The invention relates to new and useful improvements in easy opening containers and more particularly to ,a hermetically closed container wherein the endsare secured to the body portion by double seaming. An object of the invention is to provide an easy opening container of the above type with score lines adjacent one end thereof for separating, the end from the body with in- 1 serted collars, one of which is attached to the body of the container below the score lines and the other of which is attached to the end by the double seaming of the; end to the body.'

A'further object of the invention is to provide an easy opening container of the above type wherein the inserted collar attached to the body is inset from the body wall above the lower score line and wherein the collar attached tothe end is produced by folding the metal blank forming the collar sothatthe raw edges of the blank are'concealed by the connection to the end.

In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of a container embodying the improvement.

Fig. 2 is'a similar view showing the end" released and removed fromthe container.

In the application of Frank J. OBrien, Serial Number 379,824, filed of even date herewith, there is shown, described and claimed a container comprising a body portion to. which the ends are secured by :double seaming. This container is provided with an inserted collar which is attached to the body beneath the score lines forming the tearing strip in the body wall at the upper end of the container. This collar is inset from the body wall above the lower score line and the end is provided with an integral collar which has an outer slip engagement with the collar attached to the body wall for reclosure purposes.

The present invention is directed to an improvement in the structure shown in said application and resides in the construction of the collar which is fixed to the end of-the container. In accordance with the present invention the collar .isseparate from the end and is formed from a metal blank by folding the blank longitudinally and joining the ends of the blank. The collar so formed is attached to the end by the double seam which joins the end to the bodywall. Thus it is that the-collar becomes a fixed part of the released end and cooperates with the end in forming a cover for reclosure purposes. 7

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the container includes a bodyportion 1 which is preferably ofuniform diameter throughout. To this body is attached ends by double seaming. The upper end indicated at 2 is secured to the, body wall by a double seam. 3. The body'wall is scored along the lines 4. and 5. The score line 5 is just beneath the double seam. This formsa tearing strip 6 which may be torn away for releasing the end from the body. This is the'easy opening feature of the container. 7

When the tearing strip is removed the raw edge adjacent the double seam is so close beneath the double seam as to be concealed and the double seam protects the hand in the removing or placing of the cover. The body is of uniform diameter throughout and may be made on any standard body maker. The double seam joining the ends to the body is also of the usual form and may be made on any standard double seaming mechanism.

Located within the body is an inserted collar 7. This inserted collar 7 is folded back upon itself as indicated at 8 thus forming a reinforced section which is sized so that the collar has tobeforced into the body and the frictional grip between the portion 8 of the collar and the inner face of the body wall will hold the collar in a set fixed position relative to the body wall. The collar extends above the lower score line 4 andsubstantially into contact with the end 2. The upper end of the collar is rolledto form a bead 9. The upper portion 10 of the collar is inset away from thebody wall from the lower score line to the upper end thereof.

. Attached to the end 2 is a depending col- I lar 711. This collar is made from a blank by folding the blank longitudinally and then attaching the ends. The collar is placed in the container body between the wall of the container body and the inserted collar 7. The end 2 is then placed in the collar and is double seamed to the body. Thus it is that the collar is gripped between the vertical wall 12 of the depressed portion of the end 2 and the wall of the body of the container directly in rear of the double seam 3. This depressed portion in the end is of the usual construction and when the double seam is formed a chuck is placed in the recess in the end directly in rear of the wall 12, and the double seaming rolls, rolling the flanges into the double seam, move inwardly and thus press the double seam toward the chuck and this is what brings about a firm gripping of the collar between the end and the portion of the wall of the container leading to the double seam. When the tearing strip is removed the portion of the wall of the container in the immediate region of the double seam remains as a part of the released end and the gripping of this inserted collar to the end is not disturbed. The raw edges of the metal forming the collar are at the upper end thereof and concealed by the end when it is joined to the body by the double seam. The lower edge of this depending collar 11 is smooth. The collar 11 fits in the space between the inset portion of the collar 10 fixed to the body of the container and the wall of the container. When the tearing strip is removed the end 2 is released and may be lifted from the container. It may also be replaced on the container and this depending collar 11 forms an outside slip connection with the collar 10 attached to the body of the container.

It will be noted that the capacity of the container is not in any way changed when the tearing strip is removed and that I have provided an easy opening container which can be made on a standard body maker and a standard double seamer and wherein the end is practically of standard shape and dimensions.

It is obvious thatvminor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An easy opening container comprising a body of uniform diameter throughout and having ends double seamed thereto, said body having score lines adjacent the double seam at the upper end thereof forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, said body having an inserted collar attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly substantially into contact with the upper end of the container, said collar above the lower score line being inset from the wall of the body and a separate collar clamped between the upper end and the double seam and depending from said end and disposed between the collar and the body wall making contact with the tearing strip and also forming an outside slip engagement with the collar when the tearing strip is removed.

2. An easy opening container comprising a body of uniform diameter throughout and having ends double seamed thereto, said body having score lines adjacent the double seam at the upper end thereof forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, said body having an inserted collar attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly substantially into contact with the upper end of the container, said inserted collar having the upper end thereof rolled into a curl and the upper portion thereof inset from the wall of the body of the container and a separate collar, formed by folding a metal strip longitudinally, clamped between the upper end and the double seam, with the fold in the collar at the lower edge thereof, said separate collar being disposed between the inserted portion of the collar attached to the body and the wall of the body making contact with the tearing strip and also adapted to have an outside slip engagement with the collar attached to the body when the tearing strip is removed.

An easy opening container comprising a body of uniform diameter throughout and having ends double seamed thereto, said body having score lines adjacent the double seam at the upper end thereof forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, said body having an inserted collar attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly substantially into contact with the upper end of the container, a separate collar clamped between the upper end and the double seam and depending from said end, said collar having an outside slip engagement with the collar attached to the body of the container for reclosure, said collar being formed by folding a metal blank longitudinally and joining the ends and attached to the end of said container so that the raw edges of the metal are concealed bv the end.
