WINDOW GUARD.
Application led April 29, 1925, Serial No. 26,611. Renewed April 20, 1925.v
rlhe object ot this invention is to provide a guard tor window openings which shall be adjustable and removable, strong and reliable, and simple in construction and operation. The guard has side members, eX- tensible cross-bars, screw means for thrusting the sides ot the guard apart to seat it solidly in the window guides, and for permitting the guard to be readily collapsed for removal, and means for locking the members when seated in window openings ot different widths.
In the accompanying drawings forming part hereof:
Fig. l is an elevation of the window guard in a window, the sides of the window frame being indicated in section;
Fig. 2 is a View on a larger scale in transverse vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on a still larger scale Showing the clamping and locking means.
The guard comprises two vertical side members 2, 3 adapted to stand in the guides of a window beneath the raised sash a. Between these members there is a set ot extensible cross-bars, preferably three in number, though this might be varied.
The upper and lower cross-bars in the illustrated form are alike in construction, and are marked 4. The middle cross-bar has the screw means, and is marked 5.
Each of the cross-bars 4 consist of a stout tube 6 connected to the side piece 2, and plain rods 7 connected to the side piece 3 and slidable in and out in the tubes. The cross-bar 5 likewise comprises a tube 8 and a rod 9 connected to the respective side pieces, but the rod 9 for a considerable part of its length is formed with a screw-thread l0 and with a longitudinal groove 11.
A nut or female screw member l2 is placed on the screw l() to bear against the end of the tube 8 as an abutment. rlhis nut member is of substantial length and diameter, and is knurled, to form a goed hand grip so that the nut may e turned powerfully to force the two sides of the guard apart. In this way the side members 2, 3 are jammed against the sides of the window frame, holding the structure rigid, and calling 'for more eiliort than a small child can exert to release the guard by turning the nut in the reverse direction. A set-screw 13 is threaded through a boss 14C on the tube 8, near the nut. rThis screw enters the groove 1l of the screwthreaded rod and keeps the same from turning, and when set by a screw driver hard against the rod locks the parts even should the nut 12 become loosened in some manner.
While the preferred form of the invention has been described in detail, the invention is not necessarily limited to such Jform, since there may be changes in details of substitutions of equivalents within the scope of the claim.
l/Vhat is claimed as new is: v
A window guard comprising vertical side pieces, a plurality of extensible cross-bars between said side pieces, one ot" said crossbars consisting of a tube connected to one of the side pieces and a screw-threaded rod connected to the other side piece and entering said tube, a thrust nut on said rod to bear against the end of said tube, said screwthreaded rod .having a longitudinal groove, and a set-screw carried by the tube to lock the parts independently of said nut, said set-screw likewise cooperating with said groove to hold the parts against relative turning.
