If it works, great. But if you run into problems, try building a simple self-contained test case at the command line (not in an IDE) first. That way, if it doesn't work, you can copy and paste the exact commands here, and we'll be able to figure out how to fix it. > I need to use windows.h, as I need to have control over multiple > keyboards connected to the same computer. Try a minimal console program that #includes only <windows.h> and calls only MessageBox(). See whether you can compile and link that; try doing so at the command line first. If it fails, copy and paste the exact command line here. > I also installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express and Microsoft > Windows SDK. Do I need this? No. Don't try to combine it with MinGW. |

Hello, I currently have the task of writing a application using C++ and Qt 4.5 under Windows. I want to do this under Eclipse using Mingw. I use the Qt integration of eclipse using the mingw toolchain, so hopefully eclipse has chosen the right tools for my build chain ;-) I need to use windows.h, as I need to have control over multiple keyboards connected to the same computer. If I get it right, windows.h (and the corresponding libraries) is included in mingw? Under this assumption, I added a #include <windows.h> to my example program. The compiler doesn´t complain about not finding the header, however, when it comes to the windows.h-related code, it complains about not finding the symbols. I also installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express and Microsoft Windows SDK. Do I need this? If I try to add the include-path of the sdk (where especially windows.h is located) to QMakes includepath, I get thousands of errors caused by the mere fact that I include windows.h, I don´t even need to use some windows.h-related symbol to get those errors :-( Note that I get all errors I talked about from the compiler, not the linker. I know that I will probably have to link against some dlls also, but so far I would be glad if I would just make the compiler working... I should note that I am a rather experienced programmer, but so far only under Java and/or in the Linux world. So, the fine-tuning related to mingw, choosing the right make / compiler / etc., dealing with windows.h is new for me. Can anyone give me some hints, or point me to some documentation I didn´t found yet, dealing with how to use windows.h and the related stuff under mingw? Thanks! Wolfgang PS: I can add some compiler output, if needed. -- Jetzt kostenlos herunterladen: Internet Explorer 8 und Mozilla Firefox 3.5 - sicherer, schneller und einfacher! http://portal.gmx.net/de/go/chbrowser |

Hi Greg
thanks for your suggestions, i tried to compile it on Comeau and got this message:
Your Comeau C/C++ test results are as follows:

You can't redefine a typedef in standard C. See, for example:

If you want a reputable second opinion, paste your code here:
http://www.comeaucomputing.com/tryitout
Some compilers may allow typedef redefinition as an extension.
But code that relies on such an extension is not portable.

I'm not an expert, but this does not seem to be MinGW specific. GCC in
general does that. For example, your test.c program does not compile
under Ubuntu 9.04 using GCC 4.3.3 either.

I don't think this is a bug in MinGW. I think it is a deliberate design
choice in GCC. How a C compiler should handle the existence of multiple
typedefs of the same name was left undefined in K&R, and I am not sure
it is clearly defined in C99 either. So (as I understand it) compiler
writers do whatever they want to, in this situation.
Possible approaches to try:
(1) You may be able to get around this issue by removing the first
occurrence of the typedef, and then moving the second "real" typedef to
the location where the first one was (probably a header file, in your
real code).
(2) Alternatively, you could consider removing the use of typedef
entirely, and compiling with g++ instead of gcc, since in C++ the
typdefs are unnecessary :) So (to modify your example)
struct MyStruct;
struct MyStruct {
int x;
} MyStruct;
is valid C++ , and the mingw g++ compiler will accept it, as will GCC
g++ compilers in general.

I am trying to compile the below code using mingw.
----test.c--------------------------------------------------
#include "stdio.h"
typedef struct MyStruct MyStruct;
typedef struct MyStruct {
int x;
}MyStruct;
int main()
{
printf(" main");
return 0;
}
-----------------------------------------------------------
I am getting this error:
test.c:6: error: redefinition of typedef 'MyStruct'
test.c:3: error: previous declaration of 'MyStruct' was here
Is it possible to suppress these errors (some cmd line option that minGW supports)?
I am able to succesfully compile the same using Win32 and RVCT22 compilers.
Is there any solution for this? Is it a bug in MinGW ?
Thanks in advance
Padam

I have installed a package at c:/tcl/lib/net-snmp. While working with config under MSYS I determined that it wanted the include files at c:/tcl/include/net-snmp. Now configure runs to completion. However make is not happy because an include file is missing: net-snmp-config.h. There is an .in file in this directory: net-snmp-config.h.in. I am trying to use it to generate the needed .h file. I ran autoconf from MSYS and gave it the file name as an argument. It ran but no file was generated: autoconf net-snmp-config.h.in. If I try autoconf/configure it reports no such command. It also will not accept "--prefix=/mingw". How should I go about generating the needed .h file? thanx |

I am running MSys and mingw and am wanting to build an SWF file from actionscript. I have the Flex SDK and Java libraries installed on windows, but am having trouble figuring out how to configure MingW to point to these libraries. I even tried copying the FlexSDK into the Mingw /bin directory and that gets the build to start, but it bombs out saying it cannot find the flex config file: "Error: unable to open 'd;d:\mingw\bin\Flex\sdk_4\bin\..\frameworks/fle x-config.xml'" Has anyone tried this, or have ideas on linking in these libraries? -- Jon |

Hello there!
In the piece of makefile below (which actually does nothing), why cd
$(SRCDIR) does not find the directory if I put ";" after (SRCDIR)? On the
contrary, if I remove the ";" it will find it. The makefile works fine in
Linux and Cygwin, but not in MinGW.
SRCDIR = src
MeshFree++:
cd $(SRCDIR);
clean :
cd $(SRCDIR); make clean
The problem is that I need the ";" since I have to execute another makefile
which will be inside SRCDIR:
cd $(SRCDIR); make ...;
Thanks.
Alejandro.

Hi Everybody, I have the following windows resource: 1 VERSIONINFO FILEVERSION 1,0,0,0 PRODUCTVERSION 0,0,0,0 BEGIN BLOCK "StringFileInfo" BEGIN BLOCK "000004b0" BEGIN VALUE "FileDescription", "My App\0" VALUE "FileVersion",SVN_REV VALUE "InternalName", "myapp\0" VALUE "ProductVersion", "1.0\0" END END BLOCK "VarFileInfo" BEGIN VALUE "Translation", 0, 0x04b0 END END To compile I use the command: i586-mingw32msvc-windres windres.rc -O coff -DSVN_REV=365M windres.o But it returns the error: i586-mingw32msvc-windres: windres.rc:10: syntax error What I'm doing wrong? I've already tried: -DSVN_REV=365M -DSVN_REV="365M" -DSVN_REV=\"365M\" -DSVN_REV=\""365M"\" But none of then worked... Thanks in advance, Paulo Flabiano Smorigo |

(No error messages > either.) Running the file with javac and then java worked OK. I've seen a similar symptom with programs written in other languages (I haven't used gcj), and I'd suggest there's a missing DLL/LIB file. For some reason you don't always get an error message in this case, just abrupt termination. Have you got the Windows dependency checker? If so, load your exe into it and that will tell you what's missing. It could be a PATH problem or yet another package needing installation. |

I worked out a solution to this one several years ago - I can't remember the exact details now, except that they are very messy, but I remeber it involves creating an invisible window. The code is encapsulated in my open source library stlplus.sourceforge.net as the 'Backtick Subprocess' class in the portability/subprocesses module. You could take a look at the code or just use the library. |
