2003 & 2004 saw Kev Sutherland expand his efforts into producing 2 huge festivals a year...

Here's the May 2003 cover image - again, this was a piece of A2 paper folded into an A5 size leaflet (which included the voting form for the 6th national comics awards). The guest list was, as ever, enormous. Star guests were Jeff Smith, Bryan Talbot & Jim Lee.

cover art for the one-day festival in London in November  2003, cover art by Mark Buckingham. Usual A2 piece of paper folded up into A5 size.

The last Bristol event, sob! A2 sized piece of paper folded up as usual. Voting form for the awards, loads of guests, panel etc.

Redeye - Accent UK

To call Redeye a 'fanzine' might make you think of something a lot more amateur looking than it was. To call it a 'magazine' might make you think of glossy paper and full colour printing - and it didn't have that either. Instead, it sat someone in between those 2. A4 sized, colour covers, 60-100 pages long, absolutely jam-packed with news, reviews, interviews, retrospectives - with a real focus on British comics. Everything I could love in a magazine really.

The fact that it was supposed to be quarterly but only came out about twice a year wasn't a problem because it was always full of stuff I wanted to read. It was printed with a really tiny font - thus meaning that it took even longer to get through your 60, 70, 80 pages of content.

Rogue Trooper - the art of war prog

I've come across this rare 2000AD variant before (on various Facebook groups) but I've never seen a copy up for sale. However, right now there's a copy for sale right here (I'm not the seller).

At the time of typing it's already been bid up to £99 - how much will it go for finally??

This is certainly a 'grail' prog for many 2000AD collectors.

Prog 2005 End-of-Year (2004) Christmas Special variant cover edition with Rogue Trooper art by Ben Flynn - limited promo copies given away free at UK train stations and on the London Underground.

2004 - charity deck of trump cards, part 1

I've previously looked at the great spin-off 'decks of cards' that Kev Sutherland put together for the comics festivals he ran in the early '00s. So far I've looked at...

The (2001) hearts suit of cards is here
The (2001) diamonds suit of cards is here
The (2001) clubs suit of cards is here
The (2001) spades suit of cards is here

He then repeated the exercise in 2003...
Part 1 of the 2003 deck of cards is here
Part 2 of the 2003 deck of cards is here

Part 3 of the 2003 deck of cards is here

And the 2003 London (winter) comics festival here
And then some extra items here
And then the cards from the 2003 London (winter) comics festival here

A number of these images have been provided thanks to friend of the blog Simon Miller. One of the image he sent was the one below showing his collection of the cards.

The image on the right was of interest because it gave me the best 'evidence' that a final deck of cards existed. I'd previously been alerted to its existence by friend of the blog Ewan Brownlow, he'd provided me with the images below

Not a bad start but not it left a lot of cards to find! Luckily Simon has filled in all the gaps in one fell swoop :) So here's part 1 of my look at the 2004 Bristol charity deck of trump cards...

Bristol comic expo, 2004-2014

I've recently looked here at the London 2003 comic festival but now I want to look at the conventions that succeeded the events that Kev Sutherland ran. According to wikipedia...the Bristol international comic & small press expo ran from 2004 until 2014. That should mean that there are plenty of convention programmes out there to collect. So, here are the programmes I've tracked down so far..

Inferno! monthly - covers guide part 6 (of 6)

"Inferno!" magazine was a mainly text based US-comic sized publication that ran monthly from 1997 for about 4 years (there was an issue 0 in White Dwarf 210 and then 46 numbered issues). The focus was, as it said, tales of fantasy & adventure (in the Warhammer (40k) universe.

I didn't buy this at the time but I've collected most of the run now based on the fact that, apart from the fantastic covers, there is some comic contents (albeit limited).

Anyway, I thought I'd share the covers with you as some of the artists are well-known and some of them deserve to be better known! Anyway without further delay here's today's selection...

Issue 1-8 were covered here

Issues 9-16 were covered here

Issues 17-24 were covered here

Issues 25-32 were covered here
