In this patent, the band is located below a double the container and the container end. \Vhen the container end with a depression, thus forming a riction top reclosure after is opened, considerable difliculty has been experienced in the double seaming of the container end to the container body so as to make a tight seam without breaking the body at the score line.
An object of the invention is to provide a container having an external band which is located directly beneath the flange on the container body whereby the double seam extends down over and laps the upper edge portion of the band.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the container end is provided with a central depressed portion having a vertical friction wall adapted to frictionally engage the inner wall of the container body, both above and below the fold lines in the body wall.

The body wall 0 the container-is folded prior to the joining of the edges of the container so as to form a band which is located on the exterior of the wall of the contamer. This band is formed lines in the body wall are adjacent each other and are located between the upper and lower ends of the band. By this construction, the band may be disposed so as to be directly beneath the flange on the container body, and when the container body and container end are rolled into a double seam, it will overlap the band so that said double seam may be made very tight without any liability of rupturing the score lines on the band. The container end is'provided with a central depressed portion forming a. vertical friction wall which is adapted to make contact with the inner wall of the container, both above and below the fold lines forming the external band. When the band is ruptured and the end released, it may be reclosure.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the container consists of a body portion 1, the edges of which are interfolded to form a lock seam 2 which extends from the bottom of the container to a point adjacent the external band formed in the body wall. The ends of the container are joined to the container body in the usual way. In the drawings, the upper end 3 is shown as secured to the container body by a double seam 4. The metal formin the bod of the container prior to the s aping o the same into cylindrical form, is the line 5 so as-to provide a downwardly extending portion 6, and is again folded at 7, at the lower end of said downwardly extending portion so as to form the outer wall -8 of the band. The metal is again folded so that the fold folded along I the fold line 5 which forms tion 12 of the body wall is in alinement with the portion 14 forming the main body wall of the container. The band extends from a oint below the fold lines 5 and 11 to a point well above these fold lines, and the upper edge of the band is located directly beneath the flange 13. The container end 3 is provided with a central depressed pdrtion 15. This forms a vertical friction wall 16. The outer edge 17 of the container end is adapted to be rolled with the flange 13 into a. double seam, which is indicatedat l in Figures 3 and i. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, this double seam overlaps the upper end of the band. In the forming of the double seam, a chuck may be placed in the depressed ortion of the container end, and between tlie chuck and the parts of the double seam which are rolled against the hand, there is a solid metal support which relieves all strain from the outer wall 8 of the hand during the rolling of these parts into a double seam. This enables the double seam also to he made very tight, thus providing a very tight seal. The usual sealing material indicated at if) provided {or insuring that the double seam will be scaled so that the container may be put under vacuum. if theirctl. The outer wall 8 of the band is scored along the line .20, well down toward the lower portion of the band, and also along the line 21, which is directly beneath the extreme. lower edge of the double seam and substantially in line with the fold lines 5 and 11 in the wall of the container body. These score lines form a tearing strip provided with the usual extended tongue 22. A key placed on-this tongue may be used for tearing the metal to release the container end from. the container body. When the parts are released by the removing of the tearing strip, the raw edge of the metal produced by the lower score line, is well below the upper edge of the container. The raw edge of material at the upper score line is well underneath the metal parts forming the double seam, so
that the hand is protected from contact with this raw edge of metal. The depressed portion of the container end makes frictional contact with the container body for a distance below the fold line 5, when the container end is first attached to the container body. After the band has been severed, and when the container end is used for reclosure purposes, this vertical wall of the depressed portion of the container end will make frictional contact with the container body, thus holding the container end on the body as a closure for the container body. The fold 11 in the body wall will provide a shoulder which engages the fold 5 at the upper edge of the container and thus limit the extent to which the container end telescopes within the container body. 1
From the above it will be apparent that a container body has been provided wherein the container may be of uniform diameter throughout. The reinforcing band which is provided with a tearing strip, is external of the container and extends to a point well up under the double seam so as to insure the formation of a very tight double seam without injuring the scored metal parts. When the band has been severed, then the container end may be readily removed and replaced, and serves as a friction closure for the container. The ends of the band may be lapped in any desired way.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departingl from the spirit of the invention as set fort in the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is-
A metal container comprising abody portion flanged at its ends and having container ends secured thereto by double seaming, the wall of said container being folded outwardly, thence downwardly and upwardly to form an external hand lying against the outer wall of the container, said upwardly folded portion being bent inwardly, thence downwardly to a point adjacent the first-named fold in the body wall, thence upwardly and outwardly into the double seam, said end adj acent the band having a depressed portion adapted to frictionally engage the inner wall of the container body above and below the fold lines in said body wall, said band having a score line formed in the outer wall thereof at the extreme lower edge of the double seam, and a score" line formed therein adja cent the lower portion of the band, thus providing a tearing strip for severing the wall to release the container end from the container body.
