EASY OPENING CONTAINER 'k Filed July 2o, 1929 Clttozmqs Patented June 23, 1931 UNITED STATES(4v PATENT oFr-ICE FRANK J. OBREN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., .ASSIGNOR T CONTINENTL CAN COMPANY,
INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 0F NEW YORK i EASY OPENING CONTAINER Application led Jfuly 20, 1929. Serial No. ..".'i'9,824.
The invention relates to new and useful` improvements in easy openin containers and more particularly to a ermetically closed container wherein the ends are secured 5 to the body portion by double seaming.
An object of the-invention is to provide an easy opening container of the above type wherein the body portion is provided with score lines adjacentone end thereof for separating the end from the body with an inserted collar which maintains the fullcapacity of the container when it is open and with a member for an outside slip reclosure, the lower edge of which is smooth and unbroken.
A further object of the invention is to provide an easy opening container ofthe above type wherein the member carried by the detached end and used for an outside' slip in reclosing is formed integral with the end.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the inventionz- Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a con tainer embodying the improvements.
Fig. 2 isa sectional view through the container showing the end as released Jfrom body and removed therefrom.
The' invention broadly is directed to an easy opening container made of metal wherein the body portion adjacent one end e thereof is scored so as to provide a tearing strip which may be removed for separating the end from the body. Located within the body and xed thereto is an inserted collar.
This inserted collar is attached to the body beneath the lower score line and extends'upwardly into substantial contact with the 40 inner face of the end. The portion of the collar from the lower score line to the upper end thereof isinset. The end is provided with a member which is adapted to 'slip down over the upper portion ofthe collar which is attached to the body of the conthe tainer. Said outsideslip member is provided with a rounded smooth unbroken edge.
As shown in the present embodiment of the invention this member fixed to the end is formed integral therewith. This is accomplished by a drawing process. When the tearing strip is removed the end is released rom the body and may be removed.
When it is removed the capacity of the container is not in any way changed. This integral member xed to the end makes an outerslip engagement with the collar on the body and this produces a very eicient reclosing cover vfor the container after it is opened.
Referring more indetail to the drawings, the improved container includes a body portion 1 made in the usual manner from a blank, the edges of which are joined in a side seam. Attached to the body are closing ends which are secured thereto preferably by double seaming. The upper end is indicated in the drawings at 2 and the double seam for joining the upper end to the body is indicated at 3. So far as the closing of the container is concerned, the features shown are of the usual construction. The container body is of uniform diameter throughout and can be made on any standard body maker. The ends are secured to the body by the ordinary double seam which can be made on any standard double seaming mechanism. The body wall is provided with a lower score line 4 and an upper score line 5. Between these score lines is the tearing strip. This tearing strip may be made in any suitable way and one or more score lines may be used or any other way provided for weakening the body wall so that a strip may be torn out. The strip is indicated at 6. When this strip is torn out the end is released from lthe body. This is the means for the easy opening of the container.
Located Within the container is an in-a serted collar 7 This collar is provided with a folded back portion 8. The folded back portion 8 of the collar forms a very rigid section, and this `section of the collar is made so that it fits within the body wall so as to frictionally grip the same. The collar is made from a band'and the ends joined in any suitable way so asto make it a rigid member ll.
collar. The collar is sized so that when it is crowded into the-body the frictional grip between the collar and the body wall will hold the collar in fixed relation to the body wall. The portion 9 of the collar above the lower score line 4 is inset from the body wall as clearly shown in the drawings, and the upper edge portion of the collar is rolled into a bead l0. The end 2 for closing the container is provided with a depending This member 11 as shown is formed by drawing the metal. The metal is turned or drawn iirst in one direction and then in the other so as to form this dependo ing member. This produces an outside slip .attached to the body of the container.
member for reclosing wherein the lower edge is rounded and smooth and unbrokenand there is no danger of cutting the hand by engagement therewith. The portion 9 of the inserted collar attached to the body wall is inset the thickness of the metal and this provides a space between theportion 9 and the body wall which receives the depending member 11, when the containerl is made and before it is opened.
When the tearing strip 6 is removed the container is practically left in closed condition, that is, the end with its depending member 11 formed integral therewith is down over the inserted collar 10 attached to the body wall. However, the end 2 can be readily slipped off from the container. It can also be again slipped onto the container for reclosure purposes.
While I have shown the member 11 as shaped so that the walls thereof are s'ubstantially in contact, it will be understood, ofcourse, that it may be otherwise shaped. Ifhe only essential feature is that the inner wall of the member shall have a slip frietional fit with the outer wall ofthe cllar ontact with the portion of the body havingtlie score lines is also helpful in that it forms a support for the tearing strip while it is being torn away. While I have shown this thereon for reclosure it also takes the same position on the body.
It is obvious that minorV changes in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and Letters Patent, is
1. An easy opening container, comprising a body having ends seamed thereto, said body having spaced scorelines forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, a collar located within the body and attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly, the upper portion of the collar being inset from the wall of the body, and a depending member .fixed to theI upper end and disposed between the collar and the wall of the body making Contact with the portion of the body having the score lines and making a removable outside slip contact with said collar when said tearingstrip is removed.
2. An easy opening container, comprising a body having ends seamed thereto, said body having spaced score lines adjacent the seam joining the upper end to the body and forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, a collar located within the body and attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly and terminating substantially at the lower edge of the double seam, the upper portion of the collar being inset from the wall of the body, and a depending member fixed to the upper end and disposed between the collar and the wall of the body making contact with the portion of the body having the score lines and making a removable outside slip contact with said collar when said tearing strip is removed.-
3. An easy opening container, comprising a body having ends seamed thereto, said body having s aced score lines adjacent the seam joining t e upper end to the body and forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, a collar located within the body and attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly and terminating substantially at the lower edge of the double seam, the upper portion of the collar being inset from the wall of the body, said end having an integral ldepending member disposed between the collar and the wall of the body making contact with the portion of the body having the score lines and making a removable outside slip contact with said collar when said tearingstrip is removed.
4. An easy opening container, comprising a body having ends seamed thereto, said body having spaced score lines adjacent the seam joining the upper end to the body and forming a tearing strip for releasing the end from said body, a collar located Within the desire to secure by body and attached thereto below the score lines and extending upwardly and terminating substantially at the lower edge of the l so as to provide a vertical wall forming a re-y double seam, the upper portion of the collar being inset from the wall of the body, said end havin a depression forming a vertical wall therein adapted to contact with the portion of the can body having the score lines,
said vertical wall being vbent back on itself movable outside slip contact with the collar when the tearing strip is removed.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature FRANK J. OBRIEN.
