SAFETY LOCK FOR GAS COCKS Application filedApril 23, 1930. Serial No. 446,649.
This invention relates to looks or protectors for valves or cocks of gas stoves, and has for one of its objects to provide a device of this kind which cannot be accidentally manipulated, or exposed to undue operation by children or others; thus assuring a maximum of safety.
Another object is to provide for a range or cooking stove a safety lock that may be 0 operated without difiiculty and disengaged from its normal locking position when it is necessary to use said stove, and which may be placed back into locking relation with the cocks of the stove when thelatter is not in use.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and easily and quickly assembled by reason of its minimum number of parts.
Another object is to provide a lock of this character which is so constructed as to include lower attaching members of a kind which may be adjusted to conform with the spacing of the inlet pipes on the manifold of a stove; and, also, a lock having cock securing elements in the nature of shields, which shields, preferablv corresponding with the number of handles carried by the manifold, may be easily and quickly regulated to allow of individual operation of the handles, or to lock the whole of the latter or any part there- Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out, or will become apparent, as the specification proceeds.
With the above indicated objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel constructions and combinations and arrangement of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which latter show embodiments of the invention as at present preferred.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a gas stove or range with which the novel attachment is incorporated Fig. 2 is a front elevational view, in which some of the structure is slightly modified;
' from the ends of the bar 9, the latter is slid- Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective of the structure shown in Fig. 1; and
' Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective of another modification. V 7
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 2 indicates a stove top to which are attached brackets 3 and 3 for supporting a manifold 4 into which are screwed cocks 5, the handles 6 of which are-horizontally swingable for closing or opening said cocks. Inlet pipes 10, on which said cocks are positioned, pass from the manifold to mixers or regulators 7, which connect with outlets 8.
In carrying out the present invention, as the same is here embodied, there is provided a bar, 9, made preferably of metal, or of any material deemed suitable for such a device. This bar passes longitudinally of the front of the gas range, above the aforesaid inlet pipes 10, said bar being slidably mounted below straps 3a and 3b. The bar 9 (as shown in Fig. a) has attached to its bottom a plurality of armsfll which pass downwardly and terv minate in arcuate portions-12. These portions slidably engage the manifold 4, while on the upper face of bar 9 are a plurality of portions 13 which extend upwardly and thence 'curve downwardly to form shields 14 for slidably engaging the handles 6. The arms 11 and portions 13 are preferably integral, and are attached to the bar 9 by fastening elements, as shown, but a limited number of arms 11 is sufficient, in practice.
WVhile the bar 9 is slidable in slots 18 provided in the brackets 3, 3', a pair of plates 3a, 3?), having handles 21, 22 thereon, are pivoted at 23 and 24; and as pins 19, 19 project able, on operation of either of said handles, to also slide the shields 14 into or out of engage- 'ment with the handles 6, the shields 14 being simultaneously slidable on the manifold for guiding purposes.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a spring 15 which carries a hook 16. In this case the bar 9 may be placed on the brackets 3, 3, and the hooks 16, two or more being used, placed on pipes 10. The plates 3a, 3b may'then becurved E60 of devices 13.
upwardly to provide a space for the ends of i lease of a handle 21 or 22.
In Fig. 5 is illustrated a modified form of construction, in which two bars 9 and 9 are employed, there being an intermediate space 9a between the bars for retaining a plurality These devices are individually slidable in the said space for adjustment to suit the particular distance between handles 16, after which, on tightening screws 17, the said devices are retained in a fixed position. The compound bar 9', 9 is movable on the brackets in the same manner as the bar 9.
The hereinbefore described construction admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention; therefore, it is the wish notto be limited to the precise arrangements shown and described, which are as aforesaid, by way of illustration merely. In other words the scope of protection contemplated is to be taken solely from the appended claims, interpreted as broadly as is consistent with the prior art.
What is claimed as new is: 1 The combination with a gas stove havmg a pair of brackets, and a manifold, of a locking device including a bar, said bar slidably mounted on said bracket, shields rigid with said bar and sli'dably engageable with the handles of the gas cocks of the stove for holding said cocks in a closed position, and 1 another shield also rigid with said bar and slidable on said manifold for guiding the locking device during the sliding operation.
2. The combination with a gas stove having a pair of brackets, a manifold, interposed gas cocks mcluding handles, of a looking device comprising slidable shields for the handles, a bar rigidly carrying said shields and slidable on said brackets, and means including another shield also rigid with said bar and slidable on said manifold for guiding the locking device during the sliding operation.
3.- The combination with a gas stove having a pair of brackets, a manifold, interposed gas cocks including handles, of a locking device comprising slidable shields for the handles, a bar rigidly carrying said shields and slidable on said brackets, a manipulating lever pivoted on one of said brackets and movably connected with said bar for sliding the latter, and means including another shield also rigid with said'bar and slidably on the manifold for guiding the locking device during the sliding operation.
4. An attachment for a gas stove including a slidable bar, locking shields rigid therewith for slidably engaging the gas cocks of a stove, guide shield also rigid with said bar forslidably engaging the manifold of a gas stove, coupling hooks engageable with the gas pipes of the stove adjacent the gas cocks, {and spring means disposed between said hooks and said bar for holding said first shields in the engaged position, said bar being 'sli'dable against the action of said springs for moving said first shields to release the gas cocks.
Intestimony whereof I hereby afiix my
