Isn't there anybody using MingW for device-drivers or low-level
programming? I guess not, since <ddk/winddk.h> contains some errors;
missing '()' around some macros and extra ';'.
E.g. the BYTE_OFFSET() macro cannot be used as an argument
because of the extra ';' at the end.
I have come up with this patch:

Hello,
I have been trying for a v long time to get ogre configured,
compiled and running on mingw and it has been a v frustrating
experience :-( ... too much I dont understand about mingw.
when I tried to ./configure ogre , it failed to execute
its freetype conftest.exe although all the other tests work ok.
I could capture the exe and it would execute ok , but not from
within the configure script ....
Having fiddled around some , and put env into ./configure
the env from within configure shows
PATH=NONE/bin:NONE/usr/bin:.:/usr/local/bin:/mingw/bin:/bin:
/c/WINDOWS:/c/WINDOWS/COMMAND:/c/PROGRA~1/WIN98RK
vs my normal
PATH=.:/usr/local/bin:/mingw/bin:/bin:/c/WINDOWS:/c/WINDOWS/COMMAND:
/c/PROGRA~1/WIN98RK
(broken over line for readability)
and putting an explicit export PATH=mynormalone;eval <test>
in the configure script works ok ... so where is the other being
picked up from, why is the "NONE" ? , (and why do the other tests
run ok ?)
several other questions ...
... it seems as though .dll's are normally stored in the PATH ie
a bin dir rather than a lib dir ... true?
... is it normal to turn on the import/export fn decorators
or to turn them all off and rely on normal unix way of exporting
everything that isnt static ?
..... an ogre sample exe is failing with an unhelpful error msg
when it start up and barfs , and it is trying to dynamically load
(using the windows loader)
/usr/local/lib/OGRE/RenderSystem_GL.so.exe
which exists , but would the name mangling work for this and would
the windows loader be able to find a lib with an abs path and a .so.exe
suffix ?
Would (should?) this normally be made into a .dll ?
Or any suggestions on how to debug this type of problem ...any lib tools
hat might help?
Sorry for the long post , but responses to any of this appreciated,
Cheers,
Steve Houseman

First of all, many thanks to everyone who answered my questions so patiently! I have a library <http://norsys.com/netica_c_api.htm> which includes a .lib, .dll and .h files (no sources) and I am trying to use it with mingw. it compiles fine but gives many many link errors like $ gcc -mno-cygwin Demo.c -lnetica -L. /cygdrive/c/Temp/ccWKOXYb.o(.text+0x1c):Demo.c: undefined reference to `_imp__NewStreamFile_ns@12' /cygdrive/c/Temp/ccWKOXYb.o(.text+0x3d):Demo.c: undefined reference to `_imp__HasNodeTable_bn@8' /cygdrive/c/Temp/ccWKOXYb.o(.text+0x59):Demo.c: undefined reference to `_imp__GetNodeType_bn@4' /cygdrive/c/Temp/ccWKOXYb.o(.text+0x91):Demo.c: undefined reference to `_imp__GetNodeType_bn@4' /cygdrive/c/Temp/ccWKOXYb.o(.text+0xc9):Demo.c: undefined reference to `_imp__SetNodeFuncState_bn@12' /cygdrive/c/Temp/ccWKOXYb.o(.text+0xf0):Demo.c: undefined reference to `_imp__SetNodeFuncReal_bn@16' msvs links it just fine. is there a way for me to use this library with mingw? thanks! -- Sam Steingold (http://www.podval.org/~sds) running w2k <http://www.camera.org> <http://www.iris.org.il> <http://www.memri.org/> <http://www.mideasttruth.com/> <http://www.palestine-central.com/links.html> MS: our tomorrow's software will run on your tomorrow's HW at today's speed. |

Add the -v switch and report the output. This does not fail for me but
I'm on XP with NTFS.

First, you shouldn't need to declare 'environ', as it is already
declared on stdlib.h.
Second, unless you declare the variable this way:
extern "C" char **environ;
the name will have C++ linkage if you compile with g++.
Third, if you put the declararion on global scope, it is redeclaring
what stdlib.h already declared. The declaration at local scope is
independent of previous declarations.

The term "Non-commercial" that I'm using means "I don't let you sell MinGW Studio without my permission". But the program or any products from it you can sell or do whatever you want with your own license. Actually my intentation is I want to share "MinGW Studio" just in case it might be useful with MinGW's users. And it is free as the above detail. But if these annoucnements disturb the list I will stop it. >I will discuss this further with you privately. Ok. Regards, Parinya |

This is reference to a "C" symbol. You need to say
'extern "C" char **environ;" in C++.
But leave it alone. It's already defined in <stdlib.h>

the funny thing is that if I move the `environ' declaration outside the

Hi I want to develop a windows program that reads the GUID from a MSI package with C. It was no problem to create an exe-file with gcc that runs on non-cygwin platforms (with -mno-cygwin). My problem is the following: I need several functions from the Msi.lib (included in Windows Installer SDK). I've created a libMsi.a with dlltool and moved it to /lib/w32api/ and linked my .o with -lmsi. Compiling and linking worked fine, but if i try to run the exe, it want to load a Msi.lib as a Dynamic Link Library. I've tried to create a DLL from the Msi.lib but then an error appears that the Function MsiOpenPackageA@8 could not be found. I don't see the problem, perhaps it is the convert process from the Msi.lib to the libmsi.a? Or is it impossible to use some function from a .lib-file? Please help me, i'm desperate! :-) Thanks Mischa |

What about if you have other GNU tools .(like DJGPP)?
This can cause the problem.

Yes, I know but I have never added it before for previous version of
MinGW.

Yes, in my case it solves the problem too. But in my user case I was told
that it didn't.
(Please read the thread
http://parinya.homeip.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19 )
I told the user the same thing (adding Mingw\bin path).

Well, I know that this solves the problem but I still prefer the same way
(No need to add any path).
Thank you very much,

Does anyone know how to turn terminal echo off ? This is useful to hide typed characters when prompting for a password ... Can i do this just with MinGW environment or are extra packages absolutely required ? I don't need a complete emulation of the ioctl() functions for terminals, however other mingw users may be interested in that point. Anyway, you would be kind if you could answer just the first question and maybe provide a few lines of code. Regards, Paul |

Umm...what is the reason for the "<<std::end;"?
Why not simply...
std::cout << "Hello, world!";
You see, when I build that app from an ms-dos prompt the compiler doesn't recognize a function called "end",
as such a function is not, afaik, part of the Standard C++ library.
eg.
note: helltest.cpp is what I called the helloworld.cpp source code above.
C:\TEMP\hello>...\mingw\bin\g++ helltest.cpp -c -o helltest.o
helltest.cpp: In function `int main()':
helltest.cpp:4: `end' undeclared in namespace `std'

I did reproduce the error under Win98.
Have you considered modifying the system path ($PATH) to include (in this case) c:\mingw\bin before you
launch the Mingw IDE?
The sort of thing mentioned here usually means that g++ is not able to find (in this case) the c:\mingw\bin
directory. c:\mingw\bin (in this case), as you probably know, is where as.exe (as.exe is included with Mingw-3.0 rc3)
is usually kept.
However, by adding c:\mingw\bin (in this case) to the beginning of the Win98 PATH variable, the inability of
g++ to find as.exe went away.
A quick fix, even though it is not part of the installation, is to simply add a .bat file somewhere that sets the
PATH variable before you begin building/compiling applications. Either that, or modify whatever it is that is being
used to launch Mingw IDE and reset the PATH variable there.
It might look something like this:
@echo off
Reminder: This will launch an ms-dos console window
PATH=c:\mingw\bin;%PATH%
Reminder: This is for Win98/Win98SE/WinME
command.exe
...

Oh, please don't. If it works with the mingw gcc, hopefully it will be obvious what the difference is. The two compilers should be very close to the same thing these days except for some occasional pollution from cygwin libraries and headers. The listed errors did not resemble cygwin library pollution. cgf |

I'm developping an IDE for MinGW and then I got a message from a user
that are using my program that he can't use my IDE with MinGW 3.0rc3 but it
works with MinGW 2.0.
And he reported the problem below.
First time I thought the installation problem but it shouldn't because it
is just a setup program(MinGW 3.0-rc3)
Then I focused at my program should have a problem but I couldn't figure
out why?
And I got another user reported the same problem to me but he said when he
re-installed it again the problem is gone!
I tried to install it on my computer "compile and build" every thing works
just fine on my computer.
The same question as yours occurred! (I can't reproduce the problem)
Finally I had to get my old computer(133MHz)
- Formatted and Installed a fresh Windows 98SE
- Installed MinGW 3.0 rc3
- Tried to compile a helloworld program
#include <iostream>
int main()
{
std::cout << "Hello, world!" << std::end;

}
