling, and its examinations of gender, sexuality and racial diversity.

Gaiman is the creator of over 30 books for adults and children, including Coraline and Stardust, as well as Good Omens, which he wrote with Terry Pratchett. He will join former Guardian books reporter Alison Flood to talk about his inspirations and the creative process behind the series that made him an icon.

This event will be hosted on a third-party live streaming platform Zoom, please refer to their privacy policy and terms and conditions before purchasing a ticket to the event. After registering, please refer to your confirmation email for access to the event.

Closed captions will be available for this event.

8pm GMT | 9pm CET | 12pm PST | 3pm EST

Or see this time zone converter to check your local live streaming time.

If you are unable to join at the time of streaming, this event will be available to watch on demand in the days following. A link to the recording will be sent to all ticket holders.

Atomeka - Bojeffries Terror Tome

A couple of recent purchases (and the death of Garry Leach) has spurred me on to look at Atomeka Press. A look at the Grand Comics database (here) is helpful (thanks for the images!) but incomplete. So, I thought I'd try and rustle up my own complete (?) list of Atomeka publications.

I've looked at the original A1 series (from 1989) here
The Epic comics anthology (from 1992) is here
A1 series (from 1992) is here
Damien Darke is here
Atomeka miscellany
A1 True life bikini confidential is here

Now, thanks to friend of the blog Reuben Willmott we can look at the publication that started me off down this particular rabbit-hole...Yes it's the Bojeffries Terror Tome...
Contents are as follows:
1). Bojeffries - Festus: dawn of the dead [script by Alan Moore; art by Steve Parkhouse]
2). Baby cakes [script by Neil Gaiman; art by Michael Zulli]
3). Mr Monster - monster museum [Michael Gilbert]
4). Hotwire DE [Steve Pugh]
5). The Proxy [script by Ramsey Campbell; art by David Lloyd; lettering by Bambos]
6). Eddy Current - prologue [Ted McKeever]
7). Scarecrow [Charles Vess]
8). Eddy Current - judgement [Ted McKeever]
9). Bojeffries - Song of the terraces [script by Alan Moore; art by Steve Parkhouse]

You'll probably receignised the cover as a recreation of an old Warrior cover...issue 12 to be precise

as editor Dave Elliott points out (see below) the art is by Garry Leach (albeit based on the original Steve Parkhouse cover)

if you look really hard you can spot some subtle differences between the pieces - the background here (below) is different, for instance

And here's what the cover to issue #2 would have been...again art is by Garry Leach in a Steve Parkhouse style (which he totally nails!)

and here's that picture in colour - thanks Dave!

'Orrible Murders

The David Lloyd bibliography (here) has a one line mention of a comic from September 1992 called 'Orrible Murders! The question is though...what is this comic? Until just the other day I had no idea what it was, the good news is that I'm much clearer about that...

Published by the Society for Strip Illustration as a limited edition (of 200) the issue I've picked up has been signed by a number of the creators involved - specifically David Lloyd, Nick Vince, Duncan Fegredo, Hilary Robinson, Dave King, Ian Ellery, Brad! Brooks and Roger Langridge...
Neil Gaiman's plot is set in Deathwatch manor and sees a number of characters attempting to survive 3 nights at the manor in order to inherit the estate of the recently deceased, eccentric millionaire owner, Silas Gore.

Here's the list of creators involved...

Here's Sean Phillips and Duncan Fegredo (whatever happened to them?) contribution...

Here's David contribution to page 14...
