Biggles - Cinebooks

I've looked before (back in 2017 (!) here and here) about Biggles graphic novels that were produced. Yesterday (here) I looked at those volumes produced by publisher Red Fox. Today it's the turn of publisher Cinebooks.

Biggles - Red fox graphic novels

I've looked before (back in 2017 (!) here and here) about Biggles graphic novels that were produced. A recent chat with someone reminded me that I'd never covered the Biggles graphic novels published by Red Fox, so here they are...

At the time of typing all of these are available from ace ebay seller barelyreadbooks

These all seem to be quite pricy these days so good luck tracking down affordable copies.

UPDATED: Hawk Books - postcards

There's undoubtedly a post to be written about the comics reprint books that Hawk Books published in the late '90s but I'm going to start with something a little more esoteric first. Yes, it's the postcards that they produced. To be more precise, it's the postcards sets that they produced that I've found out about so far, there could be plenty of others out there that I know nothing about.

Updates in red below

Hawk books 6 postcard set - Nostalgia in the air

There's an advert I found here that shows what the 'Nostalgia in the air' postcards (above) look like and has an advert for a set entitled 'Bunter comes for Christmas' - my question is...is that set different from 'Greyfriars Christmas series' (below) - it SOUNDS like it's different but it's hard to know for sure.

Hawk books 6 postcard set - Greyfriars Christmas series
As you can just about see from the scan above my set of these postcards is still in their original shrinkwrap so I can't actually show you what the crads look like. If I ever find a 2nd set I'll open that set and let you know.

Mike Western & Ron Embleton draw Biggles

Ace comics artist, writer & Historian has pointed me in the direction of some lovely original artwork for sale on French ebay - pages of Biggles artwork from the pages of TV Express no less! How it go to France is a mystery - and it will require someone with deep pockets to bring it back 'home' - but enjoy it nonetheless.

This is a Ron Embleton page - yours for 800 euro

This is also by Ron Embleton and is yours for 1,200 euro

This is a page by Mike Western (probably better known for his black & white artwork) and is yours for 700 euro

Another page by Mike Western - again, yours for 700 euro

Biggles - part 2

1981 also saw the publication of Bjorn Karlstrom's last contribution to the series, Biggles and the menace from space

1983 saw a new writer/artist on board for Biggles in the Kalahari - Stig Stjernvik...

...as you can see the cartoony style is not much different to what has come before

The last volume, Biggles and the Gibraltar bomb, is almost as hard to acquire as the first (expect to pay £30+) - as this was published in 1984 (and is about German bombs) no link to the 1988 death of 3 IRA members should be inferred - but I wonder of the high price for this volume is because some people assume that the title infers some sort of link?

All in all, 6 volumes that form an often overlooked contribution to the Swedes to UK comics!

Biggles - part 1

The 1970s and '80s saw a selection of Swedish (!) originated adventures of Captain W.E. John's immortal hero Biggles reach these shores, to celebrate completing the set I thought I'd share scans of them with you

From 1978, the first (and most expensive volume to acquire these days - prices start at about £30) story....

Also from 1978...

There's then a break in publication until 1981 when this volume appears

In all cases text and (fairly straightforward, cartoony) illustrations are by Bjorn Karlstrom and the translation is by Peter James
