SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR GAS-STOVES' AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 25, 1914. Serial No; 874,058.
This invention relates to safety appliances for gas stoves and the like and has for its object more particularly the provision of means for preventing the accidental opening of the gas cocks of such stoves. It is well known that children too young to understand any better will often open the cocks of a gas stove in a mischievous way and consequently run the danger ofasphyxiation if not discovered in time. To guard against such dangers as well as accidental opening. of the gas cocks by older people: I have devised a simple safety appliance adapted to be attached to a gas stove,

All of this is common in gas stoves and will be readily understood.

In. order to secure the bar in its locking position it is provlded 1n the present embodiment with a pivoted catch 15 pivotally mounted by stud 20 in bearings of bar 7 and having a slotted engagement with a pin '19 of said bar 7 to prevent fallingftoo far out of position. The forward end of said catch is beveled as at 17, and: has a notch 17 for engagement with a pin, such as 18, upon some stationary portion of the stove. It will be understood that when the bar 7 is moved to the left looking at Fig. 3, for instance,' from its dotted line position to its full line position as shown, that the catch 15 will ride by its beveled edge over pin 18 and automatically engage with the same so as to prevent the bar being'moved back. The pivotv 20 is fixed to the catch 15, and for convenience of handling the pivot 20 of said catch 15 is provided at its outer end with a knurled knob 21 so that when said knob is turned the catch will be raised. Also by means of the knob 21 the bar 7 may be moved back and forth to its looking or' unlocking posi tion. This insome cases is sufficient for operating the bar 7.
Fig. 3 shows: a modification of the device in which means are provided to automatieally move the bar 7 to its locking position -8 of said bar 7 will prevent the bar moving to its locking position'under stress of spring 22, but as soon as all of said gas cocks are closed" the bar 7 will then move to its locking position under the stress of the spring 22. It is also obvious that other positive means may be provided between the cock 6 and the bar 7 to prevent movement of the barto locking position when any oneof the cocks are open. When the bar 7 is moved to looking position, the catch 15 will of course then automatically engage with 'pin 18 and the gas cocks of the stove will be guarded against accidental opening. To open any one of the cocks the knob 21 is slightly turned first to release the catch and then moved toward the left, looking at Figs. 1 and 2,'to carry the projections 8 of bar 7 away from behind the handles 3 of the cooks. 7 It is understood that the present disclosure is merely one of the preferred embodiments of my invention and that various changes and variations may be made without'departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. I/Vhat I claim as new is tr 1. In a safety appliance for gas and the like, the combination with one or more cocks adapted to be opened and closed for controlling the admission of gas to said stove, of locking means tending at all times to'move into locking position for preventing the opening of said cocks when closed and constructed'and arranged to be held in unlocking position by the opened cock, and a catch arranged to hold said locking means positively against movement out of its looking position when" so moved.
2. In a safety appliance for gas stoves or 'the' like, the combination with a gas cook, of locking means movable into and out of a position in which'it locks said gas cook closed, means for positively preventing movement of said locking means out of locking position, and means acting automatically upon the closing of said'gas cook to move said locking means into locking position. 3. In a safety appliance for gas stoves or the like, the combination with a gas cook, of locking means movable into and out of a position in which it locks said gas cock closed, means acting automatically upon the closing of said gas cock to move said looking means into locking position, and means 7 automatically brought into operative position as said locking means is moved into locking position for positively preventing movement of said locking means out of locking position.
4. Ina safety appliance for gas stoves or the like,'the combination with a gas cock, of locking means movable into and out of a -position in which it locks said gas cook closed, a latch for holdingfsaid locking means positively in locking position, and

In a safety appliance :for gas stoves and the like the combination with a plurality of cocks having operating handles so as to be opened and closed for controlling the admission of gas to. said stove, of looking means operable into locking position for preventing the opening of said cocks when closed and into unlocking position for releasing said cocks, comprising a bar provided with'portions adapted to be shifted into the way of the handles of, said cocks,
