2 Claims.
This invention relates to a locking device of the character employing padlocks or similar locking mediums and has for the primary object the provision of a device which may be employed at any place or on any device where it is desired to lock the device with the privilege of one or more persons locking and unlocking the device and with each person having a separate padlock and keys therefor.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a locking device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing in dotted lines the device in an unlocked position with one padlock still applied thereto.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an edge elevation illustrating the locking device.
Figure 6 is a plan view illustrating a latch bolt.
Figure 7 is an end elevation illustrating the cover of the casing of the locking device.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a casing of substantially rectangular shape having a cover'plate 2 removably secured thereto by bolts or like fasteners 3 which are also employed for securing the casing in place on an object. A keeper 4 is employed in 40 connection with this device to receive a slidable latch bolt 5. The latch bolt is slidably mounted in the casing and extends through opposite sides thereof, one end of which engages the keeper 4 and the other end shaped to provide a finger piece 6. The latch bolt 5 is placed under tension by a spring member 7 carried by the cover. Spaced notches 8 are provided in the latch bolt between which bears the free portion of the spring member '7.
A locking plate 8 is slidably mounted in the casing and is arranged at right angles to the latch-bolt and carries a pin 9 which operates in a substantially U-shaped slot 10 formed in the latch bolt. The slot 10 provides parallel passages 11 and a connecting passage 12 and when the locking plate is positioned to place the pin 9 in the passage 12 the latch bolt will be held against sliding movement and within the cover 4 and when the pin is positioned in either of the passages 11 the latch bolt may be slid in opposite directions for engaging and disengaging the same with the keeper. The ends of the locking plate extend through opposite sides of the casing 1 and have formed integrally therewith loop-shaped elements 13 which operate in slots 14 formed in the cover. Pairs of hookshaped elements 15 are formed integrally with the cover and are oppositely disposed and face each other and the hook-shaped elements of each pair are relatively spaced to receive therebetween the loop-shaped elements 13. Padlocks 16 when applied to the loop-shaped elements will also engage the hook-shaped elements and pre-- vent the locking plate 8 from being slid in either direction and also positioning the pin in the branch 12 of the latch bolt thereby locking the latter against sliding movement. The removal of either of the padlocks will permit the locking plate to be slid for positioning the pin in one of the branches 11 so that the latch bolt may be engaged and disengaged from the keeper 4. The padlocks employed upon the device are operated by different keys. This permits one person to have keys to one lock and another person to have keys to the other lock whereby either of said persons may operate the device.
To provide a master lock for the device, the latch bolt 5 has formed integrally therewith a loop-shaped element 17 operating between a pair of hook-shaped elements 18 formed integrally with the cover of the casing so that when a padlock is applied to the loop-shaped element 1'7 the latch bolt will be prevented from having sliding movement due to the fact that the loopshaped element 1'? can only be positioned between the hook-shaped elements 18 when the pin occupies a position in the passage 12 of the slot 10. A third person in possession of the keys to the padlock applied to the loop-shaped element 17 will first have to remove the last-named padlock before either of the other persons in possession of the keys to the other padlock may operate the latch bolt to free the locking bolt.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed. 1 10 Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A locking device comprising a casing, a slidable latch bolt in said casing to engage and disengage with the keeper, a locking plate slidable in the casing and having three positions and when in one of said positions adapted to secure the latch bolt in engagement with the keeper and when in either of its other said positions adapted to free the latch bolt, separable locking means for the locking plate whereby said locking plate may be freed to free the latch bolt on the removal of either of said locking means, and a master locking means for the latch bolt.
2. A locking device comprising a casing, a slidable latch bolt in said casing to engage and disengage With a keeper and having a substantially U-shaped slot providing connected parallel and angularly related passages, a locking plate slidable in the casing and having three positions, a pin carried by the locking plate and operating in the slot, and when positioned in either of the parallel branches of the slot adapted to permit the latch bolt to slide and when in the angularly related passage of the slot adapted to secure the latch bolt against sliding movement and in engagement with the keeper, pairs of hook-shaped elements carried by the casing and the hookshapecl elements of each pair relatively spaced, loop-shaped elements carried by the locking plate and slidable with the locking plate and relative to the hook-shaped elements to receive padlocks for securing the locking plate against sliding movement by the padlocks engaging the hookshaped elements.
