Shockwave - 1991

I've looked before at some DC reprint titles that appeared in the UK...
DC action! here
Zones here

and now the third and final title - Shockwave - published by London Editions magazines in 1991 for 4 issues. Here's my covers gallery...

Shockwave, issue 1, 1991, 95p, London Editions magazines
Dave McKean cover art

Shockwave, issue 2, 1991, 95p, London Editions magazines
cover art by Brian Bolland

Shockwave, issue 3, 1991, 95p, London Editions magazines
cover art by Joe Brozowski (AKA JJ Birch)

Shockwave, issue 4, 1991, 95p, London Editions magazines
cover art by David Lloyd

the cancellation of the title must have been quite sudden as the cover of this (final) issue carries a banner for part 1 of an interview with Alan Grant.

A1 (1992) by Atomeka & Epic

A couple of recent purchases (and the death of Garry Leach) has spurred me on to look at Atomeka Press. A look at the Grand Comics database (here) is helpful (thanks for the images!) but incomplete. So, I thought I'd try and rustle up my own complete (?) list of Atomeka publications.

I've looked at the original A1 series (from 1989) here
The Epic comics anthology (from 1992) is here

Now, thanks to friend of the blog Reuben Willmott we can look at some more Atomeka titles...

From 1992 this production with Epic was a colour (!) [rather than black & white] run featuring new material

Atomeka Press - A1 (original series)

A couple of recent purchases (and the death of Garry Leach) has spurred me on to look at Atomeka Press. A look at the Grand Comics database (here) is helpful (thanks for the images!) but incomplete. So, I thought I'd try and rustle up my own complete (?) list of Atomeka publications. I'm going to start with the (original) A1 title and then move onto other series. All of the below have great contributors and are well worth tracking down.

As ever, if you spot I've missed anything then just let me know...

A1 - issue 1 (1989) - cover by Garry Leach

A1 - issue 2 (1989) - cover by John Bolton (below) and Dave McKean (rear cover)

A1 - issue 3 (1989) - cover by Brian Bolland

A1 - issue 4 (1989) - front cover by Simon Bisley, back cover by Moebius

A1 - issue 1 (1989) - cover by William Stout

A1 - issue 1 (1989) - cover by Jamie Hewlett

The A1 true life bikini confidential - cover by Adam Hughes

Dave McKean's first published work

There are many great artistic things about the Comicon 1978 brochure (cover by Frank Bellamy, interior art contributions from Brian Bolland, MichMcMahon, Jack Kirby, Frank Thorne & Brian Lewis - what a list!).

There is also, according to well-known fanzine collector Ewan Bronlow, the first published work by Dave McKean. It's a rather innocuous advert for Alan Green and you can see the initials DM on the right of the advert. Dave was born (according to wikipedia) n 29th December 1963 so that's make him probably just 14 when he drew the advert....

Copies of this con brochure can be found for sale on ebay currently (here for instance - bidding closes just before 4pm today so hurry!)

I've always enjoyed collecting programmes issued by comic conventions - often because they contained unique illustrations - but until I started looking at this in such detail I had no idea just how many programmes there were out there to collect...

Dave McKean at Lakes festival 2021

To celebrate episode 172 of the Mega City Book club (available right here) I thought I'd share some Dave McKean photos that I took at the 2021 Lakes comic art festival

Dave (on the left) and Paul Gravett (right)

birds!

some more impressionistic artwork from Dave

You can read my full review of the festival right here - I could have watched Dave flick through his (electronic) folders of art all day - there was SO much unpublished stuff that we just whizzed through. A great talk!
